II today!

Anyone have tips on the best way to get to/from Dartmouth? Other than Lebanon, which doesn't seem to offer many flights, which airport is most convenient? What's the earliest it would be reasonable to book a flight out?

Thanks!

hey neurophage..im a current dartmouth student (undergrad), and what i do is take the Dartmouth Coach (a bus service) from Logan Airport in Boston, MA...it's the easiest way, other than Lebanon.

Thanks Nandrolone! I'll look into that.

Hey, I looked into the costs/benefits of flying into Logan versus Lebanon versus Burlington versus Manchester, and I pretty much concluded that flying into Lebanon was worth the extra price. If you factor in the bus/train costs and extra time spent traveling I 'd rather just pay a little more for the convenience of flying to Lebanon. That being said, flying into Lebanon seems to include a lot of layover time, and flying to Logan is pretty cheap.

Submitted secondary July 18th.

Hmm, thanks for the info. The problem with Lebanon for me is lack of departing flights - I wouldn't be able to fly out on the night of my interview, and thus would have to either request alternate dates or change another interview.

Same exact issue for me. I have to stay 2 nights because of this. Will you even be able to make it back to Boston on the same night to fly back? I couldn't find flights late enough to take a bus or train from Hanover to Boston after the interview so I just said screw it and will stay 2 nights.

So is the "please share something" question on the secondary optional? It seems like the optional essay found on other secondaries but the way it's worded makes it sound like it's not.

Ahhhh II!! OOS complete 8/3

I wonder if figuring out transportation will be harder than the actual interviews ...

Jealous! Congrats!

But you're probably right, getting there is going to be an interested endeavor. Hope I have that problem 😉

i am doing my undergrad there currently...beautiful school, tight knit community, plenty of outdoor activities

Another current Dartmouth student here! Interviewing 9/20
Just thought I'd share the Big Green love 😀

Would a current Dartmouth student mind sharing what they like the most about Dartmouth? Why did you pick Dartmouth over other schools? Thanks

Hey, I'm applying there as well and live in New Hampshire. My application was complete on 8/25.

If anyone needs help getting there, let me know!

I live about 1 hour 45 minutes south of Dartmouth. If you want to take a flight into Boston Logan Airport you can take the train that goes to a station near my house. If you pay for gas and your interview time does not interfere with my classes or anything, I can let you spend the night / will give you a ride up there! I know logistics can be tough sometimes so I'm willing to help out. If I can't personally take you I can probably let you drive my car.

^ is this a joke?

I'd like to think just a really nice guy/gal. Transportation to and from interviews is costing $$$ and mucho dolor de cabeza and I'd like to believe this good Samaritan just wants to help 🙂

^ is this a joke?

I'm pretty serious. If the person pays for gas why would I turn down the chance to hang out at Dartmouth some more. I love that campus.

That and I would hope someone in the future would do something similar in some other state. We have to stick together to help lower the costs of applying to and interviewing at medical schools!

^^ samy, you are too nice... so nice that u're welcome to stay with me at Dartmouth.
I live on campus, 5 min walk from where they hold interviews.

Does anyone know if it's a good idea to send update letters to Dartmouth? My clinical exposure is low so I've been shadowing a lot recently...I was debating sending an update to inform schools... not sure about it so wanted some opinions. i was complete 7/31 and haven't gotten an interview.

i know some schools strictly say to not send update letters ...and I couldn't remember what Dartmouth's position was...also sorry if this has been discussed already! I've gone through the thread before but am not sure if I missed a few posts in the middle

Oh, that sounds great! I'll let you know if I get an invite 🙂

For something like that I probably would not send an update letter. You could always bring it up in the interview. If you think it is a weak point, it probably will show and they might ask you about it? If you do decided to send an update letter do it via snail mail? That's how I sent my paper once it was published. It may end up in circulation but that is worst case scenario lol!

thanks for the reply...you make some good points...i think because i have so little clinical exposure...what i'm seeing and doing right now seems like such a huge deal lol when its like not that impt through the lens of a adcom haha...

why do you suggest snail mail btw? did you read that somewhere or just ur preference? i'm abroad right now so snail mail wud b complicated...

Well my professor, a graduate from DMS told me to send it through snail mail. But that was a publication that was a few pages. For an update an email could be sufficient I think.

I tried hard to make this work and just couldn't. Ended up rearranging a bunch of other things so I could stay 2 nights.

Do any of you locals have lodging recommendations? Everything seems either astronomically expensive or very barebones. I just want to make sure I'll be able to eat and get myself to/from my interview. 😛

Does Dartmouth have a student hosting program?

They do have student hosting but you can only rely on that for one night. Hotels in Hanover are expensive. There are a few cheaper ones in Lebanon which is convenient since that is where I am flying out of. I would say use your student night the night before (that way you can get the inside scoop about the school) and the hotel for the second night. Hopefully it will work for me.

Thanks for the info! Are you relying on taxis? Or did you find an affordable hotel with shuttle service?

Ask your host if you can stay two nights or just email a second host.

I am renting a car because I am getting in half a day early so I thought it would be nice to check out the fun and exciting things to do in Hanover (haha). I am staying at the Baymont Inn in Lebanon my second night there. Doesn't look too horrible.

Good thought on the car rental - seems that's not too expensive in NH, and the area is beautiful enough that I'd like to explore.

Interviewed here today with about 25 people total. Trying hard not to like this place so it'll be easier if I get rejected. Medical center and surrounding area are beautiful. School itself isn't as nice as it could be, but the overall campus is absolutely beautiful.

Just wondering for my own knowledge, what was it about the school that you didn't like?

I just said that the school wasn't as nice as it could be referring to the medical school specifically. The interior just seemed kind of older and dark/shadowy in comparison to the nicer, naturally lit medical center. Overall the entire campus and surrounding area are awesome.

This was an awesome way to start the interview season. I'm not going to stop crossing my fingers until I hear a yay or nay on acceptance.

For the people that have interviewed(or anyone that knows), how are they? Open file, closed file, open file without numbers?

I watched as my PhD interviewer scrolled through my entire AMCAS app on his computer during my interview, so I'm pretty sure the interviews are open-everything.

Both of mine were open, but after reading last year's thread it seems that it is the choice of each individual interviewer.

I was just trying to figure out this interview. As noted in earlier posts Dartmouth is not the easiest campus to get to. I could get a nonstop flight after at 4:20 at Lebanon, but I saw there is a brief tour starting at 3:30. Do you think they would be open to allowing me to forgo the tour? It is literally the only way out of Hanover without spending $900 or so dollars.

If you look at the interview confirmation sheet, it says the 3:30 tour is optional. On the other hand, you'd really have to bust out of there as soon as you're done to catch the 4:20 flight. Gl!

You'll be fine. Skip the Hanover campus tour (hospital tour in AM). Call or email admissions to say you have a flight that you need to catch and they should be able to get you done with your interviews by 2:30. Lebanon airport is 15 minutes from campus and if it takes you longer than 10 minutes to get through security I'd be shocked.

Wow just got an Interview Invite here. First of the season and extremely excited. My stats are kinda low but I'm amazed I got it this far.

Congrats...would you mind sharing when you were complete?

Does this school look favorably on thank you letters?

For the people that have interviewed here, can you give a breakdown of the days schedule so other can know what to expect. Any other info would be appreciated. Is there anyone else interviewing on the 25th?

This is the official schedule they give you when you arrive:

8:30-9:00AM = Check in time

9:00AM-10:30AM = Group information session (admissions and financial aid)

10:30AM = break

10:45-11:00AM = Shuttle to medical center

11:00-11:45AM = Student led tour of DHMC by a fresh 3rd year who knows about as much of the hospital as you

11:45AM = lunch

Remainder of day = 2 interviews at various times, waiting around making small talk with your fellow interviewees, and finally, an optional tour of the medical school at 3:30PM.

I'll be there next week. Hope everyone who's gone so far has had a good time!
