I called admissions and asked them if we would receive a phone call, an email or a letter if we had been waitlisted or rejected and they said most likely a phone call or email if waitlisted and an email if rejected.

They also said the first excom meeting of the year is October 31st and they have not made any decisions yet...

Finally, they said that if there is not enough time to talk about all the applicants during the meeting then a decision will not be made. They said this is entirely normal and that we shouldn't be worried if we do not hear anything back for a few weeks to months. That just means we haven't been brought up in the meeting.

I know a lot of this is common sense, but I figured I would post it here so they don't receive a hundred calls asking the same information over and over.

Thanks weird - then why did the person below already claim to have received an acceptance...?

Who knows? Maybe the interviewers all agreed to an acceptance after the interview. Then the excom member would have to go to the meeting. The excom member may suggest accepting him in the meeting but according to the school, nothing is official until after the vote during the meeting

Thanks for the info.

That would suck to get a phone call to be informed that you were placed on the waitlist. I'd rather receive an email for that. Hah.

Now i know to not bother worrying until after Halloween.

thats interesting. I called the admissions office yesterday and they said they had no idea when the first EXCOMM meeting was. Either way, that information is helpful. I've been freaking out for the past two weeks over this lol.

Interesting...When I received the call from my EXCOM member, I didn't ask him whether the entire committee had met yet. I am aware from previous UW SDN forums that some applicants got accepted a lot earlier? I don't think the committee was bypassed but maybe the process is expedited for "very strong" (LOL) applicants??

Who knows? The inner workings of the EXCOM will remain forever clandestine. 😎

Maybe I shouldn't have posted anything--didn't mean to freak everyone out...but it's SDN, I guess.

From what I remember In last year's forum, somebody was accepted about one week after their interview, wayyyy before everyone else heard back. Given that, I think that there are a small number of immediate acceptances going out. I know in Idaho, around two people are immediately accepted from the Boise interview (out of 35ish people) before everyone else interviews in Seattle in Feb. Then they are considered as a whole.

This is only speculation. But would describe how one person can get accepted before the committee convenes.

Accepted today! My ExCom called me around 9:30 am to tell me the great news! I interviewed the week of the 15th so I'm not sure if the committee has met or not. Good luck to everyone- I hope you all get calls soon 🙂

Congratulations! Lucky you. Did you interview on the 16th?

Another good reason to be in the WWAMI...no hurricanes!!! It looks brutal out there.

Interview in two days! If I had a low amount of shadowing (40 hours with a single physician) should I expect to be peppered with questions on what I know about clinical medicine? More intense roleplay scenarios? Is that how this game works?

I would wager that they will be more concerned about what your shadowing meant to you instead of the lack of diversity in shadowing experience. Expect there to be a role play scenario, sometimes there will be no correct answer so hang in there and give it hell 🙂

Guaranteed role play at end of interview, will likely be a job or med related ethical issue that is intended to put you under some stress.

Can I have some feedback on the longest an IS has gone without hearing anything?

It was kind of fun, actually. In a sick, twisted sort of way... :meanie:

They usually ask the ethical/scenario-based question on what you have experience in, or what you talked about during your interview.

The interview is very specific to each person's activities and experiences. I think they really value shadowing experience, especially because they emphasized it in their focus group sessions on how to improve your application and because they asked about it a ton during my interview.

Thanks all! I have a lot of other clinical experience, but I'm still suddenly finding myself worried that my formal shadowing experience is a little dated at this point. I am really glad I took a year of bioethics last year. Makes me a little less freaked out at interviewing for my #1 school.

Good luck to other folks interviewing soon! Sounds like there is at least one person on here that I might run into tomorrow.

That's not what I had. My role-play was nothing related to anything I've ever done. Mine was about a mistake a nurse made and it was being blamed on me. Nothing I could say was really the correct answer. Too much insulin was given and the patient goes into a coma after I had already left for the night.

It was just a medical mistake and the family was blaming me for it. The interviewers played the family.

Rachelkj, I'll see you there tomorrow! Very excited to interview and meet a fellow SDNer!

The role play and or scenario questions may or may not be directly related to your experiences. Mine weren't. The purpose is to see how well you think on your feet, what criteria you consider important in reaching an answer, and how well you can defend that answer.

And what earf said about shadowing is true...they love it.

My role play/scenario were directly related to my experiences, which was good because it wasn't as stressful as I thought it was going to be.

That sounds a bit intense. Mine was nowhere as complicated as that. My scenario focused on the patient-physician relationship and had nothing to do with my previous experiences.

So. I'm guessing today is the first ExComm meeting? Good luck everyone.

That's helpful...it's always nice when you have something to refer back to. My scenario focused on an ethical issue in a private practice, whereas most of my clinical experience revolves around the emergency department, EMR/CPOE systems, etc. I sort of bumbled through the first few seconds, but eventually felt like I "got into the scenario" or whatever. After that, it seems like things went pretty well.

That's exactly how I felt when doing it. At the end I had to explain exactly why I said the things I did and how I hoped the situation would resolve. I felt great during the interview until this last "question."

Hopefully I hear back today or tomorrow. Good luck everybody.

Anyone interviewed 10/19 or later hear back yet?

Have patience little one. The first meeting was today, so it's likely you will hear back in a few days to weeks depending on if they get to your application during the meeting.

Just got an email notifying me that I was put on post interview hold. It says I will be either accepted or placed on an alternate list upon further review.

My interview was on 10/19.

Really? At least it isn't a rejection! Right?

FWIW, my tour guide said a significant number of her classmates were in post interview hold limbo for some amount of time. I guess the UW likes to get a good feel for the pool before letting many people in.

Good to know. I think I'd rather be placed on hold than outright rejected.

Interviewed 10/09 and nothing yet. I think all this worrying has given me an ulcer.

I never got a hold email... So that could be great, okay... Or bad.

Best of luck to everyone. I assume most of us will hear soon.

II yesterday at 10:02 P.M. I am IS with 32 MCAT 3.65 GPA, and more volunteer and research hours then I care to describe. I was complete 09/7 so if you have been complete for a while hang in there.

II at 9PM last night.

Complete 9/25 (give or take a few days), 3.75, 32, IS

Seems like the UW Medicine domain is down tonight. Very strange!

For those that applied already, or maybe just remember better than I seem to tonight, do you know if the letter of recommendation requirement included letters written by faculty you had conducted research with (but not officially taken courses from) towards the overall requirement of three faculty letters?

Well, I just received the email from UWSOM that states I was placed in the applicant pool of people who will remain under consideration until April. According to the email, 46% of people in this pool end up receiving an acceptance. I am disappointed but I knew this was coming.

Good luck to those of you waiting to hear something.

Just got the under consideration email. Interviewed on 10/09. Dang.

3.9/41 WA resident, interviewed 10/22. Just got the acceptance email! Best of luck to all of you waiting for good news!

Rejected. OOR. 3.6ish. 29. Amazing ECs and interested in underserved medicine. So freaking disappointed.

Rejected post-interview. That's a downer 🙁. It had really been one of my top choices too.

But congrats to the ii's and accepted folks and good luck to those of you still under consideration!

Rejected IS. Nooo there goes my biggest chance 🙁(( Oh well, good luck to the rest of you all! 👍

For those of us that are "Under Consideration" and are a little confused as to what that means, I found this on the UW SOM website.

Decisions on applications are made at EXCOM meetings, which occur at least once monthly. At these meetings some applicants are accepted, some are placed ”under consideration”, and some are rejected. Applicants may be placed under consideration because the Executive Committee member representing them was not able to make a particular meeting, or because the committee wanted to see additional applications before making a final decision. Those applicants placed under consideration may be discussed at a subsequent meeting or may remain under consideration until the final EXCOM meetings in March.

Being “under consideration” is not the same as being on the alternate list. Acceptances or rejections can occur at any time for the “under consideration” group up until the final Executive Committee meeting for the applicant’s state.

Letters of acceptance or rejection are emailed out after each EXCOM meeting. Applicants who are under consideration will be notified at the time they are put into that status and then again monthly to let them know they are still being considered. We will keep you informed of your status and contact you as soon as there is an action on your application.

Sometime between March 15 and March 31, the Executive Committee meets for two to three days to make final decisions on those Washington and out-of-region applicants who are still “under consideration”. Final acceptances and rejections are made, and the Washington/out-of-region alternate list is constructed at this time.

Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho final decisions are made on the day after interviews are completed for that state.

All final decisions are sent by email, so be sure to manage your email account carefully.

Here to join the rejection party. Congrats to everyone still in the running!

I looked at your mdapps. That is a pretty high GPA and MCAT score. I am surprised you were rejected.

I have absolutely zero research, so that may have played into things. I felt like the interview went ok, but not amazing--definitely wasn't my best. When I had interviewed, I had already "fallen for" another school, so maybe that came across? I still would have considered them for a variety of other factors, but..all well. I sent an email to see if I could get any specifics.

On another note, their rejection letter was very nice. Reading it, you hardly know you are being rejected.... 🙄

I have a question I forgot to ask yesterday. I need to get a new phone very soon (the mic in mine is busted & I can't have voice conversations) - I might switch providers since my contract is over. Who is best for voice & data throughout the WWAMI region, Verizon or AT&T?
