DocTraveler: don't despair! On page 11 of this thread TexasBelle87 reports being on hold for re-review, and on page 12 she reports getting an interview invitation. So stay positive! And keep medadmit updated with all the awesome stuff you're doing!👍

Thanks Mr. Hippo...it's just been a very bad week full of bad news from schools. I guess it comes with the game we're playing, but still stings a lot.

And I don't have medadmits...that would just be another distraction in my day 🙂

LOL nevermind, I know what you meant now...yeah, I sent them an update letter already, but I have been hired elsewhere for another part-time job so I think I will be sending a new update. Thanks for the advice though!

I will call my friend and report to you whatever I can find out if it helps you. She is a 2nd year so she's a recent student and not like someone who was there in the pre probation days. So she can probably comment on whether good changes have happened since they were put on probation.

Thanks, Guju! That would be super nice of you. I am sure lots of others would like to know too. It's scary to think of attending a school with a tarnished reputation.

My friend got in after they were put on probation so my guess is these problems have not occurred as badly since. I can ask her to comment tonight by calling her. I'm guessing they are taking the steps to correct this though now seeing as keeping their accreditation depends on such.

From what I understand GW was taken off probationary status early in February. According to the few articles I've read they were placed on probation due to lack of study space, high financial cost to students, and lack of administrative oversight of clinical programs (and inconsistent clinical experiences by the students that result). All the articles say the probationary period did not negatively affect the way GW students are viewed but who knows. Again this information is simply what I've gathered from reading various articles.

has anyone originally on re-review gotten an interview? did you send an update letter first?

"The Committee on Admissions is pleased to inform you that you have been selected as an alternate for the first year class leading to the Doctor of Medicine degree entering in August 2011. A final decision has yet to be made regarding an acceptance."

Uggggggghhhhhhhhhh. +pity+

Complete 7/20, Interviewed 9/22. 31R, 3.67.

Hey guys,

So I LOVE GW! interviewed this week. On my secondary I put a different name of a volunteer organization than I am currently volunteering with (both dealing with teaching ESL) a bit different though in the population and aspects of the experience. Is there a way to update them after the interview? Should I address a letter to the adcom? is it appropriate to comment on my experience and what appeals to me about their program?

thanks for the advice.

ACCEPTANCE TODAY! I truly feel honored. I really enjoyed the school when I interviewed.

Interviewed in the 9/20s.

And sorry to those who got alternates or rejections. I personally know the frustration from other schools. Best of luck to you!

Those were definitely issues, but there are TWO WashPo articles. The one you cite mentions the less onerous allegations. The second, an investigation, lists serious issues. I have provided the link to the article page where it mentions these specific things:

"When the medical school at George Washington University was put on academic probation last fall, school officials said the reasons were mostly superficial matters, such as problems with administrative paperwork and student complaints about a shortage of lounge space. In fact, according to interviews and documents obtained by The Washington Post, the school had deficiencies that were considerably more serious."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/22/AR2009022202031.html?sub=AR

"Students complained of mistreatment at higher-than-average rates, according to the letter. Nationally, about 17 percent of students surveyed say they have experienced mistreatment, primarily belittlement and humiliation. Accreditors noted a potential conflict at GWU because the ombudsman who handled student complaints also led the committee that evaluated students."

(So not only were complaints of mistreatment higher than the national average, but they were collected by someone with a conflict of interest, which suggests that the rates may even be higher.)

And here's a longer discussion of the matter on studentdoctor:

I'm interviewing on 11/02 and am so nervous, I can't even describe it. Interview situations are usually nerve-wracking to me to begin with, but the fact that this is my only interview (so far, of course, but there's no guarantee there will be more) is making me doubly determined not to blow it, which is just added pressure.

Anyone else interviewing on the same date? Any does anyone have tips for more-nervous-than-average interviewees?

Remember that if they didn't want to know more about you, they would have rejected you already. If you're good enough to get an interview, you're good enough to get accepted. Be yourself, and talk your way through the conversation. It's not that bad, it's just LISTEN and RESPOND. Good luck!👍

EDIT: Also, congratulations Barcu! and CuriousChloride, I think the email is [email protected] (though check it first). Definitely correct yourself if you misspoke, in case they check. And while you're emailing, a line or two about how much you love the school and hope you get in (with a thank you to the interviewers for meeting you) can't go amiss.

Juneilow - I interviewed here the first week of October, and I am for sure a more-nervous-than-average interviewee. Keep in mind what Mr. Hippo said, and also just remember to take a few deep breaths during your interview. It is OK to take time to think through your responses, even though that may cause an awkward silence. It is better than blurting out the first thing that comes to mind. Also, practice doesn't hurt. Think about some of the hardest questions you could be asked, and make sure you have answers for those (I was asked about healthcare and a time that I failed). Also, I have found - in my small amount of med school interview experience - most interviewers dont give a whole lot of feedback. I had 3 interviews and I have absolutely no idea how they went. I think this is normal. Don't be put off by interviewers who don't show a lot of reaction/emotion.
You will do great! Good Luck!

Does anyone know if GW rejects post-interview? Or is everyone either accepted or considered alternate?

I just wanted to thank everyone for posting and sharing thier experiences. GWU is my first choice school and it's been great to have a community of people who are discussing the application process.

Good luck to all!

What to you mean it's BEEN great? Is the party wrapping up? Should we be worried? Do I need to find my date?

Pre-interview ... am I one of the first in the infamous mass rejection?

Submitted secondary ~8/25

Damn... preinterview rejection. Very disappointing especially because I received an interview last year...

Sorry about the people who got rejected today. Were any of you on the "Re-review list / Hold for later review" or was it an outright rejection?

I too was rejected pre-interview. I received the e-mail this afternoon. Good luck to everyone.

Rxn, Righteyehorus, Gridguy, Courtnes, Sid Farkus, Dancingthrulife,.......

Were you guys on Hold for re-review before being rejected?

Rejected this afternoon.

Yep, was on hold for re-review for the past 6 weeks. Then this rejection letter. They were really nice about it though.

3.77/36, completed August 25th.

My sympathies to those who got disappointing news today. I hope you don't get too discouraged because I am sure other schools will see your true worth. Hope you have a good weekend. And just remember: don't let the turkeys get you down!

Wow looks like GWU had a massacre today. Sorry to put salt on the wound, but when were you guys that got rejected today put on re-review hold?

Yes they were. Look at the post above yours and zombymush's. Looks like I survived today. I'm still on hold. If you're interested, I sent an update letter that was very, very detailed. It was 2 pages long, describing how much I love their program and opportunities. I also linked all of those interests back to my activities to support my claims.

Same here .. I've had my gmail open since this morning, and haven't gotten any emails yet. I also checked on their website to see if I'd gotten the rejection, but it still has the same status .. sent an update letter last week. Its 2pm out here on the west coast, so I'm hoping they're done for today haha

Perhaps we will make it to an interview! Good luck everyone!

I was complete early August.

And don't worry - no shame in it. They get tons of apps and very few survive. Good luck with your (many many) applications - it's still early so don't give up hope.

does anyone with USNews how many people GWU accepts versus waitlists? And does their waitlist typically move?

Hey everyone! This is my first post =)! So I interviewed at GW recently and was wondering what all of your impressions of the school were? I am from CA and really was not that impressed with GW. It seemed GW was kind of impersonal and the tour did not impress me AT ALL. How is GW ranked compared to other programs? I have one acceptance already from another program. It may also be because of DC itself. Not a great fit for me. So I guess I am asking what the pros/cons of GW are compared to other comparable programs? Thank you all for your help!

If you think GW is not a good fit for you, does it really matter how it compares to other programs? Personally I'd rather spend four years at a school I liked with people who also want to be there instead of a school I only went to because it was the highest ranked school I could get into.

i also wasnt necessarily all that impressed with the tour. ive been working at a fantastic top-10 med school for the last 2 years though, so im probably jaded as far as facilities go. GW isnt the highest ranked school that i have applied to or interviewed at, but even after a lack-luster tour and a strange interview, it remains my #1 choice. why? because no other school offers the types of opportunities that GW does. i could work at the white house, on the hill, at the WHO, go abroad to any number of countries etc. etc. not to mention the focus on clinical medicine and the general collaborative atmosphere. i want to do doctors w/o borders/UN work in the future, so this is by far and away the best school for me. the question is, who are you now and what type of doctor do you want to be? and im not talking about specialty..

Alternate list email on 10/20. Interviewed 9/17. ~3.7 GPA, 31 MCAT
🙁 Thought the interviews went very well, but I noticed that they have quite a low post-interview acceptance rate (less than 30% according to medicalschoolsinusa.com)

Does anyone know when we should start sending in letters of intent? I really liked the school! Thanks!

What is the deal with those of us still on hold pre-interview? Is it likely we will get an interview invite or is another mass rejection scheduled in the near future?

Most likely a mass rejection.

I don't know if they do multiple mass rejections.. and the first wave already hit. But for all of you on hold, don't just wait for a rejection. If this is where you want to go to school, show them! a carefully worded loi could be your ticket. :luck:

Any recent news from GW for those of you who've interviewed?
