Question: I have an interview on Tuesday. I am considering cancelling it, if I get accepted to my top choice school instead. I should hear from them by Monday. Is it bad form to cancel the day before?

I certainly don't want to upset anyone, but I'd hate to waste anyone's time, too.

Thanks!

Cancel if you can. Maybe an IS applicant will get the spot.

Have an interviewed for Mizzou on the fourth of February!!
Will be looking to see if it's possible to crash a night with a student ambassador. Is anyone on SDN an ambassador by any chance?

I lived in KC and will be driving down there.

Ha that's funny I have an interview the same day (tomorrow) and am also from Kansas City, did you attend UMKC?

-The interview process varies from person to person. But I can say that the interviewers are all very kind and are not out to get you. The biggest advice I can give is: be genuine.

I have interviewed at Mizzou twice, and I can tell you that both times I had one great interviewer, and one weird one. Asking off-the-wall questions, not explaining what they're asking, trying to trip me up with questions no non-med student would know the answer to.

So just be prepared for a possibly weird interview.

I did. We probably seen each other around campus!

Can anyone tell me how early (during the first two years) does Mizzou gives the student opportunity to be exposed to the clinical setting? And how does it work?

(For example, I know a school that gives student a chance to talk with patient and takes history in the hospital during their M2 year.)

Can any recent interviewers shed some light on when to expect our next updates?

Lindsey said that around 30 seats has been filled. There will be a end of feb update before the final decision in march ~22 ( they started the interview cycle one week late this year)

Dang I was hoping it was going to be closer to the 15th. Oh well, life goes on 🙂 thanks for the info!

I remember them saying that there was a free clinic a lot of students are involved with, which gives you a chance to practice things like history taking.

Just interviewed at Mizzou last week (really liked it!) and I was told in-state + 28 MCAT + 3.5 GPA = automatic interview invite

I've never heard that before! At least not directly from the school. I do remember them saying that reapplicants were given an automatic interview.

Hmm... I wonder who told you that. I wish I can post anything more than anecdotal evidence but my friend of mine this cycle is in-state, 29Q MCAT (11PS/8VR/10BS) 3.5+ GPA rejected POST-secondary.

Another friend of mine was also rejected post-secondary last year with with 28 MCAT (6PS/12VR/10BS) 3.5+ GPA. Most likely rejected for her PS score.

Here is the interesting part.

I'm in-state and I received interview last cycle 27S MCAT (10PS/8VR/9BS) 3.52 GPA and this cycle with 25Q MCAT (11PS/6VR/8BS) 3.48 GPA.

What do you think? I REALLY can't imagine their apps to be that bad since they both have been accepted to different schools KC and Kirksville this cycle.

It's my understanding that there are NO automatic interviews...only automatic secondaries. 28 MCAT/3.5 GPA qualifies you for automatic secondary.

I haven't heard about the automatic interview but I have heard that Mizzou likes reapplicants. Especially if you have something to show on your application that you were not a bum for the past year while reapplying.

I think what happened is that Mizzou USED to give automatic interviews a few years back (hence many of us hearing that from multiple sources) but have since switched to an automatic secondary. The only info I have for this is that their website used to actually say that "all in state students with a 28+ and 3.5gpa get an interview". Now it just says "all in state students with a 28+ and 3.5gpa get a file opened automatically". File opened = secondary?

While this is true, I'm pretty sure somebody said on my interview day that all reapplicants (who interviewed previously) were given automatic interviews.

I didn't know Mizzou screened for secondaries at all though?

I think what I heard when i interviewed is that all the people who get waitlisted but not accepted will get automatic interviews the following cycle. I mean theyre guaranteeing a lot of interviews then haha...think about it. say if youre in-state, and they interview 500 people...they only accept maybe 100 or 150 total (including the waitlist)...then by what youre saying, theyre guaranteeing that if the other ~350 people apply, theyll all get interviews...no way! haha

I also heard the same thing. It apply to only in-state though I believe.

Think about it though...like i said before. if there are 300 instate people who interviewed and they only accept 100. They are guaranteeing that the other 200 people (granted they apply the following year) will ALL be getting interviews. This means that they are going to be disregarding a lot of qualified applicants for the following cycle as already 200 of the 300 interview spots will be taken up. I was told it is only the people who get waitlisted but not accepted. This makes more sense. If they waitlist 96 (say 80 are from missouri), and maybe 40 or 45 of them get accepted, then that means somewhere between 35 and 40 spots will be guaranteed an interview for the following year.

It is definitely only those who were waitlisted. I distinctly remember them saying this from the interview day.

Accepted! Feels good man, this application process has been a long and arduous journey. I think this school is my top choice after going there and seeing their facilities. I was surprised to see how nice of a school it is. Nice simulation center. My interviewer explained the PBL system to me and I was sold after that.

Dang, you must have done a really good job to get in before the next status update. Congrats! I am super jealous.

I guess so. I just went in there spoke my mind and they were incredibly receptive. I didn't get that feeling from other schools.

When did you do your interview if I may ask.

....assuming they didn't matriculate elsewhere. I think your numbers are probably a bit off.

I was flat-out rejected last year, but got an interview this year. At least I now know I "earned" it and it wasn't automatic!

Can anyone tell me how early (during the first two years) does Mizzou gives the student opportunity to be exposed to the clinical setting? And how does it work?

(For example, I know a school that gives student a chance to talk with patient and takes history in the hospital during their M2 year.)

One of the selling points of Mizzou is the early clinical experience. During your M1 year your morning classes will all be science based, and the afternoon classes are patient interviewing based. After teaching you the basics of getting a history and taking notes, starting the second block (October) they will assign you to what's called an ACE experience (which is essentially like a mini-rotation) three times a block. Depending on your facilitator, it'll range from either a laid-back shadowing experience to talking to the patient by yourself and doing a full physical exam.

Also, throughout every block there will be several standardised patient assessments (which are basically hired actors and actresses) and you have to talk to them and take notes as if they were real patients. For instance, if you learn about alcohol and substance abuse during one of your afternoon lectures, later on in that week you will actually talk to an SP and try to convince them to quit smoking or drinking. (It's essentially role playing)

Lastly someone else mentioned something about the clinic, and yes 98% of the M1 class is involved with MedZou. It's basically a community clinic where you work with physicians and upper classmen together and help Columbia residents who are on the lower socioeconomic side. Currently I've signed up for the program but haven't gotten a shift quite yet so I can't give any personal experiences, but all my friends who have done it all said that they've loved it.

i so want to go here!

Does anyone have some better stats for the number of people interviewed vs. accepted? I know MSAR has data for interviewed vs. matriculated, but there is usually a big waist movement here as well (i.e. more people accepted than just matriculated).

Check the 2011-2012 application thread. One of the upperclassmen posted an estimate of how many individuals were accepted off the waitlist.

If you guys check your packets from when you interviewed, there's that glossy black and gold sheet with the class of 2015 stats on it. If you take the information of 166 applicants accepted, minus 104 spots (which is how many people are in that class), you can figure out that the previous class had 62 individuals taken off the waitlist. Now because of budget changes, our class (of 2016) and possibly your class (of 2017) will be at 96 individuals instead of the 104. What this means is that there will probably be slightly less people moving off the waitlist.

Thanks Monocles, super helpful as always!

And at my interview, they said that the 96 person waitlist, is split into thirds (32 each) and that in the past they've made it through all of the 1st third, and between half and all of the 2nd third. So between about 48 and 64 off the waitlist. Given...this is only based on previous years, so not guaranteed.

While being in the bottom third would obviously be less than ideal, at least those people get an automatic invite next cycle (and it sounds like Mizzou has been historically favorable to re applicants).

Do they tell your position on the wait list?

Not the exact number but they will tell you which third you are in (top, middle, or bottom).
But once you find out you're waitlisted, you have to e-mail them to ask which third you're in...they won't just come right out and tell you.

Nervous about Mizzou. Totally my top choice, but my application is lacking on tons of recent volunteer stuff. They never asked me about volunteering in the interviews, so I didn't get to address the fact that I've done plenty of volunteering, just a lot of 5-10 hours for one weekend types. I think that is going to be held against me. Hoping that my other stuff can boost it (5000+ at hospital full-time in lab with 1000+ hours clinical experience, 500+ shadowing, research, etc.).

Don't stress too much. Adcoms do weird things sometimes. 🙂 Once you've interviewed here and they do the initial review...you file's closed. Nothing more you can do but sit back and wait...ugh.

Wait...and dance.

Just a thought, second look day is officially scheduled for March 22nd and 23rd, so I highly doubt they would give out final decisions on March 22nd (no time to make travel plans at all). My money is March 15th.

They were discussing on saving ~10 seats til the 22nd for those interviewed in March (?). Giving out the rest of Acceptances prior.
