does stanford screen? It says I have not been invited for a secondary. anyone else with same problem?

Oh I just went directly to the website and tried to register. I did not receive an e-mail notification yet.

There's an interesting medical attitude survey as part of the app. I couldn't tell if its factored into your admission consideration.

not for the secondary, but i hear they have automatic cut offs once you pay up.

I was wondering the same thing

Health Belief and Attitude Survey

Is anyone still waiting for the secondary?

anyone see this under letter of recommendaiton incomplete? :

Committee Letter (my advisor's name)
Incomplete - committee letter Letter received by AMCAS 07/2*/2010 Letter sent to Stanford 07/2*/2010

My letters were sent in July and received everywhere else... what else there to complete? Maybe they just haven't filed it yet?

Exactly the problem I just noticed. My committee letter wasn't in AMCAS 'til this week so I'm hoping it just takes Stanford a while to process, but I have the same "incomplete" marked on the application status page.

If you read the wording carefully, they're only assuring you that if this survey is used as part of larger research they'll make you anonymous. They're not saying that your survey will be detached from your app.

Starting this admissions season, the School of Medicine will be using a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) process to evaluate applicants. It has been demonstrated by other medical schools that MMI reduces individual interview bias through multiple raters, evaluates many areas of competency, and is a valid predictor of future clinical performance. During MMI, applicants will rotate through 8-10 stations and discuss the scenarios provided at each station with a rater. Further details will be provided on the interview day.

Crazy!

you're right ... sneaky.
haha i guess i just assumed that's what they meant.

Wow bizarre. What med school actually does this?

So happy to hear from Stanford! Though it would be nice if we had made it past some sort of screen first.... Regardless, gonna fill it out and get it in quickly! Good luck everyone! :luck::xf:

+1 on this issue here

I just sent my letters in... noticed they say 7-10 days to process them after they arrive

"Letter status will be updated at this site within seven to ten days after your letters have been received from AMCAS."

U of A has also adopted this interview style.

The entire MMI thing is Canadian in origin. It was created by MacMaster Med in Hamilton Ontario. Most of the Canadian schools (outside Ontario) are doing MMIs including McGill in Montreal. I have heard Cincinnati was doing it last cycle and I am very surprised Stanford is doing it. I did MacMaster's MMI last cycle. The entire thing took around two hours. Very quick and somewhat enjoyable/fast paced. However, it is near impossible to prepare for and much more difficult to gauge yourself post-interview. The stations vary in subjects from health care policy to specific characteristics such as teamwork, leadership, critical thinking, etc. While I did enjoy doing the MMI, I ended up being rejected post-interview. Best of luck to everyone....

Sounds a little like the consulting/I-banking process. (At least circa 2001--don't know if it's still the same.) Not too bad, really. Other than making sure you're not sick or under-caffeinated, there's only so much you can do to prepare, which takes the stress level down at least a half-notch.

do you have to be verified to get access to the secondary page?

i tried it and couldnt get on, and im not verified

is the secondary similar to last year's?

do you have to be verified to get access to the secondary page?

You have to wait until they send you an e-mail confirmation of your application to create an account.... it actually states that on the welcome page.

Stanford Website said:
This site will ONLY be accessible to you once you have been contacted by Stanford.

just noticed something. unlike last year's prompt, there is no "sexual orientation" in the list (culture, socioeconomic status, race, etc) in the diversity essay.

interesting..

hahaha im aiming to submit today, and you're speed dating idea is hilarious, i may actually do that as prep no joke (but then my reputation would be ruined for eternityyyyyy)
and what is up w/ 86 student class?!? freaking 1.4% acceptance rate (excluding peeps that don't go, prob around 2.8% acceptance rate i guess)

Yes. Stanford shares (with the Mayo Clinic) the lowest acceptance rate among US medical schools. Usually varies between 2.0-3.5%.

As for the 86 class size, Stanford purposefully wants things to be small in order to ensure an intimate environment for students where everyone gets A LOT of individualized attention. That being said, Stanford does have plans to increase the class size in line with AMCAS recommendation that more physicians need to be trained in the United States. The new medical school building was designed to accomodate 110 students in the medical school class for the eventuality when Stanford will slowly expand to that size. Definitely an unique environment, and one with both it's pluses and minuses.

Good luck on the secondaries guys! Be prepared for a long wait. It takes 3 faculty member reviews and the Admissions Directors review of your application to receive an interview. Given there are only about 450 interviews handed out...and most interview days consist of 3 students...it is a spread out, somewhat slow process.

Patience is a virtue. Learn it now 🙂

guys i need some help-

here's my situation. i have the three required LORs already with AMCAS, stanford has already downloaded them

however, i just got a new LOR that is being uploaded to amcas later this afternoon.

stanford does not accept LOR's after you submit your application
however
will they count my last LOR if i submit my app to stanford after AMCAS receives it and it is designated for stanford,
OR
do i have to wait until stanford downloads/receives the letter, which takes like 2 weeks?!

i emailed the adcom, no reply yet. and i always get a voicemail when calling :'(

No I actually had 5 individual letters, they said incomplete at first but a few hours later they all say complete.

I assigned them to stanford about a week ago.

For the Scholarly Concentrations question, if one concentration in particular interests us, is it okay if we go into some detail about why we like that one and what he hope to gain from it? Or is it better to just be general and say why a concentration in general will be beneficial?

I don't want them to think that I've definitely already selected one, but there is one that I particularly like.

I don't see anything wrong with going into a specific one... and that's exactly what I did

For the path of medicine we are suited for, I chose academic medicine. I essentially addressed why I am suited for and want to enter academia, but I didn't specifically address why I want to go into medicine. I did this because I thought my personal statement would already address "why medicine?". Is this fine or should I talk about something beyond my teaching experiences?

If anyone could help, especially mdeast that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I did the same thing, but there was some overlap since my motivations for academic medicine and medicine in general are somewhat similar. I think you're approaching it correctly, though - you definitely don't want to just repeat information.

Yup. This is exactly what the question wants you to answer with. Stanford at least wants to gauge what sort of direction you're interested in taking your career (certainly, people change their mind while in school...so don't feel this is obligating you to any specific direction). It more helps them gauge how a Stanford education might be useful for the path you want to take in medicine. And, certainly, for making sure they enroll a class that has diverse interests in where they want to go with medicine. 85 is small...so they don't need 85 academic docs.

Stay patient and work on getting the secondary in within 2 weeks 🙂

According to MSAR, they don't screen. They're probably sending them out in batches... just give them a couple more days 😎

Hi there--this is my first post, so please let me know if this is not allowed or if I'm doing it in the wrong place! 😵

I was just wondering if I could get some thoughts...I believe I have good stats (43R/3.9ish) but my ECs aren't anything spectacular (a substantial amount of research but no pubs and some community service and other activities), and I was a bit of an idiot and submitted AMCAS very late (still waiting for verification 🙁 )

I realize that the only thing I can do now is to write as many secondary essays as possible now so I can submit them as soon as I get secondaries...but reading this thread and seeing how selective Stanford is and how late it is, should I expect to get a secondary? Would I be better off putting my effort elsewhere?

you'll definitely get a secondary. pre-writing is a good idea. with an "its too late" mentality you probably won't end up doing well, so i suggest a new, optimistic approach.

You should apply. You're late, but not super late by any means. Plus if the rest of your app is similar to your numbers, you should have a pretty strong shot.
