So I have a question for a current student there:

Being associated with a liberal-arts school (Dartmouth) does that philosophy of education bleed over at all to the medical school? I.E. does the Geisel School of Medicine offer/recommend their students take classes in the humanities/art/literature/philosophy more compared to other schools?
 
II 12/18/12. Complete 10/9/12. Didn't see this one coming. Excited to check out Dartmouth!

They definitely played that up during the interview day last year, but my school (a stand-alone medical school) also has plenty of these types of elective offerings for those who are interested. Dartmouth probably encourages it more, though. That was the feel I got, anyhow.
 
Has anyone else who interviewed in Nov heard back (accept, reject, or WL)? I'm getting quite anxious! I know how their ranking system works but I REALLY want to go here!!

i know exactly how you feel... i interviewed recently and guess i have a lot of waiting to do aaaah it was SO awesome!!! fingers crossed for us both!

(also it was SO crazy how ridiculously nice every single person was!! i could definitely get used to that haha)

Do people really wait months on end without hearing back??

I interviewed recently as well and I want to attend this school sooooo baaadddd!!!!!

Haha, I hear ya both!! And yes they were sooo NICEEE especially the admission office staff. I'm already dreaming of spending my weekends in Dartmouth log cabins 😀

It's been 3 months since my interview without hearing anything
 
I interviewed 2 months ago and haven't heard back. They reassured us that when you hear back has no relationship with what the news will be.
 
I know its killing me too! I'm a lower stat person that also wrote a letter of intent since I fell in love with the school. Hopefully I'll hear some good news before March ish lol.

So who checks their email every morning hoping for good news or another school with an interview invite lol

My application was completed on 9/27. No response yet. Is it reasonable to contact Admissions with a letter of intent? Should I wait for an interview request (if I'm so fortunate) before sending a letter of intent?

I don't see why not. From what the dean said on interview day, it sounds like they actively kick around applications in the applicant pool. Sending in a LOI will likely help for the next time someone looks at your application.
 
I find that if you have very strong reasons for liking Dartmouth and they are truly convincing, then by all means include it as a letter. It will be reviewed, and if your reasons are strong enough, they will be very favorably looked upon.

Do you mean submitting an LOI before receiving an interview invite? I thought that wasn't taken seriously because you haven't been formally introduced to the school etc

Yeah, before an II. I don't know how much it will help, but it can't hurt. There's plenty of information on their website to make you interested. I would send one, there's always the possibility that it could help.
 
Interview invite! I'm so excited 😀

Complete in early August.
 
Accepted this morning!!!!!! Sooo excited! Was feeling down yesterday because I received a rejection from another school but this makes up for it!!
 
got accepted yesterday !!! so excited. interviewed nov 6.
 
Does anyone know if it is appropriate to fax the signed acceptance form to the admissions office, or should I just mail it? I'd call, but they're closed until after New Year's.

does anyone have a good idea of the admittance procedure. i know about the ranking, etc. Their viewbook says most will not hear back before January 1st so do you guys think that means that very few acceptances go out each week and within the upcoming weeks they are going to release a large amount of decisions? thanks

welp, at least some of us after the new year will at least hear some news (accept, waitlist, or rejection).

I'm guessing they're one of those schools that want to wait until they've seen everybody before giving the majority of offers. The dean did say that they reject/waitlist more often than they accept.

I meant around this time as opposed to the predicted wave of acceptances that comes later on in the cycle. I was responding to the post talking about that wave. I did not mean the cycle overall, I thought that would've been obvious.
 
I'm thinking of staying in a cheap motel a few miles from Dartmouth. Does anybody know what the taxi service is like in the Hanover/Lebanon area? Are the taxis generally reliable, and/or available at all hours of the day? Just wanted to check to make sure, since I've never tried using the taxi service in a rural area..

I think that the taxis are fairly reliable; I have a few friends who have used them to get to/from West Leb. You might also want to check if you're near any of the Advance Transit routes.

I stayed in West Lebanon when I interviewed at Dartmouth and relied on taxi services to get from the transportation center to my hotel and from my hotel to Dartmouth. I used Big Yellow Taxi and P&P's Twin State Taxi. Both trips cost $20. They worked, but I would definitely call ahead of time and schedule your taxi, especially the trip to the campus on the morning of your interview.

Big Yellow Taxi sent their driver to the wrong place, and I had to call them 30 minutes later to ask about my taxi. P&P Taxi seemed to be a home taxi business by an older woman that isn't in much of a hurry to get anywhere.

I had a feeling the taxis might be something like this in a rural area ... McNCheese, that sounds miserable - I could not imagine having a taxi 30 minutes late (and lost!) on the morning of my interview.

Why is Geisel considered "non-rolling" (although technically rolling) by some SDNers?

And why do others disagree with the "non-rolling" designation?

Also, don't worry about conversational leadership. I was confused at first but realized on interview day, no one knows what it means. It's a vision the Dean has, but that doesn't spill over into admissions.

Is this true? Dartmouth wrote portions of the ACA?

Sorry for the ignorance, but what other things make Dartmouth stand out?

Do they focus on helping the underserved? I looked around their website and it didn't seem like they are focused on that.

Haha. No one IDs. Its a good idea to always have ID on you though.

I mean more from the perspective of the admissions committee having a picture of me for my file. Sorry, my original wording was vague.

Nope, no one at the interview takes or asks for a photo. Admissions should have a photo of you on file from your secondary if I'm not mistaken.
 
If one interviewed September / early october does mean the best one can hope for is a waitlist or is this suppose to be a mass amounts of decisions in January? i know there site says that you will probably not hear back until Jan but it seems quite a few people have been accepted for such a small school. thanks.

I interviewed in late October. I was told by multiple students that when we hear back is also a matter of when our interviewers submitted their reviews. Basically don't infer much from if you have heard back or not.

True, but I would say the creme de la creme only makes up a small percentage of the actual class. From what Andy said, they fear over-accepting. So they give out acceptances very slowly. Eventually, the bulk of the class will be accepted in the coming weeks.

I would imagine we will start hearing back a little while after the last interviews. Are interviews over for this season yet?

Wish I knew. Would love to hear some good news from here. Hopefully we get some kind of decision in the coming weeks.

i can walk over and ask...ill do that tomorrow (im a dartmouth undergrad)
but yeah, hopefully the bulk will hear somewhat soon.
