And from a totally different twist on the debt you'll incur, consider this somewhat nauseating scenario. The US is running up debt at an unsustainable rate and our leaders along with most of the citizens obviously don't have the will to do anything about it. Since we won't stop spending, there appears to be only one narrative that will reduce the level of debt to managable levels before countries just stop lending to us altogether and that is to inflate the currency.....significantly. Inflating the currency 50% would bring the debt back to reasonable levels vs GDP. Of course those who are holding our debt now, foreign governments and individuals who buy government securities wouldn't like that very much, the dollar would surely be removed as a reserve currency for global transactions(there are calls for that now), and cars, food, housing, everything would all cost double, plus interest rates would go through the roof. Those who are on fixed income or who are close to retirement would be totally screwed, but that's ok, the rents can move in with you!😉 BUT the good news is that if you just went into debt up to your eyeballs for med school, your future inflated compensation would easily retire debt incured today. It would be like going to school with a 50% discount. The "real" inflation rate was reported as 10% today, gee, only 40% more to go.

I certainly don't advocate this course of action for our country as the suffering would be immense, but the fact of the matter is that our politicians are killing us with debt and younger people with significant debt and a desired skill set would probably do just fine paying back the higher value dollars they borrowed with inflated dollars as long as the loan has a fixed interest rate. Let's all hope and pray that the pols come up with a better plan than this one.🙁 Oh I know.....tax the rich.....like...the...doctors!:meanie:
 
Are exams at the end of each block or are there exams throughout the block like before a break or something? Just curious, because from the academic calendar for the class of 2015 winter break is during block 3 so I was wondering if there is an exam or something before the break?

for the purposes of choosing between schools, I was wondering if anybody knew if those need-based grants are still given to those with scholarship awards?
 
Just thought I'd swing by to say I am 100% OFFICIALLY going to Case!!! Got an e-mail from Dr. Mehta today about a scholarship, and the extra $$ was all I needed to go from 95% sure to 100% sure about moving to Cleveland!

I AM SO EXCITED

Although, I'm already 100% so I guess they don't have any reason to woo me with the greens. 👍

Congrats Rhesus!! No money for me...but I did make it official yesterday...withdrew other acceptances and am heading to Cleveland in July!!!!

This seems to be mostly in jest, but you do realize there is about a 0% chance that we try to inflate the country out of debt right? Also, as doctors our responsibilities come to more than probably owing more in taxes than the current rates, we will also be a profession with a huge impact on the greatest driver of runaway costs (and, ergo, govt. debt): medical care. In a lot of ways the future, and whether or not we steal it from our children, will be in our hands.

Also in other news: $$$ 🙂🙂🙂🙂, I think I will be spotted in Cleveland sometime this summer.

I was unable to make it to CCLCM second look but I may try to schedule an unofficial visit sometime in the next week or two. Anyone else planning to do the same?

Acoustic is correct. If you work 10 years in a non-profit, you'll get your remaining debt forgiven at the end of that time. People choose to do IBR because it's the lowest payments initially so the greatest debt is forgiven at the end of 10 years. And $700,000 isn't that ridiculous of an amount. If you borrowed $250,000 for med school (the full COA $60K+ each year), the total amount you'd pay back with IBR is about 3x the original principal, or $750K.

Pretty much all academic practices are considered non-profits (basically if your hospital sees uninsured patients, it is considered a non-profit). This method is most useful if you have a large amount of debt.

This isnt necessarily true though. Once you are an attending you may no longer qualify for the IBR program because your debt to income ratio may not be high enough. You have to reapply for it every single year. So theoretically you could make it to year 8 and then not qualify for year 9 and not get loan forgiveness after year 10 because you no longer qualify for IBR.

Us first and second years worked hard all year to help make some of the material presented tonight! For us first years, Eric Coble - our Playwright-In-Residence produced a few vignettes based on our creative writings. Two of these were incorporated into Voices of Healing. Hats off the CCLCM staff who helped make this possible - not to mention my classmates who helped provide the material! 👍

That's incorrect. http://www.ibrinfo.org/faq.vp.html#increase Once you no longer qualify, your payments will be capped at the original 10 year repayment plan price. However, because you spent so much time in IBR, you will still have a large amount of principal+interest remaining even after 3-5 years of standard payments. As long as you are in IBR or standard repayment, you qualify for PSLF.
 
i was wondering if anybody knew if students ever ask for more for a merit scholarship? I know that sounds rude and selfish since most acceptees don't get any at all, but I was wondering if the school has ever upped a student's merit scholarship if another comparable school was offering them a full ride.

I have a confession. I checked into this thread sparsely over the last few months, but after being placed on the Alternate List on the 5th I have been lurking in the background.

Case is my first choice school, so cross your fingers for me!

"Mostly in jest" ahhh you know me well!🙂 No economy that I'm aware of has ever successfully inflated their way out of a debt crisis. However, I think the question you pose is a legitimate one for our leaders as it seems as though this is exactly what they appear to be trying. Oh you'll never hear them admit it or announce it as policy, but when they print over a trillion dollars under the guise of quantitative easing, the net effect is the same and it appears we're starting to see some significant inflation. And that is no joke. Also the Chinese don't think it's funny either as they just dumped $600 mil of our bonds.

Now if I could just get off this darn alternate list, we could head over to Little Italy for a meal and solve all of the world's problems!:laugh:

Hello ninja friend! I wish you and the other waitlist crew much luck and zen during this next month. Everything this past year has gone soooo fast, I can hardly believe I was in your shoes a year ago ><

I'm super happy, our fundraiser dinner for the Lamay Peru Medical Missions Trip last weekend brought in over $5500! That's going to buy TONS of meds and vitamins!

The Lamay Clinic project is a student-run medical mission to Lamay, Peru. It's a collaboration between CCLCM and UP - we plan and organize this massive undertaking. UH, CCLCM, and Metro physicians, nurses, pharmacists, etc along with we medical/nursing/dental students will be in Lamay and surrounding rural mountain villages for 4 weeks this summer, giving care and providing vitamins, meds, eyeglasses, physical therapy exercise classes, infant CPR classes, etc. It's an amazing project that brings together a lot of different people. We as med students do patient exams and histories, and have a lot of individual time working alongside the attendings and residents. Those who went last year can't say enough great things about it. So excited 😀

That sounds fantastic! Is it an annual thing? I was thinking I'd do research next summer but I'd love to get involved in something like that.
 
Oh yes, it's every year! It's an amazing opportunity to be a part of bringing something like this to fruition, learning how to make things happen, and working closely with physicians and an interdisciplinary team. And it's freaking Peru - I get to see Macchu Picchu :zip:

I'm also doing a program this summer where I will be working with a fam med physician in an underserved area, called OAFP SEARCH. (Everyone loves acronyms.) I'll be helping with histories and physicals under the doctor's preceptorship. I'll also be helping in other areas of the clinic, going around with other practitioners learning about their roles and the practice works as a whole. I do a community-based research project to help address one area of need, such as health education or resource awareness. I get a $300/wk stipend for the 6 week preceptorship. That $1800 pays for the Peru trip! And it's a wonderful experience 😀

Those both sound like some pretty cool experiences! Did you find those on your own or did you find out about them through the school? Does the school help students find things to do over the summer break?

For a while now I have had a goal to seek out a medical experience out of the country during medical school. It sounds like you have found an awesome one! I figure at the very least it will encourage appreciation for what we have here in the states - and of course give much needed care to those in need.

If only my Spanish was better...

Do you know some already or are you planning on picking up what you can while your there?

I'm a certified Spanish medical interpreter 😀

We have a Medical Spanish program here. Beginner's, Intermediate, and Advanced levels - they have classes twice a week in the afternoon. They don't generally have homework, and they are geared towards learning as fast as you can to be proficient in a medical setting. I help tutor students.

There was such a huge response to it this year that they opened up an additional class and hired new staff. It's a fabulous program, and the intro teacher is phenomenal.

The school does a TON of things to help you find things to do during the summer. There are a million research opportunities, and several sessions put together just about options. The global health department is huuuuuge.

"Interesting" second look at the other place. A bunch of the second lookers and the Dean of Admissions all got food poisoning!!!😱 Well that's one way to get an up close and personal look at the hospital.🙄 They had to cancel rounds and some other stuff. Under the circumstances though they did a good job. Sooooo thankful I didn't get sick!!

Mine's not available yet either. They said we'd get it the 3rd week of April, so I'm not worried.

I hope that is true.. I hope they send it before the May 1 deadline.. I need to make sure I can afford Case before I can go there

question; does case ever give students more scholarship money than they initially gave them. i got a bit of scholarship from case and a lot more money from another school. i'd prefer to go to case, but that amount of money does play a factor. they've got a similar curriculum and it'd be closer to home too. i know U of M and U of C will up scholarship money and was wondering if anybody has ever heard of case doing the same. thanks for all the help!
 
Congrats to everyone who got off the waitlist! For those of you who are still waiting, don't give up. There are some people who got extensions for after April 15, so there may be some more waitlist movement coming in the next week or two. :luck:

Yes and yes. As long as you're not a d-bag about it, what harm can it do to ask? Worst case scenario is that you end up in exactly the same position that you're in right now.
 
thanks for that response cclcmer. that definitely makes sense; i just wasn't sure if the school would view it as a huge turnoff. all i can do is just write what's up in a very understanding way and see what the school says.
