Interview on Halloween...what costume should I wear?

For those asking about the timeline of interview invites, I remember watching a few of the focus group seminars given by Dr. Teitz: From what I remember, the more competitive applicants DO get interviews first. If you don't get an interview, you're either rejected or kept in the pile for the next committee meeting (strong applicant, but basically waitlisted). If you're OOS, it's 1/month, I believe and 1/wk or two wk for IS?

I got my interview invite last night! Yahoo!!

I know this has probably been discussed, but what percentage of OOS applicants who receive a secondary get an interview?

I have the same question. My AMCAS was verified August 24th and I just received a secondary today. I'm OOS and was wondering if I have a pretty good chance at an interview since they obviously took their time in evaluating applications before sending out secondaries.

My friend said she knows somebody who was accepted to UWSOM today. So looks like they're sending out acceptances! I'm not sure when he interviewed though.

they have not yet sent me a secondary as my final mcat scores did not come in until oct 4.

how long did OOS'ers wait until getting secondary app?

Yeah. I'll take this with a grain of salt given that 10/10 was the first day of interviews. But who knows, anything's possible.

agreed. i thought i remembered them saying you'll hear from us in 4-6 weeks

Yo my friend just got accepted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Booorah!!!!

Any Idaho applicants out there get an interview invite yet?

I haven't heard anything yet, but I don't think they are until January.

Yeah I saw that, in Boise I think? How long did it take for your letters to get added to your file? Because I'm not quite complete yet because the letters haven't been added 🙁

In past years I've had a couple of friends who heard that they were accepted 2-3 days after the interview. I think UW must do some stuff differently from other schools, because they definitely get back to you quickly.

I don't think it could hurt. Did you double check all your residency stuff is in, because that slowed down me being complete. It took me about a month to hear back from when i was complete aug 11, but this was also earlier in the season, so they may just be super busy now.

I know this might be really early, but does anyone know what the stats are of the people who were waitlisted? And maybe the stats of those who got in off the waitlist? thanks!

I was familiar with an applicant from Idaho who was waitlisted admitted off the waitlist with < 30 MCAT idk if that helps, heh

Invitation to submit a secondary. OOR, non-URM with a <30 MCAT and <3.6 GPA.

Watch a secondary app be my christmas present from UW...

what % of secondary invitation/interview does UW have?

By some act of god, I received an invitation to submit a secondary. For those who are interested in the specs, I am an OOR, non-URM with a <30 MCAT and <3.6 GPA. UWSOM is true to its word when it says it considers other factors, such as life experience and volunteer work. For that reason, among many, this school is truly my top choice, and I have done everything within my control to “compensate” for my less than stellar numbers.

So, I submitted my secondary two weeks ago, and as I wait to hear back, I’ve been thinking a lot about submitting an addendum to address my weak MCAT score. I know UW is very understanding when it comes to weak scores, so I feel almost encouraged to discuss my test anxiety.

At present, I am addressing my test anxiety by undergoing CBT and working on practical ways to eliminate the psychological barrier that has prevented me from doing as well as I know I could have done on the exam. I am conflicted about whether I should send a letter to UW with this information. It’s not so much about dwelling on something that cannot be changed, but it’s to show them that moving forward, I have the ability to do well on the board exams.

On the one hand, I don’t want to remind anyone that this is an acknowledged weakness in my application. On the other hand, if I don’t address it anywhere in my application, it worries me that the admissions committee will think I did not try hard or that I don’t care that my scores are weak (I have taken the MCAT 4+ times, so I care very much).

Does anybody have thoughts on what I should consider when making my decision? Thanks in advance for any guidance!

BTW, I did not intend to hi-jack this UW application thread by posting my personal dilemma, but I wanted to get feedback from UW applicants in particular. Feel free to PM me if you have a response.

personally i wouldn't send it. They have sent you a secondary (which very few OOR ppl get) already aware of your MCAT score. thus, i dont think that would be something that would now stop them from moving you forward in the process. i think now they are looking at what you had to say in your secondary! Thats just my thought... wasnt there a question like "discuss overcoming a challenge or something" couldn't you have put that there?

Interview Invite this afternoon! Stunned beyond belief knowing what the odds are for an OOR non-URM to get this far! I was complete 9/6 for those keeping track.

happyinnyc, I think there are places in your secondary where you can address those types of things. There's a question about a challenge in life and a personal statement type thing for you to explain things; I know I did that for some of my secondary responses in explaining some weaknesses and putting it in a positive light. They seem to run a very streamlined process so I'd put that sort of stuff in your secondary not an addendum. To give you some inspiration, I'm <3.5 GPA myself although I did get >30 on the MCAT so they really look beyond some of the numbers.

Congratulations! Good luck. I'm also an OOR non-URM with an average MCAT. I just got a secondary invite. Do you have any advice for what they are looking for in a secondary?

Secondary complete Aug 22nd. Just got invite this afternoon. 8 1/2 weeks.
🙂

I feel very inspired by everybody who's posted to this thread. Congratulations to those who got screened in and those who were invited to interview.

I think they're looking for a genuine dedication to underserved medicine. Being an OOR, they must've seen have that or there's no way you would've gotten a secondary. So the goal of the secondary is to put your experiences together on a personal level beyond what's listed on your primary and demonstrate that UW will get you to your goal of working in underserved medicine and community health.

Congrats on getting this far! It's probably one of the most brutal cuts I know of in all of med school admissions to get to this point.

Thanks to those who responded to my dilemma. I now have a better idea of what decision to make.

...)

I don't know if it's a good idea to send it in now after the fact, but I believe it wouldn't hurt you to talk about it in the interview. The adcom has stated they care about the measures to take to improve yourself. For instance, if you have low grades at the beginning of college, but show improvement over the years, they consider they good (they even weight the grades according to year). I would imagine they would see this a positive because you're taking steps to overcome a weakness. They don't expect perfect people, but they want students who put in effort to do their best.

That's what I gathered from the focus group sessions with Dr Teitz. Granted, I haven't even heard back about an interview and I'm in state 😛

Have any TRUST applicants heard anything back? I know that interviews are not until February but I was wondering when interview notifications start going out?

Thanks.

Interview invite yesterday! Almost 7 weeks exactly to the hour (just off by 4 hours). Good luck to the rest of you waiting.

Hey I just got an invite too yesterday. (Finally 🙂) Did they give you the Nov 16th date by chance?

Good luck everyone!

Yes, they did. I was actually surprised that they don't give you a choice of which day to interview. But it doesn't matter, I'm excited nonetheless. So I guess I'll be seeing you there? If so, you'll be the first SDNer that I meet in person. I can't wait!

Btw, thanks for the luck, slev.
