Not sure if this will be helpful (I don't think I saw anyone else post this yet), but for those getting under consideration emails: From the forums at the end of the app cycle back in June, Dr. Teitz stated that if you received an UC email and it's been a while since you've interviewed it's not a bad thing. It usually just means that they are waiting for more candidates similar to you for comparison.

Usually the top ~10% of their candidate choices receive acceptances soon after the interview, bottom ~10% get the quick rejection notification, and the other ~80% are picked through the end of March / Beginning of April when all acceptances are decided.

So, breathe deeply and reassure yourself, because you've made it this far.

Thanks for the info! By the way, are those numbers legit? I mean did Dean Teitz mention those number by herself?

That's what I heard. I don't remember if she said it during the forums or asking her after the meetings, but it might be worth checking out the videos. The main thing to take away from it is that the majority of people get picked throughout the cycle. Just because they haven't gotten to you right away doesn't mean they won't. Like anybody with a lot of choices to make, they take their time to weigh their options.

The good thing is that you have not received a rejection. They tend to send those out quickly.

Does anyone know how long it takes for UW to upload letters from AMCAS? I know most schools do it before you submit your secondary, but it looks like UW waits until you submit your secondary to upload them?

Thanks

They take about 2-3 weeks. Mine definitely took a good two weeks which was so annoying because everything else was complete already. You would think they would just take 2 seconds to download our recommendations from AMCAS.

PERFECT! : )

Also- are there any UW Med Students on here to answer questions?

Sorry Im a bit late, but I am a current first year and I would be happy to try and answer some questions that you have. For what its worth I am so so happy that I chose UW. The medical school and research are fantastic and I adore my classmates.

Feel free to ask me questions!

DITTO!!! I wonder who this is?

Ask away ladies and gentlemen.

How do you feel UW does with implementing PBL/small groups into the curriculum? I never quite understood how much PBL UW has since it's definitely a more lecture heavy curriculum.

Hey Slev,

As a first year, there isn't that much PBL but there are LOT'S of small groups. I believe as we transition to second year there is more PBL. Currently we occasionally might have a small group session dedicated to PBL but it would be related to our Intro to Clinical Medicine class. As for small groups, every class we have had so far(except one) has a small group incorporated with it. UW values the small group work a lot which helps you get to know your classmates and understand concepts better.

This process takes quite awhile....it took me over a month to go from primary screen to getting the secondary then I filled out the secondary in 1 day only to go another 2 months before getting the II. By the time I interview, it'll be almost 5 months since I got my first notice from UW. But you're in good shape. I think UW tends to interview most of the OORs that they give a secondary too; it just takes awhile.

What exactly are they looking for during the ethical role play questions?
I answered with "what are the state, federal, and hospital laws and policies?"
It was the wrong answer cause I didn't get last time.
Have an interview again. Want to do better this time!!
Thanks!

Fair question, although it's a little discouraging that you still feel unprepared for this portion. Slev had a great answer. My answer: They are looking to see how you think.

Watch the videos from the forums in June if you need more clarification. You can also go through the interview feedback and have people ask you the questions. Review the Bioethics page. Think through it, speak articulately, and don't rush.

Thanks! Yeah, knowing once you've reached this point you have a good shot somehow makes it harder to actually wait for an interview.

Btw good luck on your interview!

Oh, thanks!

Can you talk about what the UWSOM students are like? I mean, I went to UW for undergrad- and there were some craaaaazy premeds....do they all end up there?

I interviewed on 11/17 and all of the students seemed like quite normal people socially. The student body is very diverse in terms of cultural/educational background/life experiences/etc., and everyone I met seemed very happy to be at UW. As far as the interview goes it was by far the toughest I have had and included a role-play scenario, ethical, and healtcare related questions in addition to discussions about my history, goals, extracurriculars, etc. Additionally, they asked how many schools I have applied to/how many interviews/how many acceptances which I thought was a little weird but whatever. Nothing that was asked of me in the interview was particularly challenging, it was just that all of the questions were a bit difficult if that makes sense so try not to stress and just hang in there. Good Luck everyone! Keeping my fingers crossed! Let me know if you have any questions about interview day

I would be curious as to how they weight your response to how many schools you applied to etc. Did they ask where you received interviews or just a quantity of schools?

Interviewed 11/10. OOS. For sure my number one choice! Show some love Washington!!!

Do we have any idea of when the next round of decisions will come out? Interviewed here recently and am hoping we won't have to wait too long!

Just checking in, anyone privy to the date of the next Excom meeting?

hey slev, thanks for the link!

for those who have interviewed, is it more about the thought process than getting the right answer? do you just speak aloud your thoughts?

how stressful was it??

I have no idea, but my gut feeling is that it was just out of curiousity. I'm sure it weighs nothing at all. Also, they didn't ask where, but instead about the quantity and if I've heard back with any final decisions so far.

Dr Teitz has said in the past that they care about your thought process and reasoning rather than finding the "right" answer. They want you to ask questions if you don't know something rather than making something up.

Does anyone know if all applicants have to submit their transcripts each semester, or is that only for those accepted? I am referring to the info they put in the 'complete' email. I'm an Idaho applicant and we don't hear about interviews until December or January, so I wasn't sure if I needed to make sure and send a transcript in January.

Any input would be much appreciated!

I don't think it would hurt to send in your transcripts from recent grades. If your grades are going up, it might actually help your chances.

I think you can simply send an unofficial transcript via email....I'd ask the admissions office if I were you, but that's all they requested from me back when I did it.

And that was even before you interviewed/were accepted? But you're right, I'll probably try and get in touch with them since regional interview invites don't go out until next month or January - thanks for the input!

I've definitely heard a lot about how intense the interviews are there....really odd about the interviews/acceptances question; I'm sure it had to be out of curiosity more than anything. The only time I see this question being somewhat of a challenge is when they ask "What will you do if you don't get accepted into medical school this year?" I'm super pumped yet feeling the nerves about going across the county to interview in a couple of weeks though!

I interviewed last year at a few schools and I was told that the interviewer / adcom wants to see that you're committed to your goal of pursuing medicine. So, if you don't get into school this year then have something lined up that keeps you involved in the field. I was told its not a good idea to say something as simple as "work all year and then reapply." I was asked this question at all 3 schools that I was interviewed

Yep, that was before I interviewed. I called them and asked them about this because my official transcripts were going to be delayed from my school, and they said that an unofficial transcript by email was ok. So call them to make sure the policy didn't change, but I think you would be ok to send them one.

Some acceptances apparently went out yesterday. Got a friend who got in. Pretty sure he'll matriculate.

I'm still waiting on my interview invite :-\

Got a phone call from my excom then an email before thanksgiving. Couldn't be happier!

Congrats! If you don't mind me asking, when did you interview, are you in-state/out-of-state, and what are your stats? Thanks.

Congrats, Light Warrior!!
Acceptances are via email. Sometimes your excom member will also call.

Do rejections/holds post-interview always come via email, as well? I find it strange that only a few acceptances seem to have been released after the last excom meeting, but nothing else...?

Just got the "under consideration" email 🙁 interviewed early November.
