I took the rail from the University to BWI when I interviewed in November...it's SUPER cheap (1.75 i think, compared to 13 for the Super Shuttle). I took it around 3 pm and made it to the airport by 4.
 
Letter in the mail today: post-interview hold. The letter says that my application is still under active consideration and that it will be re-reviewed periodically. A decision will be made at some point to accept, reject or waitlist.

From what I've gathered, the way it works is that there is no actual waitlist until about May 15th when all the interviews are done and all applicants have been evaluated. At that time, (when apparently any acceptees need to choose only one school if they've been accepted to multiple schools) they will re-evaluate the applications that are on hold and either accept, reject or put on the waitlist. They will update applicants as to how high they are on the list - which correlates to one's chances of getting in - as well as how many open spots there are in the class.

This is just what I have learned from last year's thread; I haven't actually contacted the Admissions Office at this point.

It sounds like those who make it to the top of the waitlist still have a fairly decent chance of getting in. Hopefully I will make it to the top since Maryland is definitely my top choice of schools.

When you sent the signed acceptance letter back, did you receive a confirmation of its receipt?

I received the mail today but it is dated 12/07, took a looong week to finally get here. So is there a facebook group yet?

Accepted 12/21, interviewed 12/8 or 12/9 (can't remember).

Really surprised to hear so soon, Dean Foxwell was pretty adamant that we wouldn't hear till January. How's that for a Christmas present?

Post-interview hold for me.. :scared: Does anyone know anything about this, like when they will tell you if they accepted, rejected, or waitlisted you? I havent been accepted anywhere yet so I'm kinda getting nervous if I have to wait for this acceptance, cause this is my no. 1 choice. But I kinda suspected this might happen cause I did awful during one of my interviews... FYI GPA 3.87, SciGPA 3.94, 33Q MCAT

One of my interview was horrible too. we might have had same interviewer. That status is basically a waitlist in the end. Very few get accepted after that status and the rest WL. If this is your first choice I would send them a letter of intent that could get you in. GL

Thank you! Hopefully your luck will turn around too; it's not over! I would definitely send in a LOIntent, like the poster above suggested. My physician interviewer stressed that UMD wants applicants who really fit - seriously it was like a 7 minute monologue on fit. So make sure that's something you discuss in your LOI. Good luck!

yeah... wonder who fits more than one that has spent their entire time in the state, went to school in their city, volunteered in their neighborhood and volunteered at their hospital and expressed the need to stay there and loved their students... I guess it was not a fit lol Still a great school still love it and love their hospital

I actually hung out with my student interviewer after and asked her these exact questions! She said that there's plenty of social events within the medical school, but not much between professional schools. From her answer, it sounded more like the classes organized these things, not the school itself (which sounds like the norm for most schools).

I asked about competition because they have letter grades, and she said there are the occasional competitive students who you only see at exams, but most people are pretty chill and there's study groups if you're into that and people are willing to help each other out.

My personal opinion on competitiveness is that it's something you can expect from some students at any medical school; for most students, that trait is partly responsible for their fortunate position at a medical school period. But everywhere I've interviewed, the students say everyone is super helpful and nice. I got this impression at a few schools more than I did at Maryland, but that isn't to say Maryland has mean, cutthroat students in particular.

There is no competition. There is no curve. If anything, students are too willing to help each other; sometimes my email gets bombarded with helpful websites, charts ppl made, ppts etc. there are obviously ppl who want to do derm, plastics etc, they work their butts off. you cant sabotage anyone elses grade.

i dont know how the above poster's student interviewer could feel the competition emanating from a person who's not speaking to them during a test and doesnt come to class...maybe they've got a gunner sense.

the first and second year classes throw tons of events. always post exam parties, and a couple other big events a year. but there are smaller happy hours almost every other week and tons of other things organized. theres maybe 3-5 big events hosted by the school itself every year that include all the schools. the law and pharm schools seem more interested in hanging out with us than we with them

Does anyone know how Maryland handles prep for Step 1, the pass rate there and/ or the average score? Is there a review course for the students? Thanks!

Id like to know this as well and also, do students get time off at the end of year two to study for Step I before starting rotations?
 
How late do interviews go for UMD? I know it is probably not a good sign that I have to ask, but I was just wondering how late is too late to expect an invite?

I'm in-state and attend Univ. of Maryland and I am studying Bioengineering so it's natural I would apply to Maryland.

2nd years this year are let out on may 9th, and rotation orientations start 29thish of june. so that gives about 7.5 weeks until your next major obligation. most ppl are taking it june 15-20th, to give about 5-6 weeks of studying, with a little room left over for a small vacation. 😀

not exactly, but I would count covering all the material over 2 years of medical school as enough.

the average is something like 220, i forget the exact number she has told us, but that is very close, if not exactly what we have been told. pass rate is always like 98-99%. Dr. Dolan (in charge of guiding students through step 1 along with many other duties) has told us that the only reason people have not passed in the past, is due to family issues, e.g. death of parent, illness etc.

Also, to the student that asked earlier about STC rotations. During the 12 week rotation in surgery, 2 of them will be spent with the team at shock trauma, overnight on call, and the full experience. everyone is required to do it.

I spent quite a bit of my 4th year there in addition to the required time during 3rd year. I did a Trauma Surgery Sub-I in July and a Trauma ICU sub-I later in the fall. Also I did a month of plastics and during that month I spent as much time as I could there - pretty much any time a flap was scheduled or a big face case.
 
Just got my award letter in the mail last night (it was sitting in a mail pile for like a week until I got home). I cried. Looks like I'm going to be in the UMD class of 2015 😀

Hey congrats! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone this fall. When you say "award letter" do you mean financial aid or acceptance? I'm curious to see how much this is gonna cost me as an OOS'er.

I mean the Merit Scholarship letter. I'm still waiting on my W2 to fill out my financial aid form. As for OOS cost, they gave us a packet during the Financial Aid presentation on interview day that had a cost breakdown for in and out of staters.

Also, is anyone going to the Dinner they're holding Feb 5th? I wouldn't mind seeing a friendly face.

wow congratulations on the merit scholarship! I didn't know they were sending them out already. I wonder how many they've sent out, and if they give a decent amount. I'm an OOS that got accepted back in Nov, and unfortunately the tuition amount is pretty high, so if I heard back about any merit scholarships that would be fantastic.

also, how did you learn about a dinner on Feb 5th? I haven't heard a peep since I mailed back my acceptance letter to them in November...has the school been in regular contact with you? has anyone else heard anything since an acceptance?? I'm a little worried now that maybe I didn't return my acceptance letter correctly or something....

I'm sure you don't have to worry. I think it was just because I live like half an hour away from the school. It's not a dinner for accepted students or anything, it's a function the school is having where I'm tagging along sort of thing.

I was accepted back in October, and the only thing I've heard from UMD is the email on Jan 10 congratulating us and telling us to join the official facebook group.
