I'm sorry to hear that, but honestly you can't blame the tour guide for the rejection. We have no idea what your names are.

And to briefly play devil's advocate, your question doesn't have a straightforward answer. As a person outside of the match, I can only look at the match list and tell you where people end up, but I can't tell you anything about where they wanted to end up. I'm sure there are people who wanted to stay at Downstate but matched elsewhere and people who didn't want to stay and matched at Downstate. But beyond that, I can't offer any elaboration.

I wasn't really blaming anyone. I apologize if I gave that impression. It was intended more as a lighthearted anecdote than anything. Of course I don't seriously believe that this issue was the deciding factor in my evaluation. SUNY Downstate just had to make the axe for a more qualified applicant. That's completely fine!

As for my question, though, I don't think it was unreasonable. It consisted of two parts. The first was how many students generally end up at SUNYD for their residencies. I was looking for a percentage, which I don't believe is an inappropriate question to ask of a tour guide. The second was whether students generally wanted to stay at SUNYD because of relationships they had forged with faculty in their respective departments. Being part of such a small class, I don't think it would be difficult to gauge your peers' interest in staying at SUNY Downstate for their residencies. SUNYD has some awesome residency programs, so wanting to stay at SUNYD for some programs would be completely understandable and desirable in my opinion.

While my questions might not have been very well thought or straightforward, I don't think they were incomprehensible nor incongruent.

Anyway, thanks for the perspective and insight. I hope I'll have some relationship with SUNYD in the future!

I just received the criminal background check last week from AAMC, and was accepted at Downstate (and nowhere else) in November. I was wondering if any other downstate acceptees have received the cbc, and if so, are you accepted or waitlisted at any other school. Thanks

I received it a week or so ago, and I'm also in at Downstate, as well as three other schools.

probably just misunderstood your question.

Last year around this time people on SDN were saying that the Downstate class was full. Does anyone know if that is the case again this year?

I don't think that's true because i know a friend of mine was on the waiting list last year and got in around may. so there's still hope.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. The class was full as in, the number of acceptances was maxed out, and everyone who interviewed that point and after was interviewing for a spot on the waitlist.

I would expect it to be full or close to full by now, but Downstate takes a ton of people from the waitlist. Probably the majority of the class came from the waitlist.

Downstate has a massive waitlist movement around middle to late May. If you are alternate listed you have a fairly decent chance of getting in. Mind you, that is a conservative estimation on my part but take my words with a huge grain of salt because in no way does an alternate list placement guarantee you a spot (as written on the alternate list letter). Generally year after year from what I've seen on SDN, those who posted that they were on the Alternate list got in. And then some of those who were on hold for spring consideration, were moved to the alternate list and got in.

I know a few classmates who were on hold for spring consideration, got moved up to the alternate list, and were accepted around June.

Take your interview seriously, no matter how late it may be.

I'm only accepted at Downstate (November as well) and I also received the background check request about a week ago. It was processed very quickly (1-2 business days).

recieved the acceptance package with all the health forms/financial aid/etc....does anyone know when all these forms have to be returned by? aka when the deadline is...because I will be out of the country until april or so...thanks!

It's all stated in the letter, so I'd review that to make sure the due dates did not change since last year...

LAST year:

Health Forms were due by the end of June (early July I think?).
Financial Aid is due before early March for Priority Consideration (FAFSA at least).
Acceptance Reply Letter within two weeks of receipt of offer, otherwise it is rescinded.

sounds like I have time when i come back then, I'll get the fafsa stuff done before I depart next week though, thanks!

I wanted to share with you guys a little tidbit I learned today in my ECM small group...basically, we were told by our small group facilitator that at Downstate, we medical students get a pretty high amount of autonomy compared to most other medical schools. Because of our patient pool that is underserved, the medical students get to perform a handful of the procedures and play a much more active role in delivering healthcare to a patient compared to other schools in the area. This attending worked with students from other NYC med schools, and is now at Kings County ED.

Just food for thought for those who may be deciding between other schools. Maybe my classmates can chime in on how true this is?

Interviewed today!

Had a very friendly relaxed interview.
Tour guides were very helpful and honest.

Now starts the last part of the process, The post interview wait!

I am interviewing the 7th and I am so excited and nervous at the same time! I can't stop thinking about it.

I'm sure someone has asked this, but I haven't been able to find the answer on here. I was wondering how long it took people to hear back post-interview? I interviewed on 1/5, so it has been about a month now. Do I still have a while to wait?

In relevance to your question, I got accepted today 😀, via snail mail. IS
Interviewed 12/22 and the acceptance letter was dated 2/1. So looks like it took a little over 5 weeks
Hope you get your good news soon,:luck:.

Anyone interviewing tomorrow? I'll be giving your tour tomorrow! Good luck!

I'm interviewing next week, and I'm taking the train in the morning and arriving at Penn Station a couple hours before my interview. Can anyone help me out and tell me what I need to do to get to SUNY?

Just take the downtown 2 all the way to Winthrop street! no transfers.

from the website: Exit at Nostrand and Parkside avenues. Cross Nostrand Avenue and walk one block on Parkside Avenue until it ends at New York Avenue. Turn right onto New York Avenue. Cross New York Avenue and walk east on Clarkson Avenue until the entrance at 450 Clarkson Avenue. The Admissions Office is located at 450 Clarkson Avenue.

Everything here is correct, but to orient you, I will add that you turn LEFT on Clarkson Ave (which is eastward). Good luck!

Same as above.
If you want a small map to help out try
http://www.hopstop.com/?city=newyork
write penn station in the start address and 450 clarkson ave brooklyn ny for the destination. Scroll down for clear instructions and some nice maps.

haha i used google maps for iphone, then hit the public transportation option. nyc subway system is the bessssttt.

Alright guys, since people still want directions, I'm going to try to be as clear as possible, since it's confusing upon the return trip:

To Downstate:

Take the 2 or 5 line headed to Brooklyn College-Flatbush Ave (depending on where you are) to Winthrop Street exit. Go up the stairs at the end of the platform. The stairs will take you to Nostrand and Parkside, at the southeast corner. Walk straight after you get out of the staircase along Parkside Avenue towards this big brownish-red building you see in the distance--that is King's County Hospital. Keep walking to New York Avenue, which is where the street dead ends. Turn right and walk down New York Avenue until you get to Clarkson Avenue, and turn left on Clarkson Ave (next block down). Admissions is at 450 Clarkson.

From Downstate to Manhattan:

Turn left out on Clarkson heading towards New York Avenue. Turn right on New York Avenue and walk to Winthrop Street (one street north/past Parkside). Turn left on Winthrop. The Manhattan bound Winthrop Street stop is at the northeast corner of Nostand and Winthrop St. (You'll want to be on the right side of the street as you walk along Winthrop).

When I was at DS for the first time taking the train, I thought it was the hardest thing to find..I walked up and down Nostrand like 5 times before I found the Winthrop St stop lol. It's somewhat hidden.

What about if you're driving, is there a place to park?

There is valet near the Lenox road entrance. It is between the Health Science Education Building at 395 Lenox and the main University Hospital of Brooklyn entrance at 445 Lenox.

I think it costs about ten dollars. Directions are on the website if you google "downstate transportation"

Hi, I have a quick question to those who asked the school for a student host...when did you get a call from your host?
My interview's next week and I still haven't heard back yet 🙁

I ended up getting an e-mail setting me up for a night in the Res Hall. I think they send it about a week before the interview.

Thanks for the info! It looks like I'll be getting that email soon then :/

The easiest way to walk if you're coming from the city is to walk along the direction of traffic down nostrand which is south. Then turn left at clarkson. That way you have only one turn to make and clarkson is more populated than Winthrop or park side.

FYI--got a letter today saying I was put on hold for spring consideration. I'm OOS; interviewed 12/22.

I'll be withdrawing this application now, so good luck to the rest of you!

to any current downstate students: can you comment of the integration (or the lack there of) of anatomy with the general coursework since the curriculum is broken up into blocks: ie. do you do the GI dissections when you learn GI physiology in lecture? if so is anatomy spread for the duration of the first year?

for that matter, can anyone tell us in a more concrete way what our schedule would look like M-F? For example, 8am-12 pm lecture every day, 2pm-4pm group sessions, etc. Hofstra gave out a beautiful color-coded weekly sample schedule. Just wondering if there's something similar for Downstate. Will the curriculum/schedule incoming M1s experience be the same as or differ from the one current M1s are having?

Hey guys - IS student.. still waiting to hear back from downstate. One of the first apps i finished, back in September

cGPA - 3.97
sGPA - 3.98
MCAT - 26 =\
really good extra curricular & letters of recc. I'm afraid my mcat blew my chance really at any MD school, but there's still some sliver of hope left in me. Those who got interviews and wouldn't mind, can you post/msg me stats?

Best of luck to everyone!

The block system allows for integration of anatomy into the coursework because the curriculum is organ systems based. So yes, during the GI block, you will focus on the anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and histology of the GI tract. Anatomy is indeed spread throughout the first year. You will definitely receive more information on interview day.

The curriculum is undergoing revision but will not affect the incoming class of 2016. See the following links for the MS1 and MS2 schedules.

gonna be tough for you. almost no chance if you aren't URM. Especially since MCAT is a standardized test. your gpa will help if you are from a decent school (ivy, mit, uchicago etc).

I sorta feel your pain. Been complete since July and still waiting to hear as well.

sGPA:3.97
cGPA:3.95
MCAT: 28R (retake)

I would say the way is integrated into the blocks is pretty decent and I'm personally a fan of it because you are able to focus on that particular organ system during a given block. The only exception is that in GI you also do pelvic anatomy but the reason for that is that the cadavers don't seem to last all the way through march during the Endocrine/Reproductive block.

Three blocks are anatomy heavy: Musculoskeletal, Head and Neck, and GI. Head and Neck is the most intense block simply because there is so much information to digest.

GI is more digestable :meanie:
