February = any school that has accepted you can see where else you've been accepted

April = any school that you applied to can see where you've been accepted, whether or not it has accepted you

There's an inconsistency in the AMCAS FAQ page for this
https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/amcas/faqs/305002/canschoolsseeotherschools.html

Here it looks like only schools that have accepted you have access to the "Multiple Acceptance Report" and other schools you've applied to can't get any info until you've been accepted. But I'm guessing the AMCAS manual with this February and April business is correct because it's for the 2013 cycle while the FAQ page is old.

I've also heard that schools get turned off when they see applicants holding several acceptances. It comes off as "hoarding seats in several classes" and "indecisive." Be sure to not hold more than 3-4 acceptances at a time. Something to keep in mind.

Anyways, back to Vandy- I LOVE YOU!!! It's amazing how even with offers from Stanford, WashU, and Pritzker, somehow Vandy still has something really special about it. Maybe I just love Nashville and the southeast, maybe I just love the new, beautiful facilities, maybe I just loved my interviewers and the super friendly/awesome students there. Idk what it is, but this is still my top choice med school of those I've been accepted to...😍😍

CONGRATS to those who heard back this weekend from Dr. Zic! 👍👍🙂🙂🙂😍😍😍

Hopefully we can be classmates!

Just got the call...still in shock, but it's a good shock!

Congrats to all the new acceptances!

Does Vandy set up a Facebook group or provide some way for us to talk with current students to get more info about the school (it seems like there are class threads for previous years)? Anybody here likely to matriculate?

I'd also be very interested in this. Vanderbilt made an absolutely wonderful impression on me during my interview and I'd love to connect with other prospective/current students.

Looking forward to seeing Vandy after reading everyone's posts. Should be fun! 🙂

Also likely to matriculate here. I'm so in love with Vandy 😍 No other school has impressed me the way Vandy has.

I would like to hear from current students about the new curriculum though

A facebook group will be set up and really start to get rolling in the spring.

I highly recommend you go to second look if you get the chance. Not only is it an amazing, fun-filled event, you will get to meet a huge amount of current students of all years (I met what seemed like 100 or so) in addition to many of your future classmates.

Thanks! I will definitely be at second look. 👍

Thanks Nymphicus! I was kinda hoping it could be set up sooner.

I'm gonna try really hard to be at second look!!!

Maybe I could ask you, Nymphicus, or the facebook group for some more info from it in case I can't go!

AHHH, just so excited to be in here, it has been my top choice since summer of 2011!!!!

Just wanted to pop back into this thread and echo Nymphicus in congratulating all who have recently been accepted to Vandy! The FB group will be a great opportunity to hear from some of the current students and begin to connect with your future classmates. Second Look is also an amazing time (sealed the deal for me to come to Vandy) and absolutely worth coming to.

If you all have any questions about the school before the FB group gets rolling, feel free to send me a PM.

anyone still waiting for interview? and not rejected yet? is Vanderbilt receptive to update letters? pre-interview?

Yes, I am also curiuos to know this! If so, how would one go about updating a school on recent grade updates? In a letter form or attached as an unofficial transcript?
Thanks.

I was complete mid-October and received the two check marks on Nov 15th ish. What about y'all. Might give up hope after this week...

I'm in the same situation (complete marks on Nov. 16th). I called the admissions office last week and they replied by email saying that applicants who submitted their secondaries should expect to hear within 6-8 weeks from date of completion (check marks) and that they will be offering interviews through January. So there's still hope as long as you don't get a mailed letter from them!

There are so many reasons why I would like to go to Vandy, but I'm very concerned about the single year of pre-clinical instruction. For someone who isn't the brightest and requires sufficient time to absorb the learning material in order to do well on comprehensive exams like Step 1, would the condensed curriculum at Vandy be a bad choice for me?

Any comments are very much appreciated.

Accepted!! Got the call from Dr. Zic this past evening. So excited! 🙂

If anyone is interested, I just got the "waitlist/continued" letter in the mail about 2 weeks ago, so there was pretty fast movement...not sure if that's indicative of anything, but just throwing it out there!

Ah, still can't believe it!

Did you send them an update post waitlist to prompt them? Or was it just out of the blue?

Here's how I think about the first year, but keep in mind I am not a current student but have been accepted:

Vanderbilt CARES about its students. Like really really cares. Their wellness programs for med students are nationally renowned. Given that, I feel as though if you have been accepted, then they have determined you CAN handle the material. Med schools are not in the business of making life hard for their students and not making sure they are prepared for the USMLE, Vanderbilt probably least of all.

I'm basically saying that if they think you can do it, chances are you can, and Vandy isn't going to leave an entire class of students out to crash and burn on the step exams because their new curriculum was too adventurous. Dr. Zic said they would discuss a whole lot about it at second look, so definitely consider going!

Also, I imagine step score is more correlated with the intensity and efficiency of the period of studying immediately prior, rather than the kind of instruction given in the pre-clinical years. What I like about rotations 2nd year is that we will have what we learned 1st year reinforced very quickly, learning what's more practical, rather than all the excruciating minutia. 2nd year rotations give you the chance to find out what you want to do, and then do research or work towards that goal all of 3rd year before applying for the match. That's where I think we will benefit the most.

Please, current students correct me on any of this if I'm wrong as it's all conjecture by me, I'm just so excited already to go here 🙂

I am a little worried about this too. I feel like our class might be the geni pig (can't spell) in the new curriculum.

Vandy ends their interview season in January?

Sorry, I meant inviting applicants through January.

Did everyone just get the survey email? Does everyone get that ;lol

I got the survey email too. I think all interviewees do.

Does Vanderbilt medical students have a gym to their own or do they share with the undergrads?
Also how close is the undergrad campus?

It's all in an arboretum, so it's like a 4 minute walk. Also, I think they're building a new gym that should be ready for us 🙂

Seriously??? This place just keeps getting better and better 🙂

Ah, they're considering switching to MMI next year in place of the short interview! Intriguing :laugh: 😍😍😍

Relatedly, it looks like UMich is also considering it (according to their twitter page)

Some quick comments:

You will actually still have two years of material before USMLE step 1. One year of preclinical "in-class" instruction and one year on the wards. While on the wards, you take the shelf exam at the end of every rotation as part of your grade (like at literally every other US medical school). I had students at other schools that take step 1 after core rotations that the shelf exams are great practice for step 1.

The medical school is conjoined with the medical center which is on the university campus. In other words, everything is there (including the VA). I just walked back from the gym. I don't believe there are plans for building a new gym, but it is under construction right now to greatly expand the facilities.

Here's a quick article I googled on it, I'm sure there's more out there.

Nope, no update or communication at all. Got the acceptance call 16 days after the waitlist letter in the mail.

Hmm. I got a letter saying "still under consideration for admission," was the letter you received different?

I think it's the same one.

Just sounded like an informal waitlist to me haha, so that's what I referred to it as

Ah, cool. Thanks. I viewed it more as an "under consideration" group than a wait list. 😳

I saw this on youtube the other day:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiMkteq4FWo

During my interview day, I was looking for the office for my short interview and was completely lost. Harry Potter comes up to me and asks if I was lost. He was rushing towards class himself but was kind enough to actually walk me to my interview and talk to me for a while about Vandy. Extremely nice guy. He cast a spell on me. Everybody I met there was super nice.

I was hoping to hear from current students (?nymphicus) about how it's going with the condensed pre-clinical curriculum. Any snafoos, what they are, how students feel about it and how they hope to condense it further next year for the incoming class. I looked at the curriculum diagram, but I'd like to hear from the students themselves voicing opinions. Thanks in advance!

The current curriculum is going smoothly so far. But since it's condensed, one exam would cover a lot of materials, which may seem overwhelming, but definitely doable. The school didn't switch directly to one-year preclinical was because of the concerns of overloading the clinical sites with two classes in the wards at the same time. I think your curriculum makes more sense. You learn everything about one organ system at one time, which is more efficient and again can be overwhelming, but you have the second year in the wards to consolidate what you learned in the first year. You will take board after rotations, so that takes stress off a little. Since the curriculum is condensed, you have third and fourth year free for your personal learning goals. Personalized learning is all what Vandy is about.

PS: Nymphicus is on an aircraft as of right now.

So does this mean there was some overlap between your class and the class ahead of you in the wards? Will there be any overlap between curriculums of our class and your class?

Also, if you had the choice, would you be a part of the 2, 1.5, or 1 year pre-clinical curriculum at Vandy, and why?

Forgive me for being so inquisitive, I probably won't get to go to second look 🙁

I noticed that Vandy gives out quite a few scholarships, full or 50% of tuition. How many of these are given out and how selective are they, eg. are there only a few for top-notch applicants?

Thanks, lxz! Can you comment about third and fourth year emphasis and immersion blocks and what most people do during those times? I'd also like to know whether there will be overlap between this year's class and our class. Thanks! 😀
