How catholic is this school? Would someone who is not remotely catholic fit in?

I'm complete!

Just checked the status page and under Letter Received it now says my committee letter and:

"** Your Secondary Application was completed on 07/29/2010 and is currently under review. **"

I've stopped getting excited about "under review" because clearly that means "oh you are in a giant pile and we'll get to you someday" :)

Oh nice, me too :) I hadn't even seen the status page until you posted this haha. I really should read more closely lol

Crap - I just entered my letter packet info instead of entering in each letter. I wanted to get this application finished. Hopefully they are okay with this. I just didn't want them waiting around for letters that were already in my packet.

yeah man not sure what to do. i called, but they were closed.

Same here! :D It's still a step in the right direction!

How catholic is this school? Would someone who is not remotely catholic fit in?

Does anyone know?

Don't think it matters. In any case, I don't think they start sending out interview invites until the end of August or beginning of September, if last year's thread is anything to go by?

NYMC was just bought out by a jewish institution so my understanding is that it is moving away from the catholic tradition. When I interviewed there though I didn't get the feeling of it being religious at all.

yeah I haven't gotten the feeling they even had much of a catholic tradition...more like a tradition of being previously owned by an Archdiocese; I think that's about the extent of their religiosity...

I don't think its that serious. Its extremely rare for schools to be activly religious these days. I went to a small private Catholic college, that's known as like the most religious college in the state... and even then it wasn't really that noticeable. Sure there was a church on campus, but <10% of the students ever stepped foot in there.

Some of us were joking that maybe they wouldn't teach us evolution, but that obviously isn't the case. You seriously would not even know these schools are catholic based unless you read their brochure or go to their church.

Thanks for posting hte link to the directions! However, I'm a bit confused. I have a letter packet of 5 individual, compiled by my department's advisor...How would I list this on NYMC? (I've yet to receive the app, but was curious because the LOR seemed to cause people some confusion)

Edit: I looked through last year's thread...llooks like we list packets as individual letter writers. Just FYI for anyone in my situation.

Edit 2: Just received the app...

I had posted this bit of information prior to receiving my app late this morning...I'm sorry if anyone here missed it. I read through last year's thread to find my answer, and most people came to the conclusion that for "letter packets", one needed to "separate out and list" the letter authors individually.

If my school is on the quarter system, do I enter the credit hours/units in quarter or semester units (i.e. 4 or 2.7)? Does it matter? It's written as quarter units on my transcript, but as semester units on AMCAS.

I'd put semester hours...just because that's how most schools are run. If it's 2.70, they'll realise it is in semester hours.

Thanks. That's what I figured too...I doubt it would make a big difference either way, but I'll just stick with semester hours.

What? I don't think NYMC asked anything other than letter writers. Did I miss anything?

For the LOR section, for a professor LOR, it asks how many credit hours your earned in the course you took with that professor. Its part of the LOR section, not a prereq grid or anything like that.

Oh yes, I forgot about that. I took quarter units but put in semester units since that's AMCAS standard.

Well.. too late for that. I only submitted listing my school's name on the committee packet section. I'm sure adcoms are smart enough to identify my letters

Yeah, that's what I did and I was complete pretty quickly...although mine was a letter packet which included a committee letter...

Ok now I'm a little confused. I know that if we have a committee letter with individual letters in it, we don't have to write all the individual names on the secondary. But don't you think they still want to know which individual letters in the packet correspond to which courses, how many units, etc?

I feel really weird just leaving basically the entire application blank except for the name of my university, when it seems like the vast majority of people here are filling out all that annoying information .... anyone else worried about this?

Ah man... I just put in the # of units (didn't do any converting). I've done both semester and quarter system (which tends to complicate everything). I hope it won't be too much of an issue. There's nothing I can do anyway since I already submitted it.

I mean, if they specifically wanted semester units, why didn't they say "semester units?"

dont worry I did it in quarter units too.. i highly doubt thats gonna make a huge difference

Got the secondary today as well! To further add to the LoR questions, I have kind of a stupid one: For the part where it asks for title, should we be listing "Dr." (ie. a salutation) or something like "Professor of Immunology?"

I think it means "Professor of Immunology," or at least that's how I interpreted it and that's what I put.

For the school name under the LOR, what if the prof left for another college, do we put the most current one or the one where the course was taken at?

I wrote "professor" or "senior Lecturer" or "physician". Boston filled those in on our status page from the letters so I just used the titles that they put on for each letter.

I too have a committee packet. I called the admissions office to inquire about this but it was closed. The time is 12:39PM Pacific. w t f...

If you have a committee packet, you are instructed to list the name of each letter writer.

How strict are they on a letter from the department of your major?

Since the FAQ section specifically states that one letter must be from the department of your major, I would assume strict. I am not 100% sure about this though. Sorry.

dont worry, i emailed them about that. they said to use quarter units if your school is on a quarter system. either way, they have your amcas application to look at too.

source???

are you referring to letter packets with no committee letter or committee letters sent along with other letters submitted to the committee? Because the instructions I read specifically stated that if you had a committee letter you did not need to write out the names of individual letter writers. I linked to it (twice) earlier in this thread.

also, I have submitted and am marked complete with only the name of the university sending the committee letter and associated packet, so not listing individual letters obviously did not cause any problems with my application.

Thanks! That makes me feel better, I was hoping they would figure it out.

Source = NYMC admissions office.
Committee packet = letter of references assembled into a packet and forwarded to the respective destination.

I dont have a non science letter and it wont let me move on without entering a nonscience letter/instructor. What do i do? :(

You'll have to get a letter. Very unforgiving about this, as are many other schools.

How competitive an applicant are you overall? Is NYMC at the top of your list, or is it a "safety" app for you? Without trying to knock the school, because it is a perfectly fine school and has some very nice aspects (on campus housing, no need for a car, near NYC, good rotation sites, etc), if you have plenty of other apps in the pipeline and a good state school option, you might blow this one off...unless you find you need a similar letter for any other schools.

what are we suppose to write down for the evaluator's name? professor, lecturer, etc? I'm not sure if one of my writer's is a professor or lecturer.

I'd suggest looking him/her up in your campus directory or something like that.

Thanks for the reply, I really want to try this school so I guess ill have to get a letter. See, I have a nonscience letter but its from my honors advisor. you think that would count? He didnt teach me anything but he prob knows me the best out of all my letter writers.

Actually the instructions state: 3 letters of evaluation from undergraduate faculty are required. At least two letters must be from scienc ecourses...one may be from a non-science course.

Doesn't this therefore mean that it doesn't have to be? I'm going to call them tomorrow. The only reason I applied was because I was under the impression that I wouldn't need a non-science letter...

I think you're right, from what I remember when I applied. The point is that they must have instructed you in graded coursework. So while you can always add letters from prehealth advisors, research mentors, or whatever - the minimum is 3 letters from people who have instructed you in coursework, at least two of which must be from science professors.

For instance, I had 2 science letters and a prehealth advisor - NO GOOD! I had to add in a backup letter. I had no more science letters, so I got one from a Theatre & Drama professor... I guess it was good enough.

Not very. But it's converting to Judaism anyway. They already retired the old chaplain.

did you all get any kind of "application complete" or "thank you for submitting your application" after you clicked on "submit/complete".

For me, it just went to the NYMC webpage.

Well, considering mine isn't complete...I guess I can't realy tell you much.

I submitted a few days ago (like Wednesday or Thursday..whenever I received it) and my status is still "we received your primary, we received fees, we sent you an email with a password..."

"letters of rec:

(blank"

My guess is we gotta give them time to "process" the application and then it'll say that I "submitted" my app on..a certain date (on the status page at least). When I try to access my secondary, it says I've submitted one.

hey guys what was the page after you hit submit and before actually paying for the app? was it the disclaimer of having the technical capabilities to be a doctor, etc?

Cool. I will give it some time. I submitted mine today and it sent no confirmation. Also when I relogin, it allow me to re-submit it. Maybe I didn't complete it fully yet.

Im having the same issue as you. It will let me resubmit; it's very annoying seeing as I turned this app around within 5 minutes of getting it. Are you using FAP by any chance?

I'm sort of amazed how poorly some school secondary applications are designed; don't they do any testing? How come some schools automatically apply the waiver while other schools want you to print out the confirmation email? The latter seems pretty silly. Oh well.

That's weird that you guys can do that...when I try to "resubmit" I get

You have already completed the Medical School Admission's Secondary Application on ____________________.

My school does not have a premed advisory committee. We do have a letter packet service that just gathers letters and sends them as one file. What should we do for this? They're closed right now.

What are credit hours again? The grade points your earned in the class like an A is 2.70 according to AMCAS? or how many semester units the class is worth?

A credit hour is how many hours a week you had the class. Most classes are 4 hours a week. (Most people take 4 classes a semester and thus have 16 credit hours per semester).
