There are plenty of both. There are many opportunities to volunteer, either medically related or not. In particular, we have SBHOME, which is a student run health clinic for the medically underserved/uninsured. Pre-clinical students have the opportunity to volunteer, and are generally put on triage duty. They then accompany a clinical student while the patient is assessed and meet with the attending to present the patient and formulate a treatment plan. This is a very good way to get some clinical exposure. People can also volunteer at health fairs. There is an exercise program for children through the pediatric cardiology department, and plenty of other volunteer opportunities that I'm just not thinking of at the moment.

There isn't much formal time in a clinic during the first year. During second semester, 1st years are assigned to a preceptor and spend some time in a clinical setting. I believe 2nd years spend a little more time in the clinic than we do. We are frequently encouraged in specialty interest group meetings to throw on our white coats and hang around out on the hospital floor for a few hours to get a taste of that particular specialty, but I have yet to do that 😳.

Congrats on your interview, and good luck! .

Thanks for the info 🙂

Interview Invite!

So, a question for all of you that have interviewed here already. The email just said to contact Ms. Acevedo. Does Stony Brook offer a list of dates that we can schedule an interview for? Do we contact her with a list of dates that work for us or just to say that we accept the invitation to interview?

When did you get the complete email ? Stats ?

To those accepted, congrats!! When did you interview?

I interviewed here recently and it is definitely my top choice from where I've interviewed so far! I loved everything.

Any SBU medical students reading this thread? This thread doesn't get as much activity as the other SUNYs.

I'm curious about the housing situation. Do most students live on or off campus? For on-campus, how much does it cost and do students end up mixed in undergrad complexes? For off-campus, what's the going rate for 1-br or 2-br apartments? What's considered a reasonable distance to live away from campus (given traffic)?

As far as the interview goes, I hear that they will notify you a week in advance of the time that you are supposed to arrive on campus and how long you are expected to stay. Out of curiosity, do they give you any information about your interviewers? Name, position, department, or anything?

You will receive that info when you first arrive. But not beforehand. In general you will have two interviews. On the day I interviewed, most of us had one student interview and one faculty/physician interview.

I would say more than 95% of the students live off-campus. To the minuscule minority that live on-campus, they live in graduate student housing. You will never have more freedom than living off-campus. Cost varies and it depends on what you and your roommates can afford/desire. With utilities included, you can expect to spend anywhere from 500-800 a month for a room in a house/apartment. Most of us live in Stony Brook, Port Jefferson, Port Jefferson Station, East Setauket, etc... Basically any of the towns that are within 8-15 minutes driving distance from the school.

do you think I should bother submitting the secondary application now?

I guess I am one of those students who must wait a long time to hear from the ADCOM. I called today and the nice lady at the admissions office said that I should hear soon. Interviewed 10/4.

Hoping for the best 🙂

Hi All,

I'm accepted and am 99% sure that I'm going to attend! I'm posting this in case anyone else who is accepted and thinks they will also be attending wants to begin communicating! It just dawned on me that beginning med school will be a lot like beginning undergrad (not knowing anyone) but that there will be less booze to ease the transition, so I figured I would get a head start on meeting people! Anyway, PM me if this message piques your interest. Otherwise, I'll just meet you in person in 8.5 months 🙂

Man I'm getting nervous. Interviewed on November 10th, anyone else? I realllllllly want to go to Stony. Loved everything about the school

Getting worried because its seems the majority of people that got accepted heard back relatively soon...

Interesting... the Interview Feedback for Stony Brook indicates that more people had just 1 person interview them.

Has anyone here had just 1 interview? It seems like the standard has been 2.
Perhaps a recently implemented change.

I recently interviewed at Stony Brook and I had two interviews. Also, I believe everyone else that were there had two interviews.

Yeah, the average of 1.33 is from since wayy back. Probably includes the older system

One of the posters above mentioned that most of the people that interviewed on his/her day had 1 faculty member and 1 student interviewing them...did the posters here who have already interviewed or been accepted at SBU experience the same thing?

Congrats to all of you who have received good news by the way! 😉

1 student, 1 faculty. Relax.

Has anyone heard back from Stony this week?

I did, my email was just saying my application was complete and being reviewed by the committee.

I submitted in November so I am a late candidate. I am hoping for an invite.

I submitted at the end of August, was complete a month later, got an interview after 2 months of waiting (one student, one faculty although there were a few with 2 faculty interviewers). It's a really amazing school, there have been posts in the suny comparison threads that articulate its advantages. So don't give up hope guys, although you will probably have to be patient.

Accept

kpcrew hope you are accept too so we can have one awkward meeting -_^

When did YOU interview? Stalker...
I interviewed on Dec. 2nd. Sorry if I came off rude. I am just curious how long it might take for me to hear back.

Accepted today!!! Interviewed 17 days ago and completed my application Sept. 29. Good luck to the rest of you!!!

Haha, no I was totally yanking your chain. Long week, so I'm half sane today. Honestly, I would've requested the same info, cuz let's face it, the more puzzle pieces you get, the process becomes clearer.

I interviewed early November, first week.

From the info I've gathered, it usually takes somewhere from 2 - 4 weeks. The fastest I've heard from any school was 1 week. SUNY is a little faster than average, I think.

OOS BTW (Don't hate me!!!)

Interview invite the other day. Out of state and completely unexpected. Complete in August. Hope for others out there who haven't heard yet.

Just out of curiosity, will you guys who've recently been accepted be attending SB? I've become resigned to the fact that I've been waitlisted or rejected. I also interviewed early November, and it seems like this past Thursday was a day that a block of applicants were accepted that interviewed over the past month. So since I didn't hear back within two weeks like many, and I missed this "cut", looks like I'm out of luck. Still holding out hope, buts its tough... This is my last shot until I'm officially waitlisted at every school I've interviewed at..
😕 🙁

Relax bro. They said 4 - 6 weeks and we're hitting winter break. You're gonna be fine.

As for your other question, I don't know. SBU is one of my top choices, but it comes down to money. I'll have to look at my financial aid and my options.

However, if you tell me I'm beautiful, I would be more inclined to withdraw to improve your chances by 0.001%...
