I interviewed last Tuesday and Susan in the admissions office said when they make the decision on your application, they will either put you on the waiting list or high priority waiting list. I don't think you can move up from the waiting list to the high priority waiting list. She also said there were a record number of interviewees this year and that they might not even make it down the list for accepting all the people on the high priority waiting list, which means they probably won't accept anyone off the waiting list this year. Rankings for these waiting lists will be released in early April, is what it sounded like to me.
I assume it would be obviously stated in my letter if I was on the high priority waitlist? It doesn't say anything about that, so I suppose I'm on the regular waitlist. Bad news I guess 🙁

Do you know if they accept updates? It seems like the consensus is that TC doesn't, but I'm still not sure about Duluth.

Minnesota is #7 for primary care, ahead of a lot of really good schools. It's debatable exactly what this means but still, it's pretty cool, huh? :naughty:

It is awesome and it definitely says something about the school. However, I was interested in how those ranks are calculated, so I looked into it. One of the major factors that goes into that stat is how many students from a given program decide to go into primary care. So a school that recruits students that drool over going into primary care is going to be ranked highly in that regard. Nothing against the school, but that seems like a misleading metric to use.

It would be interesting to see how schools rate at "pushing" students towards primary care, but I doubt that could be effectively measured.

Duluth Ladies and Gents,

Wondering if there is anyone in the Duluth area or desiring to visit the area to meet other class of '17 matriculants to the Duluth medical school. Everyone here is talking about the TC. Wondering who is following these forums from the Duluth side.

Quantify the ratio of primary care focused classes, electives, and/or clubs to those of "specialties". I don't know, It would be pretty general.

I'm going for Duluth.

Anyone know approximately the number of students that typically get accepted before they move on to the wait list?

Anyone have last year's wait list statistics? (sorry if this was posted elsewhere)

Thanks

For Twin Cities? I don't know the number accepted before the wait list, but I know that from previous years, they have accepted between 50-70 off of the wait list.

Received the waitlist letter (TC) a few days ago. This was the last school I was waiting for. Good luck everyone and congrats to those who have been accepted 🙂

got called from my dad and got rejected off the waitlist.. really hurt by this one as it was by far my number one choice.

Got the rejection letter. Interviewed late Jan for TC campus. Good luck everyone!

Kalbrecht I'm sorry to hear this man. I am a bit confused though, they reject people off of the waitlist before they come out with rankings?

i was just as shocked. when i heard i got mail from the U i was expecting it to be ranking or something. then my dad said no it says that they're rejecting you.. was pretty shocking/painfuul all at once.

Do rejections come via e-mail or snail mail?

mine was snail as well.

That seems so odd, I'm really sorry dude! Maybe because of your Duluth acceptance? I don't know if its in their protocol, but it seems like it might be possible that they figured you would take Duluth? I really don't know, but congrats on the Duluth acceptance!

I've been looking at the threads for the last few years, and I don't see anything about pre-ranking waitlist rejections or post-interview rejections. Anyone know if this is the first year they've done this?

i don't really know either. i thought it was a violation for school's to communicate this way (and I'm pretty sure despite them both being U of M schools that they still are different schools). I don't know but I guess it makes making a decision easier ha!

Don't Duluth students spend the pre-clinical years in Minneapolis though? Thats what I had always heard. Then do clinical year up north?

No, it's the opposite. Pre-clinical years in Duluth and years 3 and 4 in Minneapolis.

my understanding is 2 pre clinical in Duluth then the next 2 clinical years are optional locations with rural for a year being a potential choice as well as Minneapolis hospitals or remaining in Duluth.

I can say that a couple years ago I was #70 or so on the Waitlist at MN when the rankings first came out, by August of that year I was #3 and ended up not getting in. I just recently found out I was put on the Waitlist again, and although the numbers change from year to year I figure if I'm sub 50 this time around I have a pretty good chance of getting an offer. Lets hope!

This is pretty much what happened to me. I was #68 last year and ended up getting to #4 and did not get in. Fingers crossed for us this year to have better luck!

Rotation options for both Minnesota and UMD are the same... Both groups enter the same lottery for rotation selection, and both have options for RPAP (the rural primary care rotations).

Is that referring to TC?

Waitlisted today at TC via snail mail 6 weeks post interview. Here's to hoping for a good ranking...

Same here, except 8 weeks post interview. I called the office and asked when would be the earliest/latest I would hear back about a final decision, and the lady on the phone said May 15th and the first day of school, respectively.

it would seem they've gotten quite stingy with acceptances.

I spoke with the director of admissions recently, and she said waitlist rankings most likely won't be out until after May 15th. The last few years they've been out earlier, around late April or early May. Can any reapplicants comment on when they say rankings will be out vs. when they actually come out? Thanks.

great...any reason why the ranking list will be late this year?

🙁
Does anyone know how many people make it onto the wait list?

She said the last committee meeting is on May 1st, so I assume wait-list rankings come after that.

I thought it was everyone who interviewed and isn't accepted (putting it at about 350-400), but this year there have been some post-interview rejections so it could be less.

I was on the waitlist for a month then rejected. I don't know why they just didn't reject me outright, as I didn't even know that it was possible to be rejected from a waitlist before May 15th. Best of luck to everyone else though.

Sorry to hear about that. The admissions director said they've interviewed over a hundred more applicants than last year, so perhaps the waitlist was getting a little out of hand. I do think it is a weird practice though.

The woman I spoke with on the phone said 150 - 200 people will make it on the "alternative waitlist" (aka the final waitlist).
