Haha, it's a good question. I'm none of those. I try to be optimistic about everything on SDN in general to combat the rampant cynicism, which probably attributes to a lot of that enthusiasm.

For me personally, I like Brown pretty well. It had by far the best atmosphere of everywhere I visited, which is pretty important to me, and the Match List for me demonstrates going here wouldn't put me at any disadvantage compared to going to the stereotypical "top 10" research schools. I could rant on, but regardless, the application period isn't over yet, so I continue collecting information to make a decision 🙂

Hahaha. I think most of us are content to let you ask the questions while we sit back and reap the answers. I hope you get off the waitlist. You're obviously very committed to going here. As am I so maybe we'll see each other next year. You ask good questions though. With Dean Wing leaving, I'm nervous as well. There are clear policies that Dean Wing advocated over the years that I agree with wholeheartedly. There is usually a lot of consistency across administration, but each Dean has his or her own policy preference. Dean Wing is an infectious disease specialist with a love for primary care and global health (instant respect and adoration!). It's tough to see him leave and not know who will replace him.

🙂 I hope you hear good news soon!

I agree on the Dean Wing aspect. The last big dean change I heard of resulted in the reinstatement of AOA despite widespread student protest (according to Brown's campus newspaper) by a dean who had been at Brown for less time than the PLME-track med students who suddenly had AOA to compete for.

I'm hesitant with regards to the idea of competition. Yeah, H/P/F is better than ABCDF, but that and more particularly ranking + AOA tends to = competition. So many schools (including top schools) have moved to all pass-fail and don't seem to have any problem, so I've wondered about Brown putting its money where its mouth is, so to speak, with regard to potential competition-inducing factors.

(Granted, my understanding is that honors isn't limited to a percent of the class, so I could see it justifiably being used to encourage people to learn things thoroughly the first time around instead of "just passing" - and that's something I could see myself liking. I'll have to see how I feel about things after second look. No place is perfect after all 🙂 )

I know that the next set of admissions decisions are being released on March 1st. Does anybody know what day the committee will be meeting to make those decisions?

So, I'm on the waitlist. Does anyone have any advice on what I could do now to present a strong case come May?

Dean Wing is a fantastic human being and a great leader. He really has helped advance our medical school to its current standing.
While I was on the residency interview trail I noticed that a lot of students were concerned that a department was about to undergo a change in chairman. When I looked at all the different departments that had recent replacements of chairman (usually due to retirment of the former chair) I found that the departments were continuing to flourish and in some cases do even better than before. I think that some parallels can be drawn in the replacement of our dean as well. Dean Wing did some amazing things for Brown, but he did replace someone else and I am sure people were concerned about that replacement as well. I don't think that there is anything to be worried about AT ALL!!! The people who get to these leadership positions are very driven and accomplished. I only see our school moving up in the world🙂

The AOA thing is a bit more iffy. Many students wanted to keep things the way they are and many students wanted AOA inductions to be made before the residency Match. If you are applying for a competitive specialty then having AOA on your record can be VERY helpful. Sometimes not having AOA and applying to Plastics/ENT/Ortho/Optho, for whatever reason, can hurt your application. So it is a mixed bag (i.e. good if you are going into something competitive but not so good if you are doing something else).

March 1st needs to get here fast! I'm losing my mind over the wait!

H/P/F and AOA are definitely good things. For the preclinical years H/P/F is basically a joke, as AMS students don't really seem to care, theoretically the entire class could get honors (above a 90 on the test) and, as I had multiple program directors tell me, residencies don't really care about preclinical grades because they can use Step 1 to tell them all they need to know about how well you learned the material (plus classroom /= clinic). It's still in place because it can't hurt you, but in some limited cases it can help you. The example they give is if you have a bad showing on Step 1 but are really interested in Neurology, your Dean's letter can mention that although your Step 1 wasn't optimal you did honor the Neuro block so you definitely knew that info well.

In the clinical years you definitely want to go to a school that gives something other than P/F because you need to give program directors enough information to assess you accurately. It is *extremely* important in competitive fields that you honor the relevant rotations, and schools that don't have anything other than P/F get treated in variable (and frankly in some cases unfair) ways that usually result in the PD choosing a different aspect of your application to use as a surrogate (which may or not be something you'd like them to evaluate you on, aka how many times does your "work ethic" get mentioned in your written evals). Even noncompetitive fields use those (Harvard programs pretty much don't interview you for IM if you didn't honor your medicine clerkship), and if you look nationally there are only a handful of schools that truly use a P/F for the clinical years.

Brown doesn't rank. Period. We don't do quartiles, 'special adjectives' (aka this student is Exceptional vs Excellent vs Good vs Qualified), or anything else. There is nothing to tell anyone where you stand in the class.

AOA is not really a big thing here because it doesn't come out until after residency interviews are basically done (we found out 3 weeks ago). If you get it you can update programs for a late boost. If you don't, programs have pretty much already made up their mind anyway. I've never heard of it being controversial besides a few students who wanted to move up the deadline so it's before residency apps go in (the deadline stayed the same).

Re: AOA

Just to clarify for other people that might not be familiar with what we're talking about, Dean Wing if I remember correctly felt that AOA was unnecessary, creates competition, and didn't embrace the "Brown Spirit," though I can't find the news article where I read that so I might be mistaken. Dean of Medicine and Biological Sciences Eli Adashi reactivated AOA. It looks like he arrived at Brown in 2004, reactivated AOA in 2006, and then stepped down from Dean in 2008, and so he made a potentially major change against student opinion and yet was Dean for less time than it takes PLMEs to get their undergrad degree. That sort of action was what concerned me about turnover in general.

http://www.browndailyherald.com/2006/03/03/possible-med-school-honors-society-sparks-student-outcry/

For me personally, it seems like AOA is great for the people who get it, hurts substantially the people in the top 25% who don't make the AOA cutoff, and is irrelevant to people not in the so-called top 25%.

Does Brown rank like that? The concern is irrelevant if they don't. (Note - question answered by aloepathic. Thanks!)

Thank you for offering your perspective 🙂 I'm pretty sure it'll turn out for the better - the AOA example just, for me, called to question the influence people can have. There's also the fact that Stanford/Harvard kids don't have AOA at all, and residency directors, realizing their schools don't have AOA, presumably don't penalize them for it. I guess residency apps don't have a checkbox for "my school doesn't have AOA," though...

That's a great point about the uses of H/P/F to counter Step 1 missteps. You've definitely convinced me with regards to clinicals grading. No ranking = awesome - I've been to some "True P/F!" schools that then rank their students into quintiles. Uh, okay.

That sounds like a great way to do AOA - hopefully the residency programs recognize that fact, and people aren't penalized about it. I imagine eventually the "moving it up" will win over somebody (a Dean, for example) and it'll play out that way.

It'll be fun to see, though 🙂 Thank you for all the perspectives! Really cleared up some things for me. I wish second-look was earlier!

9 Days! My mind was lost waiting for the MCATs, now I'm just losing hair. I wonder how many of us SDNers are waiting?

Is that the last announcement day? Good luck everyone 🙂

So, I'm on the waitlist. Does anyone have any advice on what I could do now to present a strong case come May?

PM'd.

Yes, I would greatly appreciate advice as well.

also, I only just now realized that on of my interviewers may not have received my thank you letter I wrote them back in October (sent via my personal email and not through the admissions department). I didn't realize until about 3 weeks ago that my personal email account can get put into the spam filter for some school/private company emails. Is it redundant/not worth it to send another email from my work email (which has never ended up in a spam filter) to the interviewer so far after the interview date?

thanks guys!

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. A letter of interest or intent would definitely be good (if you mean it) or an update letter couldn't hurt, but a thank you at this point is sort of irrelevant.

About to send in my letter of intent! Here is to hoping for some waitlist movement! I've been working on this love letter for a while now trying to get it just right. I also wanted to send in my new grades for the Fall semester, so should I mention the grades in the email and just attach an unofficial transcript? Lastly, what kind of muffin basket should I send - blueberry or chocolate? 🙄

Yes, I would mention the grades in the email and attach the transcript. Go blueberry.

Good luck!

Making me quite crazy too! 3 more days...

Just sent it in! Thanks for the advice. Crossing my fingers! And good luck to everyone hearing back soon

Good luck tomorrow, y'all. Hope we all get some good news.

Accepted -- off of waitlist ahhh

Long time follower but this is my first post... Do you mean you were on the wait list before and just got accepted?? If so, any tips for those of us still on that miserable list? 🙂

At any rate, CONGRATS!

Yep, that's what happened. I've just been emailing them with any updates I've had. So far I think I emailed them 4 times since I got wait listed. I also sent an LOI, so maybe that helped?

Regardless, I just accepted my offer. So excited for the next four years! 🙂

Congratulations you guys! That must be so exciting.

That's really cool that Brown accepts off the waitlist this early. What kinds of things have you been doing? I'm completing a grad program and so haven't had any time for formal volunteering or shadowing.

That's pretty much what I've been doing actually. I shadowed a doc during winter break, I've continued with my volunteer activities, and other extracurriculars. I also emailed my interviewers as well, both after my interview and a few weeks ago, just to follow up on some stuff we talked about during my interview.

Congrats guys! 🙂

Think you'll be going to Brown?

Edit:

Also, this sounds really cool: http://brownmedicinemagazine.org/vi...FJmVudDk0PTQzMyZjbnRwYWdlMTMxNT0xJmlzczk0PTE3

I definitely am 🙂. Anyone know if there is a facebook group yet?

I'm really glad for those that got off the waitlist.

Of course, I'm worried as well. Does Brown continue to take off the waitlist through May? How many typically get off?

That's JUST what I was about to ask. You should start one 🙂 😛

You make one 😛 Idk how to make it look cool and stuff lol.

According to Barbara during my interview day, there should be lots of movement. Also current students that have been posting on here have said the same. I suggest just keep emailing them any updates to your application and hope for the best!

The students there can probably shed better light on it, but I imagine the first chunk of movement will come throughout March and April (as schools finalize their acceptances and people choose to go to other schools - curse you US News and World rankings!). It would depend on when the office sends offers out, and I would guess they do them regularly. This would be followed by a second wave in April, when financial aid offers are finalized and people are bought by other schools, and a third in May after the deadline. After that, a trickle.

According to US News and World, 70~80% of interviewees ultimately get offers, so I would say there's a fair amount of waitlist movement. Hope you hear some good news soon 🙂

Is AMS definitely your #1 (sorry, I don't remember, though I think I asked you that before 😛)? If so, I would write them to that effect. LOIs all up in this hizzouse.

You make one 😛 Idk how to make it look cool and stuff lol.

Haha, I don't want to be the admin and connect my SDN identity to Facebook for all to see 😛. Maybe one of the current med students could make an "official" one for us. :luck:

Edit: Oooookay, I'll make one. Give me a minute 🙂 I tried to make it nice looking, but have no idea about the legality of the logo and all that. I can strip it and make it boring if that's better. There's no barrier, and if you don't say anything on SDN there shouldn't be a way to link you to it. Acceptees, waitlisters, fans, nemeses, all feel free to "like" it and join. 🙂

Let me know how this works: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Alpert-Medical-School-Class-of-2017/497693340290604

It is. I'm an RI native, have family here etc.

But I wouldn't want to make promises that I might not be able to keep. I still have to consider finances etc. If all else was equal, I would attend Brown without a second thought. Now, how to explain that with tact in a letter...

I edited my previous posts (you lurkers, you), so here's the link:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Alpert-Medical-School-Class-of-2017/497693340290604

Actually, a friend of mine started it up. I'm not good at the Facebook thing. But it seems to work pretty ok.

Free for everybody with any connection to the class of 2017. Waitlist, acceptees, fans, nemeses, etc.

Edit: If I'm correct, liking the page doesn't allow others to see that you've liked the page. You can test that out for yourself if you like, but can feel secure random people can't show up and see a list of all the people who like the page. That way you can lurk if you like, or introduce yourself to the group, etc. Privacy and all that jazz. Personally, I'd love to see it turn into a discussion group or something.

Edit #2: Of course a group would let us see each other and talk more directly with each other, so that might be more ideal. S'up to you all 🙂

I agree, I think a group would be more social. I thought there was one already made according to this convo (it was mentioned in one of the previous pages).

Yeah, there's one but you need a brown.edu email to gain access. It's a PLME group for now.

If someone can find a previous group, that would be helpful (I didn't find it with a search on Facebook, so there's that). Things can be freely discussed on the page just as much as in a group, the only difference is that in the group everyone can see and stalk everyone else :naughty:

I think a group would be best if it was made by a current student there. If there's enough interest, though, I or someone else here can make one. Right now there's only like 4 people following the page, so not exactly a ton of interest 😛

It'd probably be better to not have a group totally separate from the PLMEs. Someone could contact them? I don't have the group contact info.

I'm partial to the page as an update tool regarding Brown and our (assuming we all ultimately matriculate there) class (it's a cleaner interface for people looking at the class, and parents, etc., could follow it), but a group would be better for limited nonglobal discussion within the class.

Yup, I agree with the group.

Side note: has anyone that has been accepted or waitlisted been contacted by certiphi, or are we supposed to contact them in regards to the background check?

I got an email from them awhile back. At some point you'll be contacted and asked for info.

Well, hopefully a PLME will check this thread someday 😛 or one of the med students.

If people want to make a separate group, I can link to it from the page. I think a group would be great, but most people won't know for sure they're going to AMS until 5/15 or later. Until then, I'll keep updating the page?

As an aside: anybody have any advice for finding solid housing in the Providence area? There were some sweet setups in previous year threads, wondering if there's anything like that this year.

Funnily enough I was just wondering about our incoming classmates and came over here to see if y'all had started a group. We do have one, but it's within the brown network and I don't know when you get emails.

So umm, get crackin'.

- a PLME who is way too embarrassed to be on SDN to ever reveal his or her identity

Well, feel free to join the page! We can always use both. Parents, etc., can get news from the page and all that jazz.

I guess that also gives us a greenlight to start a facebook group, if someone wants to do that :|... or just use the page for now. Waiting is not my strong suit 😛

the more I read about this school, the more excited I get.

anyways...carry on 😀
