Wow, only 2%? I'm guessing the acceptance rate is <1% then?

I received a MD-only secondary as an non-URM OOS with slightly below average stats, so I guess it's possible. Doubt I'll get much further, but good luck everyone!

man, good luck! at least if you get an interview, your chances of getting accepted is >25% (guessing based on matriculated applicant data).

...2% tho HAHAHAH crap.
 
Is anyone still waiting to hear back for a secondary? I received the initial letter on July 7 that they have received my AMCAS.

Submitted 6/13, verified 6/22
 
how many OOR applicants are there? how many of them get secondaries and then interviews?
 
Out of the running. I was at least hoping for a secondary. Lived 90% of my life in WA, went to a state school in WA, my father is a full-professor at UW SOM. The only reason I moved away was because my wife was accepted for a master's program in another state. On to greater and better things I guess...

Chances of getting an interview or even a secondary are slim to none unless you have worked with underserved populations for a significant amount of time. Thats only for the MD only route though.
 
My Dd just googled the populations of the areas and some sort of demographic site came up, not sure if it gave past info, but something general to **** urban vs rural is what they are looking for, I think
 
For those of you who are familiar with Seattle, or have lived there: How is the rain in Seattle? I have spent much time in Portland, where the rain is nearly constant. Is Seattle the same?

Rain would never hold me back from going to UWSOM if I got acceptance, but I don't want to boarded up indoors...that occasion outdoors trip is necessary for my general well-being.
 
Western Washington is fairly gloomy and cool. For me the surprise was how much cooler it is in the summer than other places and also that in March/April it can still be in the 50s most of the month.

WA is cooler than OR by a few degrees as you head north.

Nobody seems to care about that and stay inside, people climb & hike & bike & ski & kayak and do everything all the time, unless it is absolutely pouring. A very outdoorsy culture.

I recently heard somewhere that there are clear skies in Washington 50 days out of the year. It rains most days but pours rarely. When it rains it may drizzle for an hour and then be sunny for 20 minutes, and cycle back and forth.

As mentioned above this doesn't stop people from being very outdoorsy.
 
yeah, having grown up in seattle, i can tell you that the weather is MILD. No monsoon-like downpours, no thunder, not many storms, not a whole lot of sun (although when it is sunny, it's beautiful out here), hardly any snow, low humidity. a lot of days can be consisted of overcast skies, rain, some sun...etc. but yes, the previous posters are right-we're pretty outdoorsy here. if you go to uwsom, the food scene is pretty good-got lotsof diverse offerings nearby, and seattle itself is perhaps one of the most diverse cities out here.

So if you come from a place where you never see asian, african/african-american, eastern asian, and latin people...get ready for a culture shock. lol.

Oh, and when it's summertime-i would argue that there are very few places that can top a seattle summer. Mild sunny days are awesome.
 
It really does seem like a life in Seattle would be incredible. You've got a big city to get your culture and entertainment fix, while there is still the temporary escape and clarity provided by mother nature. Best of both worlds, I'd say. Thanks for the replies.

Word of advice: I got an invitation to apply to Washington from their program director, then got rejected without interview. Should you receive such a letter, promptly ignore it and save your money unless you were already planning on applying.
 
I received the initial letter 3 weeks ago. Still haven't heard anything. Is this a good sign or a bad sign? I'm OOR.
 
did anyoen receive an email from admissions to apply for the TRUST program? I don't know much about it but it seems like an awesome program

You can still email the admissions office about this. I guess it might not be your MCAT. May be just ask them to reconsider you at least or know the reason why you were rejected. According to Dr. Teitz in her Focus Group Session, you can ask them through email.

to add to kitanai, i know that Dr. Teitz will sit down with you and have a serious look over your app if you don't get in anywhere. But i would definitely try and figure out why you were rejected

sorry to hear! I think UW is not one of those schools that plays into the whole stats cut-off thing. One of my friends was rejected presecondary with a +35 MCAT and experience as an EMT. So you never know..Good luck!! Just keep at it!

Because I had an interview last year with the same MCAT score, and it was before getting an average of 3.95 GPA on my post bac science classes, plus, English is my second language.

I did that after I was rejected post-interview last year and I did EC's to strengthen the weaknesses that Dr. Teitz told me. So it really doesn't make sense that I didn't make it as far as last year

Perhaps as a re-applicant, they have different standards (i.e. not a simple comparison of your app prior and your app now). Maybe they wanted to see even more ECs (or specific types of EC) than you've pursued?

Either way, I'm sorry to hear about the rejection. Med schools can be very arbitrary...
 
So I know this school is a reach since Im OOS but I received their notification of AMCAS on 7/7 and haven't heard anything back yet. I wondered if others knew if they take the full 6 weeks to look over OOS before sending a secondary invite or rejection? I guess no news isn't bad news right?

I suggest that all the more you have a reason to email them for a reconsideration to get an interview. Tell them your situation that you did what they recommended you to strengthen your application. Be proactive! You'll not loose anything in trying! 🙂

Quick question on the secondary - the TRUST part is optional and I don't plan to apply to the TRUST program. Should I open it up and hit save and not fill in any of the questions? Not sure if you need to do that to finalize your application or not. I have all the other sections submitted and my application fee has been received. I just want to make sure I get put into the queue for review. The UW secondary is a little different than most apps since there's no final submit button.

I have the same question as well. Does anyone know if any action is necessary on our part if we don't plan on applying to TRUST?

It says optional so you don't even need to open it. I didn't do anything to it and my file has since moved to complete.

I am in the same boat. I think they very carefully scrutinize the applications of OOSers to make sure the individual is a mission match. Plus, I also don't think OOSers are given as high of a priority when reviewing files, but this is just my opinion, not validated or substantiated in any way :luck:
 
Has anyone moved to Washington sometime after March 2011, tried to verify your WA residency with the Residency Office, and been told your residency verification would not be complete until 6 months after moving to WA?

I was gone from WA for only a few years for work, and recently moved back. Now my MD app is unable to be marked complete and set for review by the Admissions Committee until late October when my residency is verified retrospectively. It seems that they should review residency verification prospectively (ie, now), then re-confirm 6 months after living in WA. Seems poor practice to have applications sit in limbo...
 
Does anyone have any experience with how long it takes UW to download letters of rec? They've all been submitted via AMCAS. I finished the secondary about 1.5 weeks ago but all of my letters are still marked as "Not Received". I know they have a warning saying it may take a while, but just trying to find out if this kind of wait is what other people experienced as well.

AMCAS submitted 6/10. Secondary middle of July. Letters were marked received right after I sent in my secondary, so maybe it took 4 weeks? However, if the wait gets too long, you can always send an email to inquire if they have been received in their office.
 
Received my initial letter on July 15, emailed them this week and they are now saying it could take until September 15 for a decision to be made on whether or not I will receive a secondary. I'm OOS
 
I got a secondary yesterday and I'm a non-URM OOR. Got the initial letter 7/25. I don't know how in the world I passed the screen, but someone mentioned that if you're not from the region, the only way you'll get a secondary is having lots of experience in underserved medicine populations and I definitely fit that bill--in fact, the secondary invite says that the interview would include meeting with someone about opportunities to work in underserved medicine.

Does anyone know what's the chance for getting an interview once you get past the secondary screen?
 
Complete today. Submitted 8/8 so took about two weeks for them to process my LORs.
 
Received an email today.

REEEEEEJECTED!

Should've known better, I was applying OOR without extensive service to underserved populations.

After growing up in Seattle for 18 years, I can tell you that it is probably my favorite cities I've been to (and I've traveled quite a bit). The rain is a HUGE misconception. Yes, it will rain and it may be overcast quite a bit, but it doesn't rain THAT much. And when the sun is out, nowhere can beat it. If you get a chance to live in Seattle for 4 or so years, there's no way you can turn it down!

Being a resident of Washington, I was wondering if anyone had any data (or knowledge) on how many spots Washington residents actually got in comparison to the other WWAMI schools? Is being a Washington resident really that big of an advantage (assuming one has a pretty good GPA, MCAT, LOR's, EC, etc.)?
 
Complete as well. Took awhile for my residency verification. ID applicant.

Rejected pre-interview a week or so ago.

Pretty devastating this early on from my top choice. Luckily I have a couple interviews elsewhere to ease the pain. I was hoping for a different response, especially after shadowing and doing 100s of hours of research at UW. They sent a nice email letting me know what they said my application was lacking, all of which I felt I have addressed since graduation from undergrad. I replied with some explanation and am awaiting a response - still clinging to a sliver of hope 🙂.

Waiting is hard 🙂 Looks like last year the first batch of interview invites didn't go out until late September, so we might have a while to go still.
