Interview invite this morning as well!! =)

33Q, 3.68 GPA from top 3 LAC, OOS, complete 7/17 (LOL)

I think the strengths of my application were really my life experiences, my extracurricular activities, and my research experiences. I had 5 research internships, one publication, and a thesis. One of those internships was at Stanford. Also, I put a lot of time and thought into writing the best secondary essays I could to Stanford's questions.

Especially the question about what kind of field you want to enter in the future (private practice, academic medicine, biotech etc.). Make sure that your experiences SUPPORT your answer. If you just answer private practice, for example, without having any pp shadowing experience at all, everyone will be scratching their heads.

Best of luck!!

Hey guys, does anyone know what the deal is with the reconfirmation 5 days before the interview? Like will we get a reminder, and does it have to be sent exactly 5 days before? Hope I don't forget...

Set an alarm on your phone, mark the calendar, or do something of the sort.

Good luck! :luck:

I got an email about 2 weeks before reminding me to confirm my date. If you reply to this email you are good, that is your reconfirmation(ie it doesn't have to be exactly 5 days out). It had the information on what time my MMI was and other details.

How heavily is the MMI weighed in the grand scheme of things?

I would love to know this as well. Once you get to the interview, are they simply evaluating you/making decisions of acceptance based on your performance at the interview, or is your entire file still being evaluated?

I'm completely going off of my intuition here, but:

I think in the end, an interview makes or breaks your application. MMI has been shown to be quite predictive of future success both in med school and beyond (this is why essentially ALL canadian schools do it). Thus, my guess is your pre-interview "review" is (1) to establish that you are academically capable of handling medicine, (2) you've shown commitment to helping others and sacrificing of yourself to do so, and (3) you know what you're getting yourself into. MMI then assesses your ability to handle new/complex/uncertain situations in a timely manner, under the general auspices of ethical and reasoned judgment/thinking.

As I said, might be completely off here.. but that's my intuitive thinking about the process.

The Dean told us that one of the reasons they switched to MMI in the first place was so that after the interview they could take into account the entire application. In the past apparently they had been relying a lot on the interview report(which has a lot of luck involved) and ignoring the totality of the application. He emphasized that MMI was another aspect like an MCAT or GPA and seemed to imply that doing mediocre wouldn't necessarily keep you out and doing amazing wouldn't necessarily get you in.

Haha, okay thanks guys. I can't imagine how pissed at myself I'd be if I forgot and lost my interview. Good luck to all y'all.

complete 7/17, II 10/20. only interview date available was January 9, 2013!! Pretty far away (hopefully won't disadvantage us late interviewees too much with Stanford's rolling admissions system...)

the great news is that if you are out of state, you have about a 45% chance of getting accepted and if you are in state, you have about a 33% chance of getting accepted, according to my usnwr med school book guide.

That 45% out of state vs 33% in state actually scares me (since I am in state)...does anyone know if they prefer out of state applicants past the interview stage, or if these numbers are just a fluke?

They're still on July applications and earliest interviews are in January? Really? Ouch.

I remember reading that they only offer 15 interview dates, and based on the MMI format, there should be a maximum of 30 slots per day...so maybe they get filled up quickly.

434 interviews.
30 interviews per day.
15 interview sessions.

Numbers check out, captain.

And about a 40% acceptance rate for interviewed applicants is pretty good. It's much better than Columbia who only accepted like 20% of interview applicants.

It's pretty crazy they're already in January dates and they haven't even gotten through July applications, though. *shrug*

There's no guarantee they open all interview days to all people invited. People could be grouped, certain days may have lower quotas to allow others to reschedule, etc.

My US News says about 40% for In-State, not 33%. Also 42% for OOS.

The interesting thing about OOS is that it also includes out of country, right? Stanford is unique in that its classes actually have a sizable number of international students, which is just awesome. I <3 diversity!!

Okay...wait. Maybe they have a lot of international students to pay the full bill. ??? =)

US NEWS says international students are at a 25% acceptance rate(4/16). Are you sure they give international students aid? I met an international on the trail who was pretty mad about Stanford's aid and I thought he said you had to be a US citizen(but I don't know, this is all 2nd hand knowledge).

Yeah, Stanford probably doesn't give significant aid to international students. I remember reading a post by mdeast on SDN in some previous Stanford forums saying that Stanford aid is really, really generous if you're low income to middle class and like nothing if you're in the top bracket...Stanford also "boasts" the second lowest debt upon graduation (something like 65K?), after Mayo of course, but it could be because a lot of families just pay everything out of pocket.

My Stanford II was totally unexpected; I was just accepting rejection and then BAM! BAZINGA (lol). Looking at pictures on the internet...hehehe, long wait until January!

regardless of the breakdown, it's about 180 acceptances from 450 interview offers, so you have roughly a 40% chance of getting in after you interview. IS vs. OOS doesn't matter so much since it's private, it just happens that there's a HUGE # of california applicants already, so many of them will be accepted. not sure if january interviewees are at a disadvantage with rolling admissions, or if they treat every interview day equally and accept the same number (i.e. 12/day x 15 days = 180). so the top 4 people in each group will get accepted if it's distributed as such

Whew, you're right! I just checked too. 40% for In State (not 33%), and 42% for OOS (not 45%).

That sounds a lot more fair. Thanks!

I'm praying everyday to be one of those in state acceptances.

God! you and me both. I'd love an in-state acceptance!

any news from this school lately? completed mid-august but haven't heard anything yet...

Might be a stupid question, but...

Are the MMIs at Stanford closed file or open file? Like, do any of the interviewers know anything about you before or after the interview? Or do they make their evaluations without knowing anything from your application?

Interview really soon and trying to mentally prepare. Thanks!

Closed file. They did have a picture of me though.

I don't know to look at the acceptance thread or just at Tots mdapps...

So I got a question for y'all...

I was complete 7/19 or so, and have had no word at all since. No emails or rejection letters (yet).
Their website is pretty explicit in saying that they will do all information by mail or email, which makes it seem that they are not open to updates and such.

My question is whether or not it is appropriate/reason to give them a call to ask for an update? I don't want to come off as pushy, but it is coming up on 15 weeks.

Please advise! thanks!

It's strange that there seem to be SOOO many people from July and August that haven't heard anything yet, including myself. I sent them an update letter about 1.5 months ago, but it was only until after I submitted that I found on their website "Updates to an application will be accepted only after an applicant has been invited to interview." (http://med.stanford.edu/md/admissions/app_process.html). Assuming that pretty definitely answered your question, as it did mine 🙁

That is a good point. So either they are doing the invites not really chronologically, or ( the more likely answer ) it is a silent reject huh?

I dont think they are doing silent rejections bc they seem to be mailing them out snail mail. I think more likely is silent hold and keeping our apps to see if they want to throw us into the next wave.

agreed - doesn't make sense to send some people rejections and silent rejection others.

Does anyone know if the welcome reception the night before the interview has any role in the admissions process? Are any students or faculty on the Adcom present that day to "observe" or evaluate us (especially since the reception is in the same building as where the interviews are held)? My flight won't be reaching the city until after the reception, but I want to make sure that I won't be at a disadvantage.

No, you're fine. It's just to get to know students. Good luck!

Can anyone comment on the quality of the clinical training and opportunities at Stanford? I recently was accepted to the University of Washington. UW is reputed to be strong in both clinical training and in research but Stanford has had this reputation of having very strong basic science research but lacking in clinical training compared to, for example, UW, UCSF, Harvard...It's an important factor that I'm kind of worried about. For me, it will probably be down to UW vs. Stanford but I'm in an unenviable position because my Stanford interview is next January, so I will be thinking about this decision for the next 3 months. LOL. Please help me out...confirm or allay my concerns? Thanks so much!!! =)

but you didn't have your Stanford interview yet? Don't worry yourself now, make sure you get into Stanford first 🙂

Is anyone interviewing this week worried about how the hurricane will affect flights out of the east coast? I'm hoping stanford will let us reschedule if our flight is canceled?

yeah- i'm really REALLY hoping they'll be nice if i can't make it... two of my flights on tues have been cancelled (my interview's on wed), and there aren't any flights going out of nyc/newark/philly area tonight or monday (airports in nyc are closing down entirely on monday...) oy vey

really crossing my fingers that i'll be able to make it, and that if i can't, stanford will be understanding and allow me to reschedule.

where do students usually live? palo alto is so expensive- i was wondering what the average student pays per month for rent. are cars necessary?

Rejected pre-interview 🙁 Complete 7/15. Letter is dated 10/24. Good luck to all of you still in the running!
