No generic questions. All based on your application. Hopefully your personal statement and application have been a true depiction of yourself. They review your app thoroughly to say the least. The day started at 10 and I was done just after 2. If your flying in don't forget to reserve a rental car prior on Hotwire (for the 25 and older crowd). The drive from Pitt to Morgantown was easy and had I not had to drive back west the rental would have only been $38 + gas. Still much cheaper than flying into MT (plus I had a car for the time being).

Everyone says that the interview is just to see if you are a sane/normal person. I don't really buy that. I honestly believe that they want to determine your professionalism, empathy, passion, ability to articulate, and wit. Sane/normal people can drop out, perform poorly, or just become bad docs. Interviews are conducted by experienced intelligent people who are presumably capable of identifying crucial traits in others.

Everyone also describes interviews as laid back etc. As apposed to what?
Mr./Ms. Applicant is it true that in 2009 in your freshman year that you received less than an A+ average?
Well, see that was...
Just answer the question yes or no Mr./Ms. Applicant!
Are people just expecting a large panel of black suit wearing, grey haired surgeons hum hawing over your file through the top halves of wire rimmed bifocals?

Sure they were nice and cordial but there was still a hint of expectation within the room.

Here is my advice. Respond, don't answer. There is no right or wrong just honesty. Be sharp. Try not to be repetitive but if you must, make it clear that you are aware it is a repeat (e.g. "As I mentioned earlier"). Don't plug unnecessary info...
How was your trip in?

Good, it really reminded me of my work in Africa with blind children where
I was able to apply what I had learned during the competitive research position
which I obtained as a result of my outstanding record of community service....
4.0 GPA.... 2000 hours of clinical experience.

Well then.

Silence should not be a result of your lack of response. If you have a problem in this area I suggest talking to someone about your ideals and different experiences that you have had. Engage in a conversation even if it is with yourself.

Remember idiots can use big words. Someone with real character and intelligence can be articulate using words a 5 year old can understand. (nothing against big words but they don't count for free points... ya dig?)

good stuff, thanks for taking the time to give us your insight

how many people interview you at once, are they one on one or more on one?

it's 2 people from the admissions committee at the same time for 30 minutes.

Don't be nervous! I thought it was actually a fun interview, granted I am on the waitlist but I'm also out of state.... Where are you from again?

i am applying as IS, recently relocated to WV

interview went awesome, really low-key, laid back. questions right off my application. no curveballs or efforts to trip me up.

i thought i killed it. will see in a couple weeks i guess...

I will be interviewing next Friday..VERYYYYY excited about WVU but trying not to get my hopes since I am OOS with no connections to WV, seemed like mostly everyone got waitlisted :'(.

What was everyone's impression of the school? students? Morgantown?

i thought the school was great. now, full disclaimer: i have nothing to compare it to, since its the first school tour i've been on. the sim lab they use to help train students was pretty impressive.

students were very friendly and did a great job selling the school. indicated that the overall atmosphere is pretty laid back, while still preparing you well for the boards. very high usmle pass rate with scores above the national mean.

motown is kinda small, but spread out for a small town. its def a college town, lots of outdoor activities, and large metro areas within a short drive.

I'm new to the SDN, but I received my acceptance two weeks ago. Best of luck to everyone applying, I hope to get to know you all very well come August!

Congrats! I'll see you there in August!

My interview is Monday, I'm leaving tomorrow. I guess I'll bring it up on the day of interview...in either case, time to review all the things I like about WVU.

PS; congratulations. I read your MDapps.

How'd it go? How'd it go?

Ha sorry about that.

Complete: 9/20
II: 10/2
Interviewed: 10/11
Accepted: 10/19

As for the interview, it's exactly as described in previous posts. Be prepared to talk about things in your application. For example, I studied abroad for a semester. The interview started off with "Tell us about your exchange experience." I could talk all day about that. Don't be surprised if you find yourself leading the conversation.

I heard couple of years ago they had students write an essay prior to the interview..do they still do this??!

I think they stopped this last year or this year. Anyway, no essay on interview day.

Well I've also been there several times before since I have lots of family living in Morgantown (five cousins and two sets of aunts/uncles). And yes they were included and elaborated on in my primary. The crazy thing is I even mentioned that trip to WVU in my personal statement as the event that most helped to solidify my decision to become a doctor.

So I'm just a little confused and disappointed at this point. 🙁 Thanks for the reply, definitely hope the protest does something.

It does not hurt to try. I was in the same situation. She wrote not strong ties... I live 10 miles from WV border. My parents work in WV - drive there every day- pay WV taxes... I emailed with letter from employer... etc... she acknowledged strong ties... and still rejected secondary again saying I took too many College credits during high school and should take a year off... how can argue with that... really they want me to take a year off ... what an excuse to reject secondary... my cGPA/sGPA 3.91 MCAT 31Q - does not make sense to me...

Good luck!

That sucks man. With that said, a year off isn't such a bad thing if you plan for it. You really do learn something with a year away from school. At least I have thus far. Though, if I was to be honest, I really wish I had either planned better and did something different, or gotten in last cycle. I just gotta be honest and admit I have learned/experienced a different set of life circumstances being away from school for the past 6 months.

letters possibly going out today...
Huh? What? Does that mean some of us waiting for II may still have hope? (or are these acceptances that are hitting the mail box?)

I'm a little confused. Are II's going out today? I turned I received that email about my only secondary being received about three weeks ago. I was under the impression that everyone who got a secondary gets an interview and I haven't yet and I'm about to go crazy lol

To those who are OOS, how long after mailing your secondary info did you receive the II?

I think the person above was referring go acceptances, but I'm not sure. I believe there was some evidence last year that secondary didn't equal interview, but it seems this year it's true. Maybe try calling them if you're really anxious. I'm not sure there will be much communication coming up because of Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I just got an II for January. Completed secondary was received by the school on 10/16. OOS VA resident. Is a January invite too late in the cycle? I feel like most of the students will be accepted by then

I heard from someone that applications to WVU were up 56% from last year. 😳 I feel like with all of those apps getting an interview is a really good thing. They're probably being super selective, especially as the cycle starts to slow down.

I believe the person was talking about decision letters. At the interview they told us that the admissions committee meets every Tuesday and then mails out letters on Thursdays.

No, it is not a late invite. The greatest majority of OOS applicants end up on WL anyway; and once you are on WL it doesn't matter if you interviewed in October or March.

Congrats! I just got mine today, too.
Also OOS.
Also complete on 10/16.
Also interviewing in January.

I'm optimistic. I don't think there are many schools that interview without keeping spots (not just waitlist) open.

This gives me hope. Thank you guys. I have a 27 with a 6 in Verbal so I was not too optimistic about MD schools. I have a 4.0 so that should count for something at the interview. My relatives live in Morgantown and one of the cousins goes to the undergrad college. Can someone comment on what might be my chances depending on personal experiences or anyone who is already accepted?

I will see you at the interview day then. It's good to meet people who are in the same boat. 🙂

I thought it said on the website that one must attain at least an 8 in every section on the mcat? Maybe that has changed?

You may get waitlisted being OOS, but I'd say after that a lot depends on your interview, LORs, and ECs. I know a few people in state who seemed like shoe-ins based on stats who got rejected or waitlisted this cycle because of lack of ECs and bad interviewing. Wow them and I think you have a chance. Numbers certainly aren't the only important thing at WVU, but be ready to answer why there's a discrepancy between your GPA and MCAT. Good luck! 🙂

Accepted!

3.90 undergrad GPA, dual degree BS in Biology, BA in Philosophy, MPH from Columbia, 2 publications, 27Q MCAT in-state
Received II Oct 10th
Interviewed Oct 29th
Acceptance letter dated Oct 31st

Good luck everyone!
