for those who have interviewed: how would you interpret a faculty interview that only lasted 15 minutes, you weren't asked if you had any questions at the end, but the interviewer seemed to sum you up accurately at the end with what you were about, etc?

Yea, I received it the "reply requested" status afternoon, guessing its essentially a small pool...

I think they have you on a short list for possible IIs if you got this email. I applied last year to this school and was on "re-review" from September till about March when I was rejected, yet I never received this email. I think by that deadline they will have weeded out the people they don't want and are preparing a contingency plan in case too many people reject their offers. The last bit is simply the opinion I've developed from my experience.

How long are you guys gonna write? I'm thinking of writing just a paragraph cuz I have nothing new to say hahahaha

Got this from GW this afternoon:

Dear MsPlasmodesmata:

Thank you for your sincere interest in The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. At this time, our interview season is beginning to come to a close for the 2013 admissions cycle. Your file has been placed in a pool of applicants that the Committee may review for remaining interviews.

In order to remain under consideration for any remaining interviews, we request that applicants send an email to [email protected]. Please note that your interest cannot be made known or tracked via telephone.

This email must include (in the body only, no attachments):
1. Your Name
2. AAMC ID #
3. A detailed explanation of your specific interest in our MD program

In addition, you are welcome to include in the email any updated grades for current coursework and any new experiences or activities. This email must be received by the Office of Admissions no later than February 8, 2013 at 5pm EST. After this time, those who have not responded will be withdrawn from consideration.

Although this does not end what we are sure is an unpleasant waiting period for you, your desire to become a physician, your understanding of the requirements, and your perseverance are commendable. In the event that your status changes, we will contact you immediately via email.

We greatly appreciate your patience and truly wish you success in achieving your career goal.

They've sent these e-mails in previous cycles, but usually not for a couple more weeks. I sent an update/LOI about a month ago, and I have nothing new to add. Should I basically just repeat myself?

Same exact situation as me. Got this email today. Sent an update/letter of interest around Christmas. I'm planning on poking around the website and coming up with more things I like about the school, since they said they had added my letter to my file already. I figure they've probably already seen those reasons i like GWU--I need different ones to persuade them. So let the school researching begin! (/continue). 🙂

I'm not gonna write much simply because I already updated them on grades and extensively told them about why I'm interested in GW.
I will remind them that I sent my fall transcript and I'll concisely sum up my points of interest in the school. When they look at my file they'll see my other two LOIs, so there's no point in just repeating myself ad nauseum.

Did they send this email to everyone who hasn't interviewed? If so, that's just disgusting.

Well, not being rejected is a good sign. But I think this is simply an attempt to further cull the herd; a lot of applicants have been accepted somewhere they'd attend over GW, but they haven't officially withdrawn.

I got a bit too optimistic before reading it, since the subject line said "reply requested" I thought it might be an II 🙁

ETA: Good grief, there are 70 people currently reading this thread?!

Yeah, that's exactly what I did too.

Sigh, I didn't even get that email. 🙁

It's possible you've already been marked for an II later this week or something.
I don't wanna get your hopes up since obviously I don't know what goes on the admissions office, but I wouldn't feel defeated just yet. It's not over til it's over.

Hmmm I got this too but I feel like everyone probably got it lol

My response was 4 sentences long...My reasons for wanting to attend GW are stated in my secondary and have not changed. This is what I have done recently. Other than that i did not know what to say and I didnt feel like writing ANOTHER ESSAY. If they reject me, I have other options. Good Luck to everyone

Just sent mine in! I modified a previous letter of intent...I have sent about 7 so I doubt they'll notice. It was about half a page single spaced.

Withdrawn! I had mentally filed this school away as "Rejected" since the hold way back in August, so I was confused when I saw this in my inbox, lol.

Literally just sent an LOI/update last week via email. What do I do?

So I sent LOI on Jan 10th and I basically did update/interest letter for GW. I just got an interview invite today so I feel that if you strongly show them your interest and update them with your recent activities/academic records etc it definitely makes a difference. So please do not lose hope and if this is your first choice def write a letter. Its def worth it and not waste of time at all.

Congrats on your II! Do you mind sharing what dates they're currently scheduling?

Got that email too... I confess it does leave kind of a bad taste in my mouth, but might as play the game. Mine was a few paragraphs, hadn't previously sent a LOI. It is a bit annoying though considering they already asked for this on their secondary.... How many new reasons do they expect us to have?

So my interview is on feb 26th and they also said we can reschedule as well but soon as possible.

Oh, damn. That's later than I expected. There's probably fewer interview days left than I thought for all of us who got that e-mail today.
I really wanna make this LOI detailed like they say, but I'm having trouble resisting the urge to copy and paste bits and pieces of the previous LOIs I've sent them. :annoyed:

Just sent mine in!

I got this email too, but I'm considering myself withdrawn.

I applied to GWU because most of my family is in the area (several have gone there for grad school), and it's been many years since I've lived by them. After interviewing in Texas though, I was highly impressed by the schools here. I just don't think I could justify such an expensive school when I'd get a great education for a fraction of the price.

I understand wanting to be with your boyfriend though. I did the long distance thing for a couple of years with my boyfriend (now my husband), and it's distracting and frustrating...not to mention expensive (plane tickets!).

:luck:

Am I right in feeling like everyone who got this email had sent a letter to the school at some point?

Seems like it! There seems to be a loooot of us that received this letter though, idk how many spots are left but whatever! Worth a shot.

I got it and I haven't sent in anything since my secondary in July. I've got acceptances already, though, so I'm probably just going to withdraw. Best of luck to everyone!

That's how my faculty interview went. The interviewer was a couple minutes late, so we only got about twenty minutes of actual interview time. I didn't get asked if I had any questions.

For my student interview, I didn't get the impression my interviewer liked me/was very impressed with me, but at the end he offered a quick recap of everything I talked about (stuff that he said he was going to pass on to the admissions committee) which I think is a good sign.

Got accepted three weeks later. 😀

Did anyone not get the email?

Haha it is SO expensive! And absolutely distracting. I am really glad to hear your opinion, I wasn't sure if the Texas schools were as wonderful as I think they are compared to OOS schools. The boyfriend is definitely a factor in this decision, but he is not the main one.

I think the three of us had the same interviewer. Mine did the exact same thing, but I was waitlisted. Now that everyone got this last ditch letter for an interview, I'm still trying to figure out when to send in my last LOI: now, a little later, or when I submit my last and final manuscript before starting medical school. I just have no idea when my manuscript will be ready for submission, so I'm leaning toward sending in an LOI fairly soon... I would be ecstatic to attend GWU out of all of my acceptances and interviews thus far.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance and good luck to all of you waiting on admission decisions, interviews, and offers off the waitlist (like me).

decided to send updated info...and I just got a confirmation email just now saying that they appreciate my continued interest and that it will be added to my file.

I don't actually know what I'm talking about, but if it were me....
I'd probably go ahead and send an LOI now since it seems they are narrowing the pool and making some decisions this week. If you haven't already, maybe mention the upcoming submission with the profession of love (statement of your continued interest). Then you can tell them that you'll keep them updated on the process of your manuscript...opening the door for other LOIs.
Updates every few weeks may seem irritating, but from the lore on GWU threads, they welcome many!

I really hope you get in here!!!! I know it's your dream. 🙂

I sent my Update Letter January 13th and by January 17th, I received an interview. Based on what I've read here, your update letters may need a little work. Quality> Quantity. The approach I took was including GWU in my personal feelings and life milestones. I told them about what I did over the break (it was medically relevant). I told them about my family. I only briefly mentioned the school at the end to tell them I was honored to be considered for admissions (this was all on pre-interview review). You should try to make your update stand out. Remember they receive soooo many of these everyday. Why should they care about yours? Hope this helps

Great advice on leaving it open by hinging it on the manuscript's progress, thank you.

Also great advice, I always ensure my updates/LOIs stand out and prefer quality over quantity. I did return to DC post-interview and sit in on some classes and jumped on a cancellation to land an earlier interview, wich are both worth mentioning in the letter. I just need to wait for perhaps one more thing to come in: UT's decision, so I can accurately add that I'd rather be at GWU than all of my other acceptances and interviews.

Again, thanks for the advice and good luck to all. This is truly an amazing, though expensive, school. Cheers!

Honestly, while I think my LOIs have helped me avoid the axe, getting an interview is still a crapshoot. Someone said a few pages back that their GW interviewer said he/she likely didn't get an interview the previous cycle because it's difficult for the adcom to give everyone's app a thorough review.

Several people have posted that they were rejected after sending LOIs, and I'm sure some of them were very well written. Everyone tries to make their letter unique and convey sincere interest. Soooo, while I appreciate everyone encouraging the sending of LOIs and giving LOI advice, it doesn't help much at this point.

I decided to send in the update for the hell of it. I pretty much said my answers in the secondary have not changed, but here are a few more reasons that have I have made up since I have been interviewing at other schools.

+1.

Just sent an response to GWU, confirming my interest with a detailed explanation like they asked. However, it was not until after I sent it that I had my friend read it, and he caught a mistake that I just overlooked. I know this comes off as neurotic, but I hope this doesnt shoot me in the foot.

The mistake, if you are interested: I used a word improperly. I forgot to look up the definition, and was relying on my nebulous impression of the word. I am sure this has probably happened before, though, but gawd dang it.
