2013-2014 Eastern Virginia Medical School

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you so much surely, BlackBox, and ruedjgtc for the advice! It helps a lot!

Does anyone know how often the committee meet, do they only look at your file when they meet or before as well? The wait is killing me, haha.

Good luck to everyone!

II invite yesterday afternoon, OOS complete in mid-July. I haven't seen it posted, but does anyone know a rough acceptance rate for people with interviews?

65% of OOS applicants are eventually accepted, whether it's outright or off the waitlist.

Any interviewees been daring enough to call EVMS and ask if they were accepted? I interviewed on 9/13 and was told we could call before October 15th and they would let us know the decision. Now that two weeks have passed, I'm 99% certain their committee has met and made decisions. But I'm also too nervous to call

Has anyone called their office recently, to find out their decision? Too nervous to call. >.<

The admissions committee met last night so decisions for people interviewing after 9/16 should be ready in the next few days

Not sure I can afford to attend this interview! The flights into Norfolk are crazy expensive from my location. Even driving is costly because it is a pretty far drive and that takes more time away from work :/

I am in the same position. I booked my interview for the latest date possible (which was only October 30) so hopefully I have a couple acceptances by then, and therefore a reason to not attend it. Although I want to go just to see the area since I have never been!

When you say ready, do you mean that they might notify us before the oct 15th date?

They only send mail for acceptances/wail lists, or emails for rejections, after 10/15. If they have a decision for you, and if you call them before 10/15, they will tell you on the phone.

I called last week after interviewing on 9/4 and was accepted. IS

Waitlisted. Does anybody know generally how many students are accepted off the waitlist? I saw on the thread last year the waitlist is ranked upper, middle, and lower third. The office didn't mention my ranking.

what day did you interview there?

I mean whats so great about this school? Does it have a small class size? PBL? Good value? To be honest I just dont get it. Any help? I interview here at the end of the month and I just want to know WHY.

You mean you applied to a school, and you don't know why? (kidding!)

Go to their mission statement. Hopefully, there's something there for you to discuss.

I just called today and found out that I got waitlisted too. IS. Top 1/3.

Do you guys have any advice on what I can do to improve my chances? My stats are borderline competitive, so I am really worried now. And EVMS is my top choice and I really want to come here.

What are the chances for IS to get off the WL, and when does the WL usually start to move?

I would probably consider sending a letter of intent. When did you interview?

is there an option to stay with a student host?

I imagine you're in pretty good shape....at my interview day they said they usually have to admit somewhere between 300 and 350 to fill their class of 150....so since you're in the top 1/3 I'd say you have a pretty good chance of coming off the waitlist at some point

I just followed up with the office and I'm top 1/3 too. She did mention the list is fluid and likely to change as they interview more. I haven't checked last year's thread to see when movement started, but the admissions office said that it isn't likely to start until after more applicants are interviewed.

Well I've gone over their mission statement (kind of troubled by the frequent mentions of corporate interests......) and nothing remarkable stands out.

if this is your top choice, why??? to those of you who have interviewed, what makes EVMS shine? I just want to know! 😍:luck::banana:

Don't ask someone else to tell you why this school would be a good fit for you. The information is there on the website... if you really cared to learn about the school.

I'm very curious what you answered on your secondary. EVMS specifically asked "What is your interest in EVMS?"

Well I think I just gave a good enough answer. I dont' understand the passive aggressiveness that characterizes this board......... sharing your opinions on why you enjoy a school doesn't jeopardize your chance of getting accepted.

the mission statement is like four or five sentences to describe three broad values. pretty weak.

One unique feature of EVMS.... Couple years ago they received a grant from General Electric for ~40 handheld ultrasound machines. I know first and second years have been using them in anatomy labs.

They're super super clinically and community oriented, more than any other med school. They were the first med school in the nation to have standardized patients.

Hmm, got an email today -

"The Committee on Admissions has reviewed your application to the entering class of 2014 at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. The Committee will re-review your application after we have received your grades from the program in which you are currently enrolled.

If you have any additional information that would enhance your application, please forward it to the Office of Admissions as soon as possible."

I guess that's bad? Complete 9/26/13, OOS 3.5/32

Received an II today. Complete 8/8 OOS with no ties to VA.

I think this is good. They've reviewed it and deemed you good enough to be considered. You didn't get flat out rejected.

Except that I will be reviewed for an interview possibly in late december though?

They just gave you a limitless supplemental secondary application. They are on the fence about you. Convince them you are awesome. It's not a bad thing because you didn't get rejected.

People get accepted post-May, there's nothing you can do now except do awesome in your program. Stop worrying about how late it will be and make sure you get a 4.0. 🙂

Got an II, first one for me. Super excited, this school looks great. Completed last week of Aug, IS 3.45-3.55/35-37.

Anyone receive any post-interview rejection emails? Too nervous to call the admissions office, so just hoping to not receive a rejection email from EVMS today/tomorrow and taking that as a sign that an acceptance/wait list snail mail is on the way haha

Just called the admissions department and was accepted...

stats: 31 MCAT, sgpa-3.6, cgpa-3.65,

My interview was September 18th, I'm out of state by the way...

Haha no I am ecstatic, I just don't appreciate when people start cheering themselves about an acceptance..I was just trying to maintain my cool haha.

rejected post - interview, OOS. A little surprised as I thought interview went well, maybe they thought I wasn't a good fit. Good luck everybody!

Reading everyone's post is making me so anxious! I was complete 9/11 and haven't recived an interview invite yet. I just keep checking my email multiple times a day.
