2013-2014 George Washington University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Would it be ok to use numbers instead of spelling them out to fit the character limit for secondaries? (ex: 1st instead of first)

What did you guys put for your diversity? I'm thinking of putting music. Played violin for 7 years, many spent in youth orchestras.

To the people worried about being put on hold--do you think maybe they're just waiting to get more applicants to really go through and decide who to interview since AMCAS has been such a **** show? It seems like it might just be that they're not ready yet. Thoughts?

Interview invites didn't go out until about the 16th last year. Stay positive guys. No one has been rejected.

When did you submit your application?
I went from Complete straight to on hold. Okay, perhaps there was an 'under review' status, but the time difference between when i checked showed just the two. I submitted 6/29.

+1. The one thing keeping me going is the threads from last year. Many many people posted about their status shifting a bunch throughout the cycle; it seems that GWU may still have some sense of how they feel about applicants even if they're not 'currently under consideration'!

Submitted my secondary, such a great feeling! 👍

That seems like a good one. I wrote about being trilingual and living abroad. I took it as "what do you have that makes you stand out". Music is definitely something that not all applicants have. Good luck!

You guys may be getting your hopes up for a single school a bit much. You realize they get like 12,000 applications a year right?

EDIT: By the way, I'm also on hold. I'm just fairly certain that being on hold means nothing except that they'll come back to the applications when they actually send out interviews. This thing just started.

Damn. My status already says "Your application to The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences is complete and has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee. To date, no final decision has been made and the Admissions Committee has placed your application on hold for re-review at a later date."

thats the kind of stuff they are referring too when talking about diversity? i just talked about an experience and how that experience gave me a unique perspective that I can contribute to the school. Is that stretching it?

That's what I talked about.

cool i discussed the time when my best friend was diagnosed with cancer and i watched as he slowly declined to the point of barely able to walk.

Isn't that more your friend's essay than yours, though?

[Speaking broadly here - if you made it applicable to you, then obviously disregard this]

Just submitted my secondary...first one down! And it feels good!!

"For the 2013-2014 application cycle (Summer 2013 through Summer 2014), please indicate activities,
academics, employment, or other occupations to account for full-time activity (approx. 30-40 hours per
week) (750 characters)"

can anyone explain what this means? what is full time activity?

They're referring to full-time activity as being any combination of "activities, academics, employment, or other occupations" that total 30-40 hours per week. So if you're working 20 hours a week, volunteering 5, shadowing 10, and like... training for a marathon 15, you hve your 40 hours right there and that's what you should be talking about.

I think they just want to know you're not sitting on your ass for the next year.

I submitted about four days ago.

I wouldn't worry about it; judging from last year's thread, virtually everyone is put on hold by GW at some point in the cycle. I wouldn't put too much thought in to it

Ok thanks that makes me feel better. I gotta cheer up and start getting used to the ups and downs that will be taking place all throughout the cycle. Thanks for the positive thoughts.

Put on hold today. Does anyone have any insight on whether this is a "real" hold since they're not giving out interview invites yet? I combed through last years thread and couldn't find a conclusive answer.

I just submitted the secondary (not yet AMCAS verified, but wanted to get it out anyway)--are we supposed to get some sort of instant email notification that we've submitted it? All I have is that it changes on the website to say they got the secondary.

Hey everyone,

Just wondering how I should treat my secondaries. If I said I did activity A in my primary and explained what I did there, can I just say that "I am continuing with activity A for 2013-2014" and not explicitly say what I do again?

So these are future activities that you plan to do? Does going to college full-time count as "academics"?

Just got a secondary invite!

After seeing many receiving GW's secondary invites, I wonder how specific those messages from GW are. Is there anyone who applied GW but was not asked to submit a secondary?

If so, please say "I". Thanks

😛

No... They send it to everyone.

I think everyone did. Did you apply there and not get one?

So in my case since amcas ain't verified, GW says to notify AMCAS. Does this mean just sit and wait till amcas verifies? I submitted app on 21st so I'm not panicking considering there still on the 11th submission date.

Last year, II's started being sent 11 days after secondaries were sent out. Some of you guys may be getting some good news in the next few days.

This year is going to be an irritating one, considering people's verification dates will be much farther spread apart than usual. Argh. 6/12er here.

Exactamundo just wait until verification I wouldn't hassle amcas yet : ) congrats on finishing the secondary!

For the people on hold, was that an update that happened immediately or a few days later? I'm wondering because my status just says my application is complete and under review...

I'm on hold now and mine initially said completed and under review as well.

On hold, submitted 06/29. I wonder what this means, since it seems that most are being put on hold.

I'm hoping it's just what they're doing since II aren't going out yet :xf:

Not necessary true. Here are some things I noticed from reading last years thread:

- The people with "complete" status never having been put on the "hold" status received interviews first.
- GW changed people from one status to another often and multiple times.
- A lot of the people (not everyone) on "hold" status did receive interviews eventually.

Well, I guess we'll find out soon enough what it means.

Well damn. Guess I didn't make the "first cut."
On hold, submitted July 3rd.

For those that submitted the secondary... it was just a couple check box questions and then the few essays, right? I see a lot of other secondaries ask for you to list certain courses you've taken, but didn't see that on this secondary... did I miss something or does GWU just not ask that in their secondary?

GW doesn't require a page for coursework. Most secondaries are different.
