I actually asked my interviewer about that (involved in student affairs) he was fairly adamant about the ability to do residency anywhere. He told me about some recent students matching on the west coast and to some top programs in their field. It's all about how you perform in medical school and how well you do on your boards. If you're a top competitor it shouldn't be a huge issue.

As an M4 at UK, I think I'm in a good spot to answer this question. If either of you all want an answer, let me know and I'll explain it. But it's complicated. In the meanwhile, you should not worry about this because it is not an issue if you play your cards right.

Would you mind just briefly explaining? That would be very much appreciated!

Sure. I'll try to be brief, but still do the topic some degree of justice.

So UK has some great programs (ENT, Gas) some solid programs (Gen Surg, EM) and some not so solid (IM, Neuro). So to start with, some people just want to go to a bigger name in that field. But for most people, the name isn't everything, we want the education. And so, we want to be with educators and people who like their jobs.

I know this is crazy sounding at this point in the game for you all, but the single most important thing in choosing a residency is FIT. Did you fit with the people, does the program fit how you learn, will you be happy here etc. It's not like applying to med school AT ALL. it is a buyers market for the most part, and at interviews they are trying to sell you their program, not you selling yourself like your med school interviews. The tables have turned. They want you.

We UK students for the most part a solid applicants and really nice people (probably more important than the former in matching to a residency). Our board scores are averaged in the 230s, we have great clinical education, and we are well advised and don't make any of the usual mistakes that some applicants make.

So we are solid. We can and do go anywhere. A good buddy of mine last year matched at the Brigham in Plastics. It doesn't get more competitive than that. For the most part, we match at our first choice, some 2nd, and occasionally third choice (for various reasons).

This process is complicated enough that there are books on it. But suffice it to say, you will come out a well educated, solid applicant and if you put the work in, you can go and be anything you want. UKCOM will give you all the opportunity, but at any school, you have to do the work yourself.

Personally, I'm doing EM (which is BTW one of the most competitive fields now, FML). I've gotten interviews all around the country and at top programs. It has been a worry-free process. I'm going to match at a top 1 or 2 choice, of that I literally have no doubt. Comforting.

Most of us match in this region because we like this region. Some stay here because they like the people and the facility. Some go far away because they want to be back in Cali. But really, it's just a spread of what and where they want to be.

Whew-- now I need a nap. Thank god I am a fourth year and have all the time in world!

Has anybody on a pre-interview hold heard anything?

Thank you for your very convincing and comforting explanation Forthegood. I just want the option to go away IF that's what I want down the road. Good luck on your residency applications!

I wanted to make one last inquiry. Is there anyone on the December 15th interview date that would like to switch to my earlier December 11th date? If so feel free to message me. Thx

Just got an invitation by snail mail for orientation on Saturday, January 5th from 9-11:30am with a reception to follow.

Edit: I also just received an email about filling out an application for the Enhancement Scholarship by Friday, December 14th.

Has anyone heard anything yet? I thought they were supposed to meet on Dec 6....

I called Kim Scott just a bit ago and she had mentioned that they start to move things around January 15th. I asked this since I was on Screening Hold. I'm guessing more interviews will be handed out around then?

I've already had my interview so I was just wondering how we find out about our current status....do they email us if we are on hold, etc? Or do we have to call? I'm way too nervous to call haha

You can wait for the email, but don't hesitate to call, the staff are super friendly!

Is it probably a rejection if I haven't heard from them and I interviewed towards the end of November or are they maybe running behind?

Any current students have any info on being placed on a post-interview hold? I read the entire thread from last season and didn't see much. I was told to have any new info sent in by Dec 1st but wasn't given a date as to when the admissions committee would be meeting to review students on hold. Some schools seem to accept many students on hold - but I haven't heard anything about UK and their trends.

They're meeting on Dec. 20th to review the post-interview holds. You can call/e-mail them onb the 21st before noon to find out if there are any changes to your status.

Thank you! Finally, a date! Anyone with experiences being on post-interview hold? Acceptance? Rejection? Better/worse than being waitlisted?

That's interesting to hear. Did the admissions staff say that? Reason I ask is because I interviewed yesterday and someone asked when we'd be reviewed. She said that on the 20th only those who interviewed yesterday and Saturday would be reviewed. No one from previous interviews (?)

Yes. I emailed Kim and she told me about the date.

My Fall semester grades won't be posted until after the December 20th meeting... Anyone else "on hold" and in the same boat? Any suggestions? After talking to my professors I already know the grades I received, but they aren't "official" and won't be on my transcript until the 23rd.

I really hope they make decisions about students on post-interview hold today. It would be an excellent Christmas present - accept or deny - just knowing would be awesome.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think they will be denying anybody on hold. The hold pool is for applicants who will eventually be put on the waitlist in May. The decision date today is to determine if any in the hold pool currently will get accepted (based on how many accepted applicants have turned down their spot at UK, which can't be too many at this point).

Still on hold. Kim Scott said they are trying to be very conservative with the number of ppl they are accepting because they just sent in a proposal to increase class size. They won't know anything about this until early march which means they won't look at holds again till then either . :-/

Samesies.
Although didn't know about the increase in class size. Thanks for that information. Will they be increasing clas size for class of 2017 or for later years?

I believe for 2017 and onwards cuz she said they are anticipating the proposal to get passed around March. Are you in state hold? And does anyone know how many ppl usually get accepted off the wait list for UK?

Talked to Kim Scott also. She said every person on hold is still on hold - no one was moved to accept or wait list status. Good news - it sounds like. She said people on hold are very rarely rejected.

Hi, I was actually put on hold last year. It was a really long wait, because I then ended up on the waitlist in April and then got accepted in May. Hold is kinda a precursor to being on the waitlist if the committee meetings are inconclusive. If you're on hold, it means they like you, but you didn't get the number of votes needed for acceptance. If UK is one of your top choices, I would say make sure to let them know that. Call up admissions from time to time to remind them you're still interested.

How good are they about letting you know of your chances of acceptance once on the waitlist?

So..maybe a bit paranoid, but what is everyone wearing to this? Don't wana show up in jeans and a tee-shirt while everyone else is wearing jacket/tie.

I don't think a tie is necessary, but since they are referring to lunch as a "reception," I wouldn't wear jeans either. Slacks and a nice shirt/polo should be fine. I will be wearing slacks and a nice sweater or blouse.

I was told professional casual, so yes khakis and a sweater would be fine. Nothing too fancy.

Has anybody on a pre-interview hold heard anything?

I have been on hold since September... what started off as a "well, better than a rejection let's see what happens now" is turning into an "oh well, another program should suffice" 😛

Has anyone been taken off pre-interview hold this late and still been accepted?

Curious, those who have interviewed for the Rural Track program, how was the interview at Morehead different than, or similar to, the interview at UK the following day? Furthermore, what kind of questions were you asked at the Morehead interview?
Thanks...

My Morehead interviews were 45-60 minutes each and they mainly questioned my experiences growing up in a rural town, what drove me to medicine, and especially what inspired my interest in rural medicine and where I want to eventually practice. Both of my interviewers were from urban cities outside of Kentucky, so we talked a lot about what drew them to Morehead as well (I always like to hear why the interviewers think I should choose their institution). On the other hand, my UK interviews were 20-30 minutes each and the questions were pretty much the standard ones I practiced: why medicine, what event/person first inspired me to pursue medicine, what I do in my spare time, explaining any discrepancies in my file, what specialty, clinical/volunteer experiences, goals, etc., but I felt like they gave me a bit more freedom to guide the interview to topics I was interested in talking about.

Can anyone that went to "second look" give us wait listers the rundown on how the day went? How many people showed up, IS vs OOS? Just wondering if they talked about any new info. that wasn't covered at our interviews? Tuition, etc...

I understand they recorded the event and were going to post it. Does anyone knows if that's done and where/link?

The school has a YouTube account, but so far only last year's videos are posted. There were around 80 students plus their families from what I could tell.

As far as new info, financial aid was mostly a repeat of interview day plus some clicker questions about loans/school facts etc. and a Q & A session. Other than that, a few docs and Dean de Beer spoke about what it's like to be a med student and some of the opportunities for research/outreach at UK. Hopefully the videos will be up soon! Good luck, all!

Can anyone confirm if these were all the presentations?

Yes, those were all of the presentations. I was a little surprised at how short the actual financial part was, but I live close to Lexington so I can't really complain. I think the whole event was more focused on swaying on-the-fence students.

Anyone had any updates. On hold since December. Not quite sure if I'm waiting to hear something in march, April, or anytime after? Emailed said those on hold will be reviewed again in the spring. Pretty vague.

Anyone from the 1-12-13 interview date heard anything yet? I believe the AD-COM meets today to decide our fate...

Has anyone heard anything from UK about scholarship announcements? I'm wondering how do they contact you, by phone or by email?

Merit scholarships were announced by phone. I called out of curiosity but didn't get a call myself. It's possible that some could open up when people drop seats as well.

hmmmm... does this mean that if you did not call so far, no scholarships?
