Does anyone know how long after interviewing we can expect to hear from the CCLCM?

CCLCM will notify the first acceptees around mid-december. Remember, our program cannot rely on stats to "over accept" since there are literally only 32 spots. Therefore there will be likely a dozen-ish accepted on that date. Applicants who interview ahead of that first full adcom will be considered. There will be two further meetings later in the cycle

Well, it is more than 32 over the course of the year. Some will decline ahead of the traffic date (which is early for both programs) and then the spots will be offered to others. Think it is around 45ish who will be accepted before the first day of school.

I got an e-mail from Case regarding a recent status update for the UP, but my status page has not updated yet. Can I infer anything from getting this email? (interview, rejection, or hold)

Whoa guys get this, I have a real question!

For the scholarships, any clue how many people actually end up receiving scholarships out of those who are invited to apply?
 
so... how do I get off the CWRU "hold" status. I just sent an update yesterday. Does CWRU like updates? Can I harass admissions? Come'on CWRU, I know someone who got in with a lower MCAT than me... atleast interview me... of course, that man was god. But i can be god too. 😀

Whoa! I'm shocked! 😉

For UP I don't think anybody could tell you. This is more of a question for Christian in the office, anyways :shrug:. Some people may get partial scholarships, some may get more, too. The best thing u can do is fill out the forms if you are invited to do so sooner rather than later.

As CCLCMer has said in the past...you can send updates (which you have) for things like grades, new publications, patents, awards, things along these lines.

So, let me tell you guys a little about what is going on in First Year at CCLCM:

We are smack-dab in the middle of of our cardiopulmonary block (which as you can imagine is a very strong, solid clinical block here at the Clinic - the #1 heart hospital in the country since they started rankings oh, I don't know 17 or 18 years ago?). We are really starting to get into the groove here.

Tonight was our 2nd Dean's Dinner. Dean's Dinners are for the CP students and happen once every quarter during our first and second years (8 times total).

These are formal dinners at the Foundation House on the Clinic Campus (which is a lovely, well-maintained old mansion the Clinic owns). Speakers are successful physicians-investigators who come give a presentation about their research.

Both after their formal talk and after dinner we are given the opportunity to discuss in great detail their careers and ask for advice in forming our own work-life balance and medical and research careers. It's really a great way to get exposure to highly-successful research-focused doctors.

Anyway, tonight we happened to have Dean Davis, who also is the Dean of the whole CWRU medical school, be the invited guest. Dean Young, the Executive Dean of CCLCM (got it? 😛), was our faculty host.

Dean Davis gave an excellent speech about her research dealing with Cystic Fibrosis. It was quite good, and I think we all were very excited to have her there.

At the same time, it was also an intimate venue and exceptional opportunity to hear these two Deans talk about CCLCM and CWRU.

All I can say is that I made the right choice and am more excited than ever about being part of such an amazing medical school. I look forward to the day I am out "in the real world" and representing MY school.

Heck, we students are all excited to talk to you guys about our school, and why we encourage and welcome all questions! 🙂

What I took away from tonight, in short,is that Case is moving-and-shaking and I agree that it is possibly the most under-rated medical school in the US. Mark my words.

Not to bash other medical schools, but don't believe their hype: I firmly believe any CWRU graduate will hold their own out there in residency programs with "the best of the best".

And to the haters out there:

Don't mistake our affable postings on this website as somehow meaning we are not academically up-to-snuff.

To the contrary: I meet people (patients, residents, and faculty even) who are constantly surprised when they find out what sort of academic pedigree my classmates have - and that's in both programs.

Just because we aren't high-strung and uber-full-of-ourselves doesn't mean we aren't damn good students. I'm proud of my school and it is the THE med school I wanted to attend.

To you current candidates: We place people into top programs. Period. This school will not hold you back. Period. End of Story.

And finally on a personal note to the The Haters: When I run circles around you in residency I hope that fancy diploma is super-absorbent to soak up your tears. :meanie:

aaaaaaand these are all the reasons that come decision time, I have a feeling Case is the school I'll choose to attend.

Speaking as an applicant to the University track (well, acceptee now!), there was something about Case that I just can't put into words. I honestly get chills just thinking about it (good chills!). The students had such an amazing energy and a true love of the curriculum and course material. There was none of that "well I guess this is just what I'm gonna have to push through to be a doctor" vibe. Everyone really loved the process of learning.

Thanks for that post, vc7777! Even though I didn't apply to CCLCM I think a lot of what you said applies to the whole program. Between you, Myuu, and CCLMer I've gotten such a good impression of Case! Hopefully I'll meet you all in person someday....or at least Myuu since she's on the University track! Second look weekend perhaps? 😀

I'm not sure about the entire gamut of UP research, but I can tell you that clinical research is definitely possible for them. There have been several UP students working with the group where I'm doing the thesis work for my clinical research MS.

I wrote a letter of intent, but that was in the spring after they created the waitlist (which I was on). My letter was on fire, and I would like to think it helped. Other than that, I'm not sure how they see it. But I don't think it would hurt - as long as it's compelling. Just not yet. Give them time, do it around when they start considering your app again, for max effect.

No, I don't think it's particularly large. Keep in mind that the 199 number includes all three Case programs (UP, CCLCM, and MSTP). CCLCM has 32 students of the 199, and our classes are completely separate from the other two programs during the first two years. Completely separate as in, not even on the same campus. (We take ours at CCF.) So now you're talking about 167 students who do their preclinical coursework at the Case campus. Of those, another 8-10 or so students per year are MSTP. So that leaves 150-something UP students per year, which is a pretty average class size for a medical school.

I can't speak to the particulars of the quality or focus of UP classes, so I'll leave that question for one of them to answer.

Why yes, I can answer this.
I don't feel the class is too big at all. Although I don't really know all my classmates well yet, they are all wonderful people. The camaraderie is amazing. That's a huge part of what drew me to Case, especially after my interview.
As for academics, first of all, they have 4 deans for the UP alone. They separate us into societies (not for classes, but for some events) and we actually get to KNOW our dean, who will be writing our letters of rec. They are accessible and very nice, and definitely invest a lot into us.

Speaking of investing a lot into us, I feel like Case really cherishes their students. This sounds awkwardly touchy feely, but it's true. They invest a lot of effort into making things genuinely fabulous in the curriculum and presentations in lecture. The small PBL groups makes the class size tiny in terms of intimate groups. And the lecturers are accessible for questions. I find it works well and I don't feel it's large at all.

For example, for gross anatomy, we have groups of ONLY 4 STUDENTS per cadaver. That's it, no one else uses the body. We made the first cut and we stay with him through the entire program. There are prosections for examples of structures, but that's a very small student-to-resource ratio . This is true for many things.

1. It's the focus of the first block of school. Some people didn't appreciate the extent of the focus on this field, but a lot of us LOVED it. I personally found that they

In fact, I am on the student counsel as a representative for the committee on medical education (SCME). As is dntpanic. I am representing Block 1 in terms of helping refine its structure and content to be even better. I want it to be as effective as possible for future classes, meaning yours 😉 So issues I and other students had with some minor aspects of its layout will be ironed out for you!

Additionally, several of my classmatse are taking advantage of the opportunity to complete a Master's degree virtually FREE in many fields - Public Health being one. It adds another year to the process, but it's tuitionless. There are also many classes you can simply take (free too) alongside regular med school curriculum. I'm in a global health class.

One thing to mention - there are a bizillion opportunities to get involved in public health initiatives starting immediately. There are clubs, interest groups, and countless other ways. If I had more time, that's where I'd be most active.

As a side note, I plan on doing my research thesis in Public Health, which is a true option 😀

Clinical opportunities abound. There are standard patient interactions weekly beginning in block 2. There are shadowing-style sessions throughout the entire curriculum. That's just the mandatory stuff. There are also countless opportunities to get involved in MANY ways clinically. The student-run free health clinic will be operational around next summer/fall, and that will be AWESOME! Excitedddd

This is also valuable lab/research experience. Illuminate your involvement, the experience you gained, and how you felt about it and how that has impacted your life in one way or another. Their focus on research is not limited to published papers, etc. Not all of my classmates were involved in research much at all, even.

Today I drove around a graveyard for like an hour - it's one of the most beautiful park-like places I've ever been. The autumn trees are breathtaking. I love biking in the parks. It's superpretty!

I applied fairly late. My AMCAS app was complete in September, but my letters of rec and essays weren't ready until like November.

Anecdote: a fan was down in the med building today. The hallways were a wind tunnel, and papers went everywhere. I found it rather hauntingly awesome haha and no worries, it didn't affect the exam rooms.

Case is definitely one of my top choices if not my very top choice, but......Cleveland is a problem. I live with my boyfriend of 3 years and he would love to follow me to medical school, but Cleveland isn't exactly a huge bustling city and he's a little concerned about the career options out there. So I'm wondering (1) how's the job market in Cleveland right now? Boyfriend is specifically interested in medical device companies...he's a mechanical engineer. Also, (2) Does Case have any career resources for the spouses/sig others of its students?

I love love love Case so much but I also love love love Boyfriend so much and I don't want to have to decide between the two come May!

Really bad if:
you have to walk across one of the largest campuses in the country daily.
you live in a drafty 100 year old house (seal those windows!)
you avoid long underwear like the plague


Not so bad if:
you drive everywhere.
your apartment has good heat
you know how to dress for the cold

Basically there's a week every January where the temp doesn't get above 0. But luckily it's too cold to snow or for there to be wind then so it's not as bad as it could be. What really sucks is when it gets windy. March sucks too....when it's still snowing like a mofo and you just want spring.

MN winters are not a deal breaker, IMO 🙂

Haha...fun fact: "rep tie" is a pretty archaic term outside of the UK.

And...we only have one ivy league applicant on Monday.

Ah, it is not quite 2 weeks since I was legally allowed to imbibe funpoison and I have embraced my newfound identity as yet another of the guys who wants to go to the bar after getting all of our homework done. 🙂 ... it's an expensive habit! I had a sampler tray today that cost kinda... twice as much as I thought it would. good times tho!


BTW... CCLCM still calls to me in my dreams, still ahead of everywhere I've interviewed (maybe tied with one other.. but would definitely win unless unexpected things happen at the other)

actually, if i'm not mistaken, seeing the Jean Luc Picard video in last year's thread is what prompted me to share that one.

i may or may not have made a trip to Cleveland back in the day when the Women of StarTrek Convention came through.
