...now I want that group to start to meet all of you 😛

Yup me too. On a side note, I started working on my financial aid stuff today. Not much time left if the FinAid office has to receive all processed information by the 1st!

As an aside: anybody have any advice for finding solid housing in the Providence area? There were some sweet setups in previous year threads, wondering if there's anything like that this year.

Similarly, I'm guessing that the most common leases are June to June. Do 1st years typically move in June to Providence, or are there a sufficient number of openings in August, such that I could move there at the start of August?

I've been giving some serious thought to moving in June (assuming my plans don't change when loan packages roll out), but I have no idea what I'd do for the two months. I wouldn't have the money to take classes or anything.

Hey Guys!

Im a California resident. Hispanic URM with avg stats. 3.7GPA, 30MCAT.
I was wondering more or less how OOS friendly the school is to accept applicant. Are the OOS acceptances usually neighboring states or people with strong state ties?
Like i mentioned, im from CA, with ZERO state ties. trying to compile my list of schools for the 2013-2014 cycle. Sounds like an awesome university I would love to apply, but also don't want to waste money if I have a very slim chance because of my OOS status.

Thank you for your help and Honesty. Congrats to everyone who got in here!

Just curious...did you get off the waitlist? I wasn't sure if you were accepted here or not. If so congrats.

The what-are-your-chances thread is a better place for these, but:

AMS doesn't really do the IS vs. OOS thing. Based on the list of students, and discounting PLMEs, there may be some slight regional bias, but I think that reflects the applicant pool more than a focus on people from the region. A current student here may be able to offer more info there.

I would recommend two things: 1) get the MSAR, or a subscription to USNWR, which will give you some idea what the numbers are for in-state students. Use it to compile a list of schools in your range. 2) Consider retaking the MCAT. A 30 is less than competitive, and you have more than enough time to retake before June.

Just curious...did you get off the waitlist? I wasn't sure if you were accepted here or not. If so congrats.

Thank you! I rarely talk about my status in any threads, so I'm not sure where people heard I was waitlisted or not and all that. It's kindof like my gender, I guess. 😛

I really do hope everyone gets the answers they're looking for! From what I understand there's a fair amount of movement come May.

Excellent advice Bearstronaut. However, I have to disagree with retaking the MCAT. A 30 is a solid score and his/her GPA is very good for a standard applicant let alone a URM. Based on my own experience Brown seems to take a very holistic approach when reviewing applications. During my interview Barbara mentioned that although stats do play a role in the admissions process, Brown loves students with unique experiences and good stories. They also seem to like applicants who take some time off before med school (my interview day was full of gap year applicants).

Btw congrats on your acceptance Bearstronaunt! Hopefully I'll be joining you in the fall.

Thanks! I agree with you, but I try to make a point of not treating ORM and URM students differently. A 30 isn't a bad score by any means, and yes with URM could lead to an acceptance even at AMS, but there's enough time (theoretically, I don't know 1cor1311's schedule) to improve it, which could lead to a very different overall application season.

Looking at it objectively, yes, Brown does a holistic review. It is also perhaps the most selective school in the country, with a non-waitlist non-PLME outright acceptance rate of 0.7-1%. Even when that rate is boosted by including the PLMEs and the waitlist movement, it is still (according to USNWR) the 4th most selective school out there, and it doesn't make any sense to include the PLMEs because you're not competing for their seats. If you remove them from the pool, and assume they make up roughly half the class, AMS's overall acceptance rate for AMCAS applicants is about 1.75%. That would make it more competitive than Mayo (1.9%)

http://www.usnews.com/education/bes...ical-schools-with-the-lowest-acceptance-rates

Of course, these numbers don't address average applicant competitiveness - the second "most competitive" school is George Washington, which over 1/4th of the total applicant pool applies to, so all those biases (selection, whatever) likely apply.

Now, based on past years, if you get an interview, your chances seem pretty good of ultimately getting an acceptance, as the biggest applicant reduction appears to occur pre-interview.

I don't say this to be discouraging, but just to avoid any unrealistic expectations. Hopefully we'll all see eachother this fall 🙂

For people who missed it previously, this is the current page for the class of 2017 on Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Warr...rown-University-Class-of-2017/497693340290604

The page is for everyone - acceptees, waitlisters, fans, parents, etc. I envision it as a tool the class can use to keep the world up on future CO2017 progress.

I heard from a friend of a friend a group should be coming soon 🙂 though I don't know when or who is making it. Maybe the admissions office?

Can anyone offer up honestly what the area is like from experience or interviews. Im from the west coast, if anyone can provide insight about what the community, campus environment and city is like it would be much appreciated! thanks!

Anyone know the exact schedule of second look? I'm asking because I don't know if I should buy a ticket for Thursday night or Friday morning (and when to leave as well).

Just got a call from Barbara!! ACCEPTED off the waitlist!!! 😀😀😀

Congrats!!

I saw your post and then 2 minutes later I see I have 2 missed calls with an RI area code. Mini heart attack false alarm..wrong number. REALLY? I mean really.... lol

Congrats! I'm withdrawing my WL spot, got into another school earlier this week. Less competition for the spots for you guys!

Very disappointing elevator ride back from lunch.. Trying to see the humor in it haha

Congrats!!! Did you send in a letter of intent or updates?

Thanks!! Yes, I sent a letter of intent last month.

Congrats! 😀 Did you join the facebook page? 😛

Yes i did 😀

Yay! Congrats!! 😀😀😀

Thanks Remedies! Will you be joining us in August?

Hey all! For any current students, do you how many (or if any) first/second years live outside providence? I possibly have a house in Riverside (15 min drive from Brown) and I was wondering if I would be missing out on anything socially or otherwise by not living in the Wickenden/ Wayland square area. Thanks!

Usually it is about 5-10 students or so per class. Limits on social gathering are usually due to family issues more than anything else. I have a family so didn't have as big a social life as some of the other students. But, for the most part it shouldn't be an issue.

So, can anyone comment on what the current status of AOA selection is here?

DAT MATCH LIST!

damn I really really really wanna get in off the wait-list. my state's only school and such a chill place,

plus the opportunity to meet Bearstronaut (who I am still not convinced actually exists and could just be an amalgamation of several people's efforts). what is not to love about this school.

I feel ya. In stater as well, and the Bearstronaut thing too.

Haha, thanks guys. Match day was absolutely incredible and I think I can speak for pretty much everyone in the class when I say we were blown away by how fortunate we were with our matches.

Story time:
When I came here four years ago I had a physician family friend who's a program director in the Midwest review four years of match lists for Brown and two other schools I was considering (which were USNWR top 10 so 'better' in some people's books) and he picked Brown's as the best for 3/4. In the four years since, things have only gotten better 😍

This year Brown sent out invitations for AOA on 2/5, which was too late for early match specialties (Urology and Ophthalmology) but right before the rank lists were due for the regular match. Next year I believe they are switching things around a bit so it comes out a little earlier in fourth year (in time to be useful for residency applications). I heard that some of the preclinical students were getting a little freaked out by this, but as far as I can tell the clinical students don't seem to have gotten too hot and bothered.

Flame starter:
Everything seems more important when lectures, small groups, and block exams are all you have to concentrate on

Interesting. And,what percent of students get AOA, and how is it determined? I'd rather not worry about any one individual thing about med school, but it seems some residency directors care about this.

We are the Bearstronaut, resistance is futile? 😛
And agreed, this place is awesome 🙂

AOA's limited to 1/6th of any class, so probably 20 people or less.

Also curious how it's determined, though I imagine it's the usual: preclinical honors, step 1 scores, and clerkship scores, with maybe an additional bump for people who are particularly helpful or show admirable traits.

just double checking, everyone (waitlist and accepted students) get the financial aid emails right? I always get thrown off about how it says I will receive my award in "early may."

don't think I can receive an award until I have been accepted right?

yeah I got it.

right, no award until accepted. However, they have you send in all info so that if (when!) you do get accepted, they will then already have your material on file and can review it at that time, instead of then waiting for you send it before reviewing.

quick question:

is there such a thing as sending to many letters to an admissions committee (or Dean Fuller)?

Most definitely, especially if you have nothing in particular to say. The waitlist for the most part won't churn until May.

I'd write one detailed letter now, then in late April or pre-May 15th, if you're not off the waitlist, write a letter of intent. Annoying them won't help you.

Just curious, how many of you considered how PBK worked at the colleges you were considering attending?

For us waitlisters, if we call would they give us any indication of our chances? Do they accept more WL when accepted people withdraw in a 1:1 ratio? Brown is still absolutely my top choice but my fiancé needs to be looking for jobs at wherever we are going to be next year which makes this wait list thing even tougher. C'mon Brown!!!

Probably not.

In the long run, yes. Earlier in this thread it was said they accept 100~120 for their class of 50~60 students. Most movement is in May.

Brown is still absolutely my top choice but my fiancé needs to be looking for jobs at wherever we are going to be next year which makes this wait list thing even tougher.

Write a letter of intent saying you'll 100% matriculate here and will withdraw everywhere else.

C'mon Brown!!!
