Surprised by an interview invite during the holiday break 12/27! I thought most offices would be closed.

Anyone else only given one date to choose from? It's also on a weekend which is different than any other interview I have. Maybe this is because I'm an east coaster.

Grats! Definitely haven't heard of schools doing weekend interviews before. Mind sharing stats and completion date?

nah, i'm a west coaster, and i have a saturday too. i was initially offered feb 1, but then feb 5 opened up too. i think they just offer dates as the one before fills up, so people usually only have one or two options. i've heard that you can just call and ask for another if that date doesn't work for you though. but the office is in fact closed from dec 20- jan 3, so apparently they have little electronic elves that send out interview invites during the holidays, haha

To any of the students who have experience with the admissions office at Stanford, do you believe some sort of letter of intent may help my likelihood of getting an interview? I know that Stanford is still in the middle of inviting and all hope is not yet lost, but of all the schools I have yet to hear from Stanford is really the one I'm dying to have a shot at. My numbers make it a reasonable reach, but may fail to convey my love of the school 😀

tl,dr:
Any advice towards helping me nab an interview? This is a definite 'dream school' 🙂

No. They never explicitly said not to send such letters, but they made it pretty clear that we should contact them for only scholarly updates or letters of rec and only after being invited for an interview.

APPLICANT UPDATES
Our policy with regard to application updates is that additional information may be accepted only AFTER an applicant has been invited to interview. Interview decisions are made based on information provided in the AMCAS application, Stanford Supplementary Application, and Letters of Recommendation. If applicable, additional information can then be submitted at the time of your invitation to interview. When submitting additional information, please indicate that you are an applicant invited to interview or we may not include updates with your file. Acceptable updates include any significant developments in scholarly endeavors or projects, or letters of recommendation. Please do not send additional coursework or transcripts unless we have specifically requested such information from you.

Wow! Interview invite on a holiday! I was complete 2 days after you...
Good luck!

do we know that they're reviewing applications in order of when they were completed? that would be great, because i was complete not long after you!

i don't think so, because i was reading on here that people who were complete way after me got interviews way before i did. i think they put people onto different piles after reviewing you the first time, and maybe they go back to those piles or something.

Bummer, because I didn't really think Stanford was that much of a reach for me, but I'm still complete for 3+ months with no word!

Still, I haven't been rejected yet, and I'm clinging to the "no news is good news" mantra 🙂

I hope you are being sarcastic. I would think that Stanford is pretty much a reach for everyone 😉

Did you apply to the same Stanford I applied to?

Haha, well I know it's a top school 🙂 but I still sort of expected an interview!

They interview literally hundreds of people, and even though that's out of thousands of applicants, I've beaten worse odds already :luck:

In any case, every day I repeat to myself "no news is good news."

Stanford Med has roughly a 3% acceptance rate, and less than 8% of applicants are interviewed. We're a small school (86 students) even by MD standards, so we tend to interview less applicants than even other peer medical schools equally ranked (which may have class sizes closer to 150). I wouldn't predict that success elsewhere really makes you a "shoe-in" for an interview at Stanford.

As for waiting, again realize that the admissions process is a bit slower at Stanford than many other schools. We're still at the beginning of the admissions interview cycle. To the best of my knowledges, we've only had about 4 interview days so far with the majority still to happen. As for order, your application is handed off to multiple committee members (i.e. "readers"- faculty, student, admin, etc.) who read and assess your application and then relay this information back to the admissions office. This is pretty typical across the board in the MD admissions process, and a slow response could merely mean an individual reviewer has been slow to get to your application or to write their evaluation. Of course, it could mean other things. Stanford does send out periodic admissions decision (rejections) throughout the year. So, if you haven't received one.... the best bet is that your application is still under consideration for an interview.

Thanks for the input, mdeast. Good to know that interview season is just getting underway!

Yar, thanks for taking the time to post, mdeast.

also, to add to what mdeast is saying about interviews based on my interview experience here in december:

because they're doing mmi format, they can interview more people on a given day. to be exact, they interview 30 applicants on each interview day (split into morning and afternoon groups). so, there's been a total of 30X4 = 120 applicants interviewed so far.

they also told us that once you get to the interview stage, it's about 1/3 chance of acceptance.

anyone accepted yet??? wasn't the first group supposed to hear around christmas? i interviewed in mid dec and was told to expect a decision by the end of jan.

derryz, do you mind sharing when the letter was postmarked?

hopefully there will eventually be a lot of movement on the waitlist!!

The first group was told to expect responses by around Christmas, but honestly as anxious as I've been, I'd rather be accepted later instead of rejected earlier (not that this makes any sense in any practical way). I guess I am just very anxious right now (ahhh!). I am thinking about writing a letter of intent like right now - I also wish they could accept me now not only cuz I really want to get in, but I don't want to spend another $500 to fly around to the east coast for interviews next week...ah!

Just an FYI. Acceptances are via phone call and letter. Dean Garcia will personally call you to let you know you're in. So you'll get that before you get your letter in most any case if you're accepted.

waitslisted, got it in the mail today.

You interviewed mid november (first group) right ?, so I guess those decisions are coming out now.. Did your status change online at all? I forgot which address I gave them... I wonder what kind of news I will be getting when I get back to school... :xf:

Just saw this...cool.

i interviewed in the mid-november group, letter was dated january 3rd, postmarked january 4th. (live in norcal obviously) hope this helps! Good luck to everyone else, i guess not everyone can get their top choice!

:xf:

When I interviewed, they told us that Dean Garcia would personally call accepted students. So, that hasn't changed.

I just realized I misstyped - I was part of the second group which was told to expect responses by Christmas. That's early December when I had my interview.

I interviewed mid-November and was accepted mid-December. Anyone else accepted?

MDEast: Can you comment on the cost of going to Stanford med? I see that the tuition is fairly high, yet the average indebtedness is rather low. Thanks in advance.

I interviewed mid-december also, haven't heard a thing yet.... my heart skips a beat everytime my phone rings!

nevermind... got my waitlist letter today 😎 (btw, I interviewed Nov 16)

Still glad I had the opportunity to experience an interview at such an awesome institution. 🙂

Congrats to those select few who got the phone call!

do you know if the phone calls are during the day or at night time? i have a friend from last year who said he got his call at 10pm!!

Has anyone who interviewed on December 4th received an acceptance phone call yet? Does anyone know when interviewees from December 4th can expect to get a phone call?

What are Stanford's numbers like in terms of # immediately accepted, # waitlisted, # rejected?

Got an acceptance call from Stanford today! :soexcited: Top choice.

Interviewed 12/4.

I ALSO JUST GOT THE CALL AND I AM SERIOUSLY FREAKING OUT RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!

Interviewed 12/4 too 🙂

interviewed 12/4 as well.

JUST GOT THE CALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

beamin' from ear to ear. was preparing for lunch and holding cabbage in my hand during the call LOL.

CONGRATS all! Be sure to check out second look weekend or message the admissions office (or myself!) if you have any questions once you get to the point of making final decisions about where you'll be spending the next 4 (or 5 or 6 years) in medical schoool.

someone should make an admitted students facebook group!

Just a somewhat comical FYI. Remember that Stanford won't refer to your class at the Class of 2015. You'll be the "Stanford Med Entering Class of 2011". This usually compensates for the fact that many of you will be taking 5, 6 or 7 years at Stanford before going on to your residency programs (per research year, joint degree programs, MD/Phds, etc.)

CONGRATS EVERYONE!! YOU MUST BE DOING CRAZY DANCES! wow the inner kanye comes out in me 😛 but seriously, awesome!

ahhhh, when can we expect our packages? it's feels so weird only having the phone call (no emails, no online status change or anything) as confirmation of our acceptance. sometimes i wonder if i was dreaming about the call?

i run at the heels of the mailman everyday!

Regarding any "sour tastes", I hope any MMI interview problems don't deter you away from the positives of Stanford. It's definitely a "different" format, but judge the school more on the rest of your interview day than the actual interview itself. Hopefully the rest wasn't too painful 🙂
Can you elaborate on what "problems" people are experiencing with MMIs? I mean it's only 8 minutes long and it seems easier than a straight-forward interview albeit "different." The people in scenarios can be actors so it's not like you should take their behavior personally.

They put the packages in the mail on Monday (yesterday) for the 12/4 interviewees, as far as I know. And yes, someone needs to make a Facebook group!!!!!!!!
