2013-2014 Eastern Virginia Medical School

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know when the admissions committee will make a decision for those who have interviewed already? And how often do they meet before a decision is made on 10/15? If we want to call before 10/15, when is a good time to call?

Application Complete

Secondary Invite: 3 September
Secondary Submitted: 12 September
Application Complete: 19 September

OOS, 3.7/34

I completed secondary before you? No complete email yet =/

Need some advice guys.

I am an in-state applicant and I was complete on 8/5. I have not heard back from EVMS since I received the complete e-mail. I am highly interested in attending the school, but am worried that I have not yet received an II.

Would it be acceptable to send an e-mail or notify them in some way of my interest? Or express my desire for an interview? I could mention my new job, new volunteer experiences, etc that I have been doing since I sent in my secondary.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

so i added Eastern Virginia to my primary app Sept 4th. its 16days later and i haven't heard from them about a secondary yet..should i be worried? or am i just being paranoid? lol
i've gotten secondaries from every school i applied to except Eastern Virginia :\ i love their program so i would love to come here.

They do screen so you might not get one. I got a secondary for UCSF but I haven't gotten one from UCSD and I was wait listed by them last year. There is no consistency in this process. On the other hand, the application cycle has picked up and this is high volume season. The time lines you have seen on SDN thus far were for applicants that submitted in July and don't necessarily apply now so if you have to wait awhile you shouldn't panic.

It can't hurt, but this is a very long process. I submitted to my state school last year on day one and didn't get an II until Dec 21st. Sending an update does show perseverance so go for it.

Now I am worried... My phone is crazy and sometimes people call me but nothing show up on my phone. No missed call, no voice message. I was completed August 23rd....

I think the phone calls are the exception, not the rule. My II was an email and they said 49 other people got the email. If they can't get in touch via the phone I'm sure they will email.

My school only has 1 semester of organic chemistry lab (2 credits). The secondary requires I input a second semester to continue. What do? Enter the same class for both semesters? Do they allow biochemistry lab instead?

"Briefly describe your exposure to medicine:"
How brief is brief? I was a volunteer at XYZ hospital in the XYZ department. I also shadowed an X, Y, and Z physician.
^ Is that good enough?

...I was complete 7/16 I wouldn't start worrying so soon

The secondary instructions address your specific question, but yes, list it for both semesters. Don't worry about bio chem. They know a lot of schools have a 2 credit lab. I had the same thing.

very true. my question now is..if i am pre-screened out, wouldn't i get a rejection email? or can i possibly never hear back from them? should i call to follow up? i heard mix reviews about calling admissions offices about your status.

Probably, last year I had one school reject me right away (Vanderbilt) and 1 or 2 more in October. The rest happened closer to March and May though. It's hard to say. I know EVMS rejected people pretty early last year but they don't seem to be doing that this year. That or people just aren't posting it on SDN. Just wait it out, hearing nothing is better than a stone cold rejection. You can shoot them an email after the typical 6-8 week screening period and show interest.

thank you for the reply! 🙂 I actually just got the rejection email yesterday. i wish i knew why though... i was within their MCAT/GPA range. i wonder if it is appropriate to call and ask why

Sorry to hear that. I would call. You applied and put work into it so you're justified in wondering why they weren't interested. The majority of schools don't provide feedback unless you interviewed but it's worth a shot. Best of luck!

As a side note: GPA/MCAT don't carry nearly as much weight in this process as people think. If you watch these threads closely over the next few months thousands of people with fantastic stats are going to get rejected from schools were they appear to very very competitive. It's just a result of schools getting 7,000 applicants with 4,000-5,000 of them having stats in the acceptance range. We are all decent at math and understand the stats, but it's a little hard to swallow when you realize that, inevitable, you get rejected more than you get accepted.

Any IS completed email lately? Im starting to get nervous. Does EVMS take a really long time to complete your file?

I was wondering the same thing about being complete... I submitted the secondary on 8/24 and still haven't gotten anything except the "we have received your secondary and will notify you when your file is complete" email. :/

Any interviewees been daring enough to call EVMS and ask if they were accepted? I interviewed on 9/13 and was told we could call before October 15th and they would let us know the decision. Now that two weeks have passed, I'm 99% certain their committee has met and made decisions. But I'm also too nervous to call

Haha, your post prompted me to call... I'm in! My first acceptance!

Congrats! That's crazy that they'll let you know before October 15th!

Whats the purpose of that rule anyway?

I presume it's to avoid some schools from sniping all of the top applicants really early?

Or it could just be a big trick from the AAMC to get people to apply to lots of schools out of neuroticism and therefore make more money.

If you could get in somewhere on August 31st then you may only add a couple schools to start with then if you don't get in add more...but this is all conjecture.

Congrats to Gene as well! I will be there next Wednesday and I'm excited to check out Norfolk 👍

Congrats. I guess they have a 100% acceptance rate.

congrats on the acceptances!

I have been complete since 7/15 ... i have heard nothing since then. is this normal?

Hi, I am current M1. It can take a while for them to get back to you. I was OOS and complete mid Aug last year and they didnt send me II until Nov or Dec. I don't think calling to check in with them will hurt though.

Just received an interview invite. I've been complete since July 24.

Mind sharing why you picked EVMS as an OOS? I'm interviewing next week and the school sounds great, but the price tag is pretty hefty.

I noticed that some people were in a similar situation as myself, so I decided to share. I am instate, and have been complete here since July 30th. I received no word from the school until I received an II this morning via phone call.
Although I have no idea how it works, it appears that EVMS may "go back" to earlier applicants that they have skipped at one point. My interview is also before the first acceptance date. My inference is that someone may have withdrawn from their II.
I have however sent a short update via email several weeks ago that was relevant to EVMS' missions. It may or may not have had an effect.

Good luck to you all!

What email address did you use to send in your update? I'm thinking about sending a thank you/update letter to the committee.

I sent it to Kerry Jones. He was the one that sent me the complete email.

Interviewing here tomorrow morning!! Who's with me? 🙂

Congrats on the acceptances and interviews!

I interviewed on 9/13 as well, and had just called them today, but they said they don't have a decision for me yet. Is this a bad sign? What should I do now?

Eek. I feel like a bunch of people have read your post and declined to reply because they're concerned about being the bearer of bad news.

Here's what I know: When I called, the woman who answered explained that the committee had met on Monday 9/16. No one in this thread has posted about being waitlisted, but someone I'm friends with called about her 9/13 interview and was told over the phone that she's been placed on the waitlist.

Maybe your interviewers went vacation and were unable to present you at the 9/16 committee meeting (...as well as all subsequent meetings?), leaving your application undecided.

Or...maybe (unfortunately) you've been rejected, and this isn't news they want the responsibility of delivering over the phone. I hope this isn't the case!

You could try your luck with sending a letter of interest or an update letter, assuming you have something to update them on. Good luck waiting for the next two weeks!

It's really tough to read into anything about this process. A letter of interest may or may not help.

The only thing you can say for certain is you were told that no decision was made. If it were me, I would sit-tight.

:luck:

I'm with this person on just waiting it out until the 15th. I interviewed September 25th. We were told to hang tight for 3-4 weeks, and to keep in mind that the admissions panel meets when it meets. Right now I'm at sending thank you letters stage, if this school is your top choice then it sounds like a letter of intent sounds reasonable, but I'm not expert.

OOS 3.5/3.5/30

How long does it to take the complete email? I've only gotten the secondary received email :/
