My understanding is that Idaho interviews for Seattle will not be sent out until January sometime. In their letter they said approximately a month before interviews and Seattle dates (for Idaho) are Feb 6-10. I preferenced Seattle as my interview site and so I am hoping that means I just need to be patient, ha!

Any Idahoans out there preference Seattle and hear back yet?

My hope is that I get an II for February then! I submitted in October so maybe all of those who submit first get IIs for Jan? Idk maybe I shouldn't even count my chickens before Ithey call for an II lol

Don't lose hope quite yet! I received an Idaho interview invite for January 12th about an hour ago. They must still be sending them out!

Congrats! I got mine too about 4 hours ago right at the end of the work day! So Ecstatic right now! Re-applicant here, couldn't be more excited about the opportunity.

Congrats on the II's! Prep it up and rep for my home state Idahoans! 😎

Thanks and congrats to you both! From what I can tell, a handful of Idaho residents will be notified of acceptance within a few days of the regional interviews. After this, the admissions committee reviews us the day after the Idaho February interviews (in Seattle) finish up. Does that sound right?

Ahh so excited. And nervous. Sounds like these interviews can be rough!

Received second UC email on 12/17- has anyone been accepted after getting the UC email without sending in update info/letter of interest?

I don't know. Just got a UC email too. Don't know if I should a letter right away or wait until January? Not much to say since I just interviewed a couple weeks ago...

I have some questions about UWSOM and would really appreciate some info.

1) How many hours of lectures are there per day during preclinical years? Are the lectures recorded?

2) Aside from the required rural rotation, is it possible to do 3rd and 4th year rotations all in Seattle?

3) Does the school require a specific brand/model of laptop?

4) Is the white coat ceremony conducted the beginning of MS1 or MS3 year?

Thanks!

I would wait so that letter comes right after the holidays, that way they come back to it after being refreshed (hopefully) from the holidays. But, this is merely a suggestion.

Are they receptive to LOIs? I guess being from Idaho it doesn't really matter because all the people they interview have UW as their #1 lol

1) I forgot all the specifics (though it's gone over on interview day) - for 2nd year, classes are 12:30 to, I believe, 5:30. All lectures are podcasted. 1st year...something like 37 credits? Lots of lecture hours.

2) I THINK so. THough everyone seems to recommend going out to other sites to try.

3) No. But the ability to speed recorded lectures to 1.5x is limited to Windows (no Macs/Linux).

4) No idea.

I don't have all the answers but...

2) You are required to do 3 clerkships out of the seattle area during your 3rd and 4th year.

4) I read that they have white coat after you complete second year and before you start 3rd to signify the transition into the clinical years/patient care.

Interview Invite at the U of I Water Center in Boise on Jan. 12th!

I actually think doing at least 3 clerkships out of the Seattle area is pretty awesome....I really want to go to Alaska and check out Montana along with doing a rotation at a Native American reservation.

Are there any current students on this thread who would be willing to comment on how useful it would be to take a microbiology class as an undergraduate prior to UWSOM's micro?

Thanks!

1) MS1 = 8ish hours per day, MS2 = 4-5 hours per day. Most lectures podcasted now so you absolutely do not have to go to lecture if you learn better on your own. But small groups associated with every class are required and pretty necessary.
2) No. Everyone is required to do at least 2 aways, although most end up doing 3. Keep in mind that even though they may not be in Seattle, just because the rotation is in Alaska or Montana doesn't mean it's rural. Spokane, Anchorage, and Billings are definitely not rural but do count as aways. They do make exceptions to the rule of everyone doing aways, with the most common being having children. Being married doesn't count though. Many students will tell you that this is the best part about clerkships at UW and that their favorite rotation was a WWAMI rotation.
3) No. But it is Seattle, so there are a ridiculous number of apple logos staring back at lecturers during class. Most of the people who have pc's tend to have fewer software issues though.
4) Depends - for people at the WWAMI sites there is a white coat ceremony at the beginning of the year. This is because usually there is one half day a week that you spend in clinic and because there aren't teaching hospitals in those cities so it helps the patients see you as someone who should be there. There is another white coat ceremony (transition to the wards ceremony) at the end of 2nd year for everyone.

Hope that helps!

It would depend on the content of the undergrad course. UW's micro is very clinical with much of the focus being on symptoms, pathology, and treatment. A lot of undergrad micro classes focus on bacterial metabolism and more basic sciency stuff. If you can find a clinical micro course to take then that would be excellent, but otherwise, you really don't need to know how bacteria metabolize sulfur to do well.

Rejected this morning. Didn't bother with an interview.
IS. Reason: Not enough worldy experience - I guess my month in South Africa talking to AIDS patients wasn't enough for them. Oh well... I wasn't to keen on going here anyway after reading about how the admissions process has been going this year... :\

I have got the rejection today as well

In the nutshell, need more exposure on shadowing and a better understanding of problems with delivery of health care in the U.S.

I am not sure how I am going to get the latter part, work in a clinical setting. Got a year to figure out. If any one has suggestions let me know

Good luck to all who are still waiting and congradulations for those with acceptance. I could not join you this year but perhaps next year :luck:

Thanks so much! I have some follow-up questions.

1) You said that 2 rotations must be "away" from Seattle, but this is a part of, not in addition to, the 24-week requirement right? Aside from these 24 weeks, we can remain in Seattle?

2) What are the class & test schedules like? If I recall correctly, courses are not in blocks, so do you sometimes feel overwhelmed with the material and frequency of tests? They're on Mondays right?

3) For those who've been accepted and gave a firm acceptance of admission, have you withdrawn your other acceptances? We're required to do this, but I'd like to know how stringent UW is with this policy. I'm scared of withdrawing just yet in case..something happens. Just kind of scary to cut those strings.

Thank you!

+1 🙂 See you in February!

Any OOS recieved an interview invite yet? If yes, when were you complete?

I was complete on 11/28/11 and haven't heard anything yet. They do say that OOS should expect a longer wait but I am just hoping to hear back anytime now...

Got an interview invite Yesterday for January 24th in Laramie!!! I'm a Wyoming resident who is presently living out of state and will need to fly in. I'm just wondering if there are any other Wyoming applicants interviewing that same day that will either be driving up from Utah or Denver who would be willing to drive me up and back. I am willing to pay half the gas. If your interested please PM me and let me know ASAP so I can get flights. Thanks

Anyone know when the January excom meeting is?

Hopefully soon.....don't they do two EXCOM meetings starting in January?

I'm an out-of-region candidate and I was complete in early September, received an II in late October, and interviewed on the second week of December. You should hear back anyday now. Good luck!

I interviewed on 11/17 and all of the students seemed like quite normal people socially. The student body is very diverse in terms of cultural/educational background/life experiences/etc., and everyone I met seemed very happy to be at UW. As far as the interview goes it was by far the toughest I have had and included a role-play scenario, ethical, and healtcare related questions in addition to discussions about my history, goals, extracurriculars, etc. Additionally, they asked how many schools I have applied to/how many interviews/how many acceptances which I thought was a little weird but whatever. Nothing that was asked of me in the interview was particularly challenging, it was just that all of the questions were a bit difficult if that makes sense so try not to stress and just hang in there. Good Luck everyone! Keeping my fingers crossed! Let me know if you have any questions about interview day

I was reading back through the older posts, to get info on excom meetings.

I would be willing to bet that hydrogen and I had same/similar ppl interviewing us, I had basically the same exact interview questions. I've talked to several ppl who have been on the excoms in the past. I gathered two things. First, not all of their questions are answerable. The ethical questions are supposed to be beyond your scope of understanding, and are aimed at seeing how you reason and combat difficult situations etc. Second, if they grill you, it's generally a good thing. It shows that they are really quite interested in you.

It was funny though, everyone else during the day of my interview came out of the interview rooms all smiles, saying how it was not too bad. Of course, when I got done with my ass end of the day 4pm, interview spot, I felt like I got run over by a freight train.

Quick question for ppl who either are in UW now, or otherwise have some insight into this. What is testing like at UW? Computer based? Weekly tests? Particular day of the week? General time length of thus test, couple of hours long, or brief?

Thanks!

I interviewed on the same day as you (19th) and I feel the same way! Everyone came out smiling, which makes me nervous. I don't feel like the interview went badly, but I do feel like the questions were difficult and they grilled me on healthcare policy, which is always fun. I definitely didn't come out as happy as some people.

I'm also feeling the same way! I interviewed back in October and have received several UC emails since then. Its definitely been a very long wait. Does anyone know if the Excom will consider your application in subsequent meetings (after they discuss it the first time) or will you have to wait until the final meetings in March to be considered again?

In the focus group sessions, they said they would review your application continually throughout the admissions process, but they won't get to everyone's at every meeting. So ideally you will hear back before March, but who knows!

Ha, no way! There were some great ppl at our interview. Guy from westpoint, girl at Tulane who had a million stories to tell. Ya, for the healthcare stuff I was basically like, "I can't tell you the exact correct answer, but here is what I think. When I am in medical school I could probably give you a much better answer."

Well, let's just hope that we were awesome candidates, and that's why our interviews were difficult

btw, you hear anything yet?

Nope, nothing yet. I'm sure we'll hear when the Excom meeting happens...people will start posting right away when they hear. Today marks three weeks though...hopefully it happens soon! But yeah, everyone at our interview was really outgoing and well spoken so I'm not sure how they are going to eliminate 2/3rds of the group through interviews. I wonder if we had the same interviewers...

I've heard a lot of people on this thread talk about getting grilled on health policy? Would anyone be willing to share what they mean by this? As in, are specific questions about our health policy brought up? Comparisons to other policies? Positive/negatives?

Any input would be much appreciated!

Your interviewer will probably ask what you think is a problem in the health industry and what you think some possible solutions may be. It's advisable to illustrate the problem with an anecdote and present the solution with a real-life example as well.

OOS applicant - Rejected pre-interview

I'm sorry, hopefully another school will pull through for you, it's still early!

Have any accepted applicants received a criminal background check request from Certiphi yet? Also, has anyone received acceptance information via snail mail?
