I recently met with a broker to look for an apartment for an August 1st move in that is right around the school. I am certain that I will be able to find a 2 bedroom for a max of $700/person, and probably less. I am looking for a roommate who is interest in sharing the apartment I find with me for at least about 1 year. PM me if interested.

Uhhhh, that seems REALLY low if you want to be in a good neighborhood. Also, bear in mind that brokers/agents will collect commission directly from you because buildings do not provide them with commission in brooklyn.

oh man, just when I think I finish all the forms, then the admission wants to see a letter from my school stating that I fulfill English requirement...what a bummer!!

Ugh i had to do that too....it's kinda funny b/c in 2 yrs youll be doing writeups that resemble nothing like actual written english

Yes, I am!

Very cool. My floor worked together to get through my copy of Trauma Team over the course of this year. Then there was a forensics lecture at the end of the year and we were all like...but where's the creepy cell phone?

$1400 for a 2br is ultra low... I'm looking at an apt in brooklyn heights for 1800 1br lol

oooo....BH...how swanky! I wish there were listings up in that area when I was looking for an apartment! good luck with your search!

Just Withdrew... GOOD LUCK TO ALL WHO ARE WAIT LISTED
AND GOOD LUCK TO THE DOWNSTATE CLASS OF 2015!!

hey, been reading closely for a while, first post. 95% chance of downstate pour moi, and extremely excited about it. just two things: 1) is anybody interested in living in downtown manhattan? financial district and chinatown are the two cheapest areas with access to the right subways (comfortable 2BRs for 2500, price per person gets cheaper with more rooms/roommates). 25-35 minute commute. i guess if youre interested just send me a message. im a guy by the way. 2) is there a 2015 facebook group?

oh, and: HELLO CLASSMATES!

Enjoy Man. You better drop me a line every so often and tell me how its goin🙂

Represent our program yea? We got a person into med school 3 yrs running😀

OOSer here. Is it true that we need to find a place by July 1st to get instate tuition for years 2-4? I emailed admissions a couple days ago, but no response yet.

Not entirely sure, but don't bother emailing administration people...they never answer...a phone call is faster and will get an answer out of them.

I am a rising 4th year medical student. I have lived in the same 3 bedroom apartment for the first 3 years of medical school. It's on an amazing street 3 blocks from the 2/3 train. A couple of blocks from the park. It has roof access to hang out and have bbqs and what not. 24 hour market 1/2 block away. Great restaurants within 1 block. The two other roommates are rising 4th year students as well. Awesome people to live with.

So you may ask why am I moving out of such an amazing apartment?? I wasn't planning to, but decided to move in with my girlfriend for the last year of school.

As a result, I am looking for someone to replace me and ideally we are looking for a Downstate student. I can honestly say it's a great place and super convenient for Downstate students. As an added bonus, your new roommates will give you the scoop on all the classes with access to books and what not that we've accumulated over the years.

Anyways, the rent would be around $1000/mo (depends on who wants my room, which is the largest room). Send me a message if you are interested... want some pictures or want to check it out.

By the way, I was just reading through some of these posts.... I highly recommend not living in the dorms. Most people I talked to did not enjoy their experience there... there is life outside of medical school! The only upside is that it will help you meet people the first few weeks, but you will also be working with these people every day in small groups. The downsides are that it is isolating and the neighborhood dies when the sun goes down. The location factor is really not an issue as getting on the subway for 20 minutes is not difficult and the talk of going in late night is wayyyy overblown. I was staying late in the library by choice late, would take the shuttle to the subway and be home in no time. My two cents.

Hope this isn't inappropriate to post here... but if anyone is interested in a roommate situation (with a male), PM me. Will be going to Med school in the area (not sure if downstate yet) Looking for a roommate for a large 1bedroom/1bath (Divided LR). Columbus Circle (1,A,B,C,D) subway 2 blocks away. Great neighborhood. $1140 + half utils (which could be put in your name if OOS).

I asked the admissions office if I could still get residency if I move in by July 30 and they said yes.

Anybody still looking for roommates? Ideally I'd like to spend under $1000/mo somewhere that's safer than the area around Downstate and is somewhat close to the subway that goes to the school. Right now, I'm interested in the Prospect Heights area.

I just withdrew. Best of luck and best wishes to all still waiting to hear and to everyone who is already going! Take care, guys.

Wow that sounds baller. I would be all over this if I wasn't movin in with a friend.

Oh man, everyone here seems to decide living off campus, and seems like everyone got a nice place already!! Am I the only incoming freshman who is leaning toward on-campus housing and doesn't have any luck finding good place to live?

I don't know about the ratio of on-off campus people (I'll live off if I end up deciding on DS), but I know that finding an apartment in Brooklyn isn't difficult if you're a little flexible (ie willing to live with people), hit up craigslist in July or so, there'll be a ton of places for mid August.

My girlfriend and I will be attending Downstate! She is looking for roommates and needs a lease that starts in time to apply for NY residency next year. Let me know if you have an opening or want to look for apartments with her and I'll give you her email. 🙂

How is the area in Crown Heights? I find that apts there are cheaper but how's the safety, environment and location?

Is the waitlist moving at all?

It seems like some of the people on hold have already been accepted (congrats!!) but those of us who were waitlisted hasn't been contacted at all. I guess AMCAS here I go again.

So frustrating.

Don't worry bout it bud. They'll miss out on the awesome dorm events. They'll also have to travel for the coffeehouses (which you should all go to btw!...you might even catch a performance from Vulcan 😉)

Also when its snowing like a mofo and they didnt cancel classes (they almost never do), you wont need to travel!

Just withdrew my application from the Hold consideration. Good luck everyone.

Most likely. Getting a bit late in the game; I think it's time to narrow my options. Good luck at Downstate though and enjoy it!

Thanks, Buff is a great place; I'm sure you'll thrive there.

I just spent a good amount of time on the website and couldnt find the dates for when classes start, or if/when there is an orientation.

Does anybody know this information?

On the 2nd page of the acceptance letter, it says "When making your plans for the summer, please take into consideration that a mandatory orientation and registration is scheduled for August 15 and will last four days. The start of classes is scheduled for August 22, 2011"

just got in from the waitlist!!!!!!
not sure if i'm gonna accept it though

where are you guys living by the way?? does anyone know if commuting is a good idea?

Crown Heights isn't in the best area; I would say it's livable if you're not picky about the criteria you mentioned (that's the "P.C." way of saying it). At that point though, you could just consider living near school.

Congrats! I'm living in Park Slope and will be commuting by train. I think it's a good idea to commute, but it's really up to the person. We're not very far from the subway, maybe 5-10 minutes on foot, so it's not a big deal I think...then again, I'll find out exactly how "good or bad" it is in about a month when I move.

Hey Vulcan,

Question about textbooks and supplies, I'm just curious about what we can expect the cost to be for books and supplies that we are supposed to buy for M1.

Hey Vulcan,

Ok so here's where you'll get some conflicting opinions.

First the requirements: You will need books for anatomy. These include:

Atlas (I prefer Netter's personally)
Dissector (Everyone uses Grant's)
Textbook (I used Moore/Dalley...not strictly required but I would recommend it)

As for the rest of the material....I used NO textbooks! We give out notes for free which are more than enough to do well. Profs will tell you to get a physiology book and a development book and all that garbage. I did just fine without em. Almost everyone did too.

2nd year is a different story...but cross that bridge when you come to it.

As for other supplies...I might be a bit outdated on this one because theyre trying to integrate some physical diagnosis into MS1 now. For me, we really didn't need any medical equipment in first year. Your preceptor is only going to make you talk to patients from a social standpoint...you guys are not gonna be asked to examine patients until well into MS2. That being said, I do remember a vitals lab in MS1...so some basic vitals equipment wouldn't be a bad investment (Stethoscope, BP cuff, penlight).

As for the other equipment you use to examine patients, like eye charts, tuning forks, reflex hammers, etc., don't get them til youre told to. You won't be using them.

Also be aware: For those of you who fancy themselves good at neuro, there are monthly neuro mystery cases offered by email. First one to get it right gets a win for that month. At the end of the year, anyone with at least one win gets invited to the neuro residency graduation dinner, where they are presented with a free reflex hammer! Also they hold it in a really nice place each year 🙂

Also dont go grabbing up all the stuff you need right when you get there, since they tend to give away book store gift certificates all through orientation. Also, anatomy doesnt start til october anyway.

Love the questions, folks! Keep em comin!

@Asyouwereatrio, could you share the price and specs of the place you got at Park Slope? Did you go through an agent or craigslist?

Vulcan,
Where do students get groceries? Do students take buses to grocery stores or are stores on every street corner? Do dorm residents use the Duane Reade near the school? Do people use freshdirect.com?

Thanks!

I personally use freshdirect...its just so much easier.

Hey Vulcan, do you have any idea why they require a 13 inch laptop or higher? I just bought a 12.5 inch lenovo with 1366x768 resolution, and don't understand how screen size is relevant as long as the resolution is sufficient. Could you give me any advice? Thanks.

im trying to find a BSL class on the redcross website but the location search is down.. how did you guys take these classes? did you call redcross or hospitals?

So I'm not entirely sure why they need 13 inches. When I got my new laptop, they claimed it was so that the testing program wouldnt be cut off on the screen. Nowadays, the exams are given on desktops in the carrels...so the only thing I could imagine theyre talking about is the computer program used for histology.

I would give in a call to check why they want that specific size.

Ehh, I'm not concerned, my screen size is close enough to 13 inches and my resolution is more than enough; I'll be alright.

Vulcan gave you the right link, but just to let you know it's "Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers", through the American Heart Association.

Thanks for your answer! I'll probably just find used books from the interwebs (if it's cheaper)!

I also heard theres an online course you can do and then go for the skills check at some center in manhattan or brooklyn...I need to renew my certification and thats probably what i'm doing
