Did anyone receive a letter in the mail from Stanford inviting them to complete the secondary application?
I didn't, but apparently the Stanford email said we would, so now I'm worried that my rejection letter is also in limbo. :scared:

Hey so since there is no mail on Sunday, all of you with invites got them via email, right?
But on the website Stanford says it does not give out final decisions online, so I am slightly confused.

Final decisions are not given out online. Final decisions = rejection, waitlist, acceptance. I was confused about that at first too.

Does Stanford interview everyone not rejected? as in...are they sending out a ton of rejections?

lol - hoping that if I don't get a rejection for a while, I'll be interviewed one way or another...

Our applications could be languishing in the maybe pile...tucked away in some abandoned office park in Silicon Valley.

PS I was complete earlier than you and haven't heard anything either. I dunno if it means we're both silently rejected??

Secondary info went out via email

Interview invite today!! Complete first week of september. So excited!!

Invite today also!!! So stoked...complete first week of September as well

congrats to everyone w/interview invites! 🙂

i was also complete in early september but i haven't received an invite or a rejection. i will choose to be optimistic.

complete in last week of August, but no rejection either

i will choose to be optimistic as well =/

complete first week of august.. trying to stay optimistic lol

it seems like there have been rejections though, which has been a big factor in my optimism

Hey guys, sending plenty of luck your way!! Optimism wins all the time 🙂
I believe the first students interview in mid november. I am hoping someone decides to share how that MMI goes.

No rejection yet. Also complete the last week in August.

Man, I really want an interview here!! I haven't received a rejection yet so... :xf:

Are rejections sent via email as well ?? or just mail.
so nervous =/

Complete late August, no rejection mail...yet
:xf:

They're sent only via postal mail. Stanford only releases final decisions via mail or phone call (or both). This includes rejection, waitlists, and acceptances. Interview Invites are sent out via email though.

So, my amcas was verified 2 1/2 weeks ago and I hadn't recieved a secondary from here yet. I emailed them and got an email back saying they had emailed it to me the day my amcas was verified. For whatever reason, I never got it. 🙁 I have all my spam filters turned off so nothing goes into my junk folder so I dunno what happened.
Anyway, they resent the email today, I filled it out and submitted today but I"m not holding my breath. I know they're slow compared to some schools but submitting 2 weeks before their deadline can't look good, despite the fact that this is my #1 right now.

Sigh. Internet fail.

Hey guys,

I don't remember how the Supplemental Application Status Page looked when I submitted my application, but I just checked the page and there's a "Schedule Interview" option below the "Print Application."

Is the "Schedule Interview" option always there? I didn't receive an e-mail with an interview invitation yet.

I don't have that either - I think that's your ticket to schedule away. I guess I'll be checking my secondary page just in case I'm as lucky 🙂

Complete late August, no rejection mail...yet
:xf:

same here..complete 8/20. eagerly waiting!!! Basically one of my highest preference. Congrats to all those who got interviews! When are the interviews you guys got scheduled for?

Good luck guys. Stanford is slow so don't think much of it so far.

First interviews start next Tuesday. Many of us MS1/2's will have just returned from the Stanford Med VEGAS trip, so we'll all be tired but re-energized by the study break.

hi everyone here is a quick update.

i just got an email with some logistics about the MMI, mainly that there will be 3 groups of applicants staggering interview times.

"Basic Format
: For MMI, applicants will rotate through 8-10 stations and address the scenarios provided at each station. Applicants will have up to ten minutes at each station: up to two minutes to read the (generally) one paragraph scenario, meet an evaluator who staffs the station, and up to eight minutes to discuss the scenario with him or her."

also there is a get-together the night before the interview date! that should be fun as well.

anyways good luck everyone!

mdeast, hoping you comment on this!

I was just talking to a friend of my parents who taught at Stanford a few years ago. She tells me that she felt med students did not get enough clinical exposure because Palo Alto could not provide it. She also felt that the people in the city were very "power driven". It was always a hassle to get a table for dinner, etc. I was surprised to hear this from her because even though she is from the North East she has lived in California forever. Eventually she ended up working at UCSD.

I think this is a common misconception about Stanford and an image that Stanford has been trying to shake off for a while. Yes, Stanford is a huge research institution with an amazing number of interdisciplinary programs acros the many graduate schools. If you're at all interested in something outside of strict clinical medicine (science research, policy work, community health advocacy, engineering, business, etc.)...Stanford is basically "Candyland".

BUT, what I will refute is that the clinical training for med students is poor here. First off, Stanford is a small school in which students are generally treated with a lot of respect and are given a ton of attention (they act as the main focus of the school, there's a reason why we wear long white coats instead of the typical "short" med student coats). You have ample opportunities to see patients your first two years: we have 2 free clinics (Arbor Clinic at the VA Palo Alto and Pacific Free Clinic in San Jose), shadowing opportunities, formal classes (early experience in "your favorite specialty here"), longitudinal experiences (childhood chronic illness, "mommy's to babies"...where you follow patients over a long time), etc. We have a POM class where we spend twice a week practicing clinical skills with standardized patient actors (about twenty 1.5 hour sessions this semester). Second year POM also adds practicum. As a first year you and three other students are placed with a Educator 4 Care, usually a primary care practicing physician who acts as your personal advisor, teaches you clinical skills, arranges shadowing if you're interested. In addition to your E4C, you also have an academic advisor who will set you up with other clinical opportunities as well. Formally, you can take specialty elective courses on anything from orthopaedic surgery to ultrasound to "internal medicine". I recently learned percussion from Dr. Verghese, who was recently featured in the NYTimes about his quest to bring back the popularity of using the physical exam in clinic.

Stanford hospital itself is a wide-based tertiary care center, so it draws patients from all over the Bay Area, California, and the country. It's also normally ranked in the Top 10 of all US hospitals....meaning it has great docs, fellows, residents, etc.. The hospital itself is old, but there's a long-standing plan to build an entirely new hospital barring hurdles from the Palo Alto City Council. The patients are diverse from the make up of the area...yes Palo Alto is wealthy, but we're close to East Palo Alto, San Jose, etc. which all contain a high immigrant population many of whom take the trip to Stanford for care. I've heard of some grumblings about certain departments (mainly that working in the ER at Stanford is boring)...but you have to remember that you also have access to complete rotations at the Palo Alto VA (best VA in the country), County Hospital, Kaiser-Permanente, etc. Having said all that, Palo Alto isn't NYC for instance. You'll get a different patient population and their just entirely different environments to practice medicine in.

Remember though, you're not practicing medicine yet...you're just learning the basics and seeing what field you want to go into.

So.... don't get too hung up on the clinical education between medical schools. Every school will provide you with the opportunity to try out a ton of specialties and learn at least the "bread and butter" of medicine. The majority of your clinical training comes from residency. So you really should be picking medical school on the environment, geography, curriculum, research opportunities, P/F grading, etc. at every school.

In terms of the area....Palo Alto is a wealthy suburban town. I usually don't go out to eat there because things are over-priced, though there are a few local bars I frequent, including a wonderful english pub. I honestly spend most of my "fun" social time in Berkeley or SF, or doing more low-key events around campus and the Penisula. Though, there is a decent selection of more affordable places on Castro Street in Mountain View that I do try and head to. I've never had trouble getting a reservation...but maybe it's because I don't frequent $50/plate restaurants 🙂

Yay! I suggested a pre-interview get-together so either someone listened to me or other people have great ideas too. Glad it's happening.

Does this mean that only people who applied EDP have been accepted so far? Were their interviews mini multiple interview style as well?

Thanks!
BTW, I sent you a PM but not sure if it went through...

has anyone actually been rejected yet?

Yes, some people have received rejection letters through snail mail (check earlier in this thread).

I haven't received anything yet and I've been complete for 2 months. Some people that were complete 2 months ago already received interviews, so it doesn't seem to follow a timeline as tightly as other schools do.

You summed up exactly why I am dying to hear some good news from this place, my interests in medicine are really interdisciplinary...that and a huge desire to make the Bay area my permanent home.

On my last trip to Stanford I somehow ended up at some cheap-but-good pizza joint in downtown Palo Alto. Wasn't as posh as the food Stanford itself fed me but still the perfect college-y food. I think there are some budget-friendly eats/entretainment options if you look hard enough. However, you are always welcome to party in Bezerkeley, even if nights here tend to end quite early!

A more serious question: how does Stanford feel about pre-interview update letters. I'm finishing my first semester of graduate school next month and am oh-so-close to landing a grad student researcher that I will hopefully have until I start med school:xf: . Since so much will change in the next month of my life, should I update the schools that I applied to once this all goes down? If so, who do I contact?

Easy answer: don't send pre-interview updates. Stanford won't add them to your file and they generally don't want you to update your application until you've been offered an interview. Given their admissions process, all the info they need to make decisions on interview invites is in the primary and secondary app.

Hi!!

I just got an invite I'M SO EXCITED OMGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!

I was wondering, since I am not coming from the east coast, if I should not sign up for the ONLY date available but is on a monday and they say not to sign up for mondays and fridays if you're not coming from the east coast - but it's the only date available!!!

Just out of curiosity, when were you complete?

9/1 on the dot! My secondary was in 8/26 and I was just waiting for my last letter to get sent.

Ok I figured it out! The site is just really not updated haha. Just schedule whatever dates you want 🙂

they say not to sign up for mondays and fridays if you're not coming from the east coast

Do they give any more explanation for why they made this really odd request? Why should it matter where you're coming from as long as you plan your travel to be there when you're supposed to be there?

In the past interviews took place 5 days a week. So, logistically...it makes way more sense to give those coming from far away weekend days for travel. Hence, why they tended to reserve Monday's and Friday's for anyone East of the Mississippi. Given the MMI interview format, and the fact that there are only 15 interview days this year....that has clearly changed. I think someone is in charge of completely redesigning the website, but it clearly hasn't happened yet.

Good luck y'all.

The Mondays and Fridays thing for us east coasters holds true. I have my interview on a monday. 😀

They said I could book on a Monday even though I'm not coming from the East Coast...I only had one date available as well.

So, this is probably a stupid question, but is there an MD status page where we can check when we turned in the application and when we were confirmed? If so, I must have deleted that email. Thanks!

What kind of scenarios are we talking about for the interview? Hmm well I have til January to figure it out I suppose (only one date posted on the website for me as well). The interview feedback on this site must be from last year since it has no mention of this new format. Can't say I'm thrilled. I very much have enjoyed getting the opportunity to sit down and spend more time with my interviewers. But hey...there must be some merit to it for Stanford to want to implement it this year. Either way: I'm excited!!!

For the curious bunch out there: App Complete Sep 19

And thank you MDeast for addressing those concerns. Patient population we get to interact and early clinical experiences are definitely on my priority list.

so my app was complete august 13th....no rejection letter but not a peep as to interview prospects either. Should I stay optimistic?
