Woot! I'm surprised that we haven't seen more comments yet! The bill has passed the house and the senate with nearly perfect votes (70 to 4 and 26 to 0, respectively), has been sent for enrollment, and just needs to be signed by the governor or left to sit until the veto period expires!

I have to say for myself, I am very excited that the bill passed and have been following it religiously. However, now I think everyone is anticipating when acceptances and rejections will be released. Also, how many seats will the U add this year; the full 40 or only 20? Applying is a long process and the end is near!

Oh my gosh I can't wait until I hear back from the U since I only had 2 interviews.

I spent the last week doing a second look at another school. It was so nice to be removed from the drama of the legislative session. Hopefully the band-aid will be ripped off soon, so to speak.

I am interested to know what everyone's situation is right now while waiting to hear from Utah.

I am currently in my last semester of classes. I interviewed at one other school but was already rejected from this school. I really want to stay close to home so I originally only applied to 5 schools. If I don't get an acceptance from Utah this year I am going to reapply in June and apply to another 10-15 schools.

What is everyone's plan? Do you have acceptances at other schools, or what are you doing right now to improve your application for the next year.

Interviewed at OHSU, but still waiting... no other acceptances, still waiting for the U.

plan for this summer: Artificial heart program intern, travel
Fall: emt-b
Spring: work as emt-b
plus volunteer at a refugee center downtown.

OOS, one acceptance, awaiting decisions from 6 other interviews. Would most likely take the U over it, but given the OOS tuition, if I got in at one of the schools that's significantly cheaper, I'd probably do that.

I'm an Idaho resident, working as a loan collector as I finish up my last semester. I have an acceptance just keeping my fingers crossed for the U! In-state tuition would be about half of the other school I've been accepted to so I have high hopes.

Where could you work as an emt-b in salt lake? I have a few traffic violations and because of that I am ineligible to work in an ambulance. From what I understand, getting an ER position as an emt-b is very tough in Utah.

I got a call from the admissions office today. They offered me a position at the U. I was told in two weeks the mass letters will be sent out, hopefully that helps everyone. Good luck to you all.

Got accepted into Midwestern today. That was my only other interview. Obviously Utah is still my first choice but it's at least good to know I'm going to be a doctor.

Are you messing with us?

Wow, I'm jealous, but congrats! If I see a call from 801-587-**** I will be the happiest man on earth...

No, not messing. Mine was an early acceptance, guess thats why they called. I didn't post to gloat, i just saw that people were wondering when the emails would go out en mass so i though i would share what i heard.

Would you mind sharing your stats? It sounds like the only people who should expect phone calls are those who applied for early acceptance, right?

Ok, after a lot of reading on the legislative website, it looks like the bill was sent back to the rules committee because of fiscal concerns. The rules committee is not going to meet again, so I am pretty sure that the bill is dead. I hope that I am wrong.

Nevermind. I guess I was a few pages behind. Weird. This is good news!

Congrats!! So they are still doing early acceptances and the normal ones will start in two weeks? By early do you mean the 25% of the class that gets accepted early? Also did they say if notifications would be by snail mail or email? Congrats again! Thank you for sharing what you know! When did you interview?

Sorry fellow Utahns. I was hoping the legislature would get their act together this year and increase the size. Just know that there are a lot of us displaced Utah med students all over. You'll be in good company.

The bill was passed this year.

Nope, that's an older submission. The bill has passed!

The bill only raises a few seats in the Utah category and the MD/Phd category...Idaho hasn't said anything about it >.> So, in reality, it is a crapshoot...the U of U manufactured this crisis of their own whim for more doctors...I think it was a ploy to get more research money.

I just double checked, and the U doesn't have an early decision program. I guess it must just be the 25% that gets their decision before the rest.

Another two weeks.. come on Utah.. other schools are mostly finished and I feel like you just barely started 🙁

I think i'm the 25%, they didn't specify. I didn't get a email or letter, they called me first to tell me a letter was on the way, but i think they'll send both email/mail to others. From the conversation it seemed in two weeks all decisions will be made, I didn't get an exact date. I interviewed the end of January.

Best of luck.

I have a decent GPA and an MCAT in the 30's. there is no early acceptance program for the U. I interviewed in January.

That's good to know. Thanks! I interviewed November 15th with an MCAT of 37 and a GPA of about 3.7. I applied late in the cycle due to a missing letter of recommendation that took a few months to show up, and I think it hurt my odds with a lot of out of state schools. The U is my top choice, and as a utah resident, my best chance. I'd love to hear some good news today, but I suppose I can wait two more weeks.

2 weeks is an eternity. At least it falls under the time frame I have to make a deposit at my other school

That's awesome--congrats! 👍

I did three interviews and have one acceptance so far from Miami Miller but the U is my top choice since I'm instate. I'm dying to hear back. I interviewed October 1st.

Hey guys I'm an out of state applicant with string ties and considered in the under represented section to the admissions committee (this combination is the reason why the u is considering me as we all know it strongly favors in sate applicants) any out of staters get any decisions yet? Btw another two weeks lol dang I remember at my interview we were told no news is good news but it appears everyone has no news except the lucky few who got accepted

They actually said, "No news is good news"??? Our group was told that they would NOT be sending out rejections to any interviewees until late March. No news from the U is just frustrating limbo.

First time posting, and I'm just curious about something.

Is anyone worried about being waitlisted? I keep reading about people getting accepted into other schools, but would prefer the U (totally understand, I also had my top choices!), but I'm starting to get worried about being rejected due to the (what seems to be) high volume of people preferring the U.

Perhaps this is just stemming from the U being my only interview? Anybody else have thoughts on this?

LOL! I feel like I WAS waitlisted by the school--had an interview and not given a definite yes or no.

The U waaaay over interviews. They only have slots for about 20% of the people they interview. Lots of other schools, you can walk away with a 50% chance of getting in.

I don't prefer Utah. If I'm accepted, I will do more poking around to find out if it is right for me. I got in to a Texas school, so there is no financial advantage to staying in Utah.

No, actually,, 82% of the 20 new spots this year, and of the 20 more spots to be added next year will be reserved for people with Utah ties. This is consistent with the 82% that must have Utah ties already (in the past and present) so it's not just for research money.

I'm applying to the U next year. Dr. Chan explained in a presentation a while back that we should strive not to "double dip" in each of the EC areas.... I'm just wondering how those of you who have been through the application process have handled this? For instance, all of my leadership positions were also volunteer positions. I have three solid long-term leadership experiences, but if I list them under leadership, I almost have no volunteer service.... and vice versa ... also, I volunteer in a hospital and a hospice, but that is patient care so I can't put it as volunteer? 😕

Does the secondary have you divide everything into these categories like this? Should I just go find another volunteer position and leadership position to satisfy these boxes? Is it better to meet the average requirement by "double dipping" rather than not double dip and be below average?

thanks

In the secondary you do have to separate the experiences. I did not doubledip on my experiences since the University is very clear to not double dip. They also like a certain amount of volunteering each year prior to applying. I would suggest looking at the requirements they have set online, then meet with a premed advisor. Go over with the advisor what you have done and what you still could do before your secondary application is due. The advisors are normally very helpful. Good luck!

Just got an acceptance call from Dr. Chan that was followed up by an email!!! Good luck everyone!

Congrats!! Did you status change yet? Also, do you know if you are still part of the "early acceptances" or if they have started all notifications? When did you interview, and are you in-state? Congrats again!

Hey Cinta, could you call him back and give him my number? That would be great, thanks!

And now I find myself logging in every 10 minutes to see if I've had a status change! I'm hoping for some good news soon!

Hey guys! I am a first-year med student here at the U and am a member of the Interview Tour Committee. I'm sure I took a handful of you on your tour during your interview day. I just wanted to comment on a few things regarding this crazy time that is the end of March/beginning of April for UUSOM applicants. First, in meeting with Dr. Chan last week concerning how to best go about offering acceptances, we agreed that it would be awesome for the admissions committee to make a personal phone call to extend a seat-offer. From a few of the previous posts, it sounds like they are making that happen! Secondly, the UUSOM typically accepts 20-25 people before their mass-acceptance during the end of March. As has been stated, this is not an "early acceptance program." You will likely never even know who in your class was accepted "early" or who was even accepted off of the wait list. This time last year was terrible for me as I waited in anticipation, just as many of you are doing. Please just know that we ALL feel for you and that the end is in sight! Dr. Chan and the new admissions committee are absolutely fantastic and the Medical School is headed in an extremely positive direction right now. I love the U and am crossing my fingers for all of you!

May the odds be ever in your favor 😉

I'm guessing that it's part of the early acceptances since it was by phone rather than mail. It's my understanding that Dr. Chan doesn't call every student who is accepted. Has anyone heard otherwise?

Never mind! It looks like they are calling everyone who is accepted. Ring phone, ring!
