2013-2014 George Washington University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am on hold, but I just submitted an update letter since I have published a paper since the GW secondary and some other minor things.

Crossing my fingers.

Me too. They put me on hold. Idk why, I have an interview now but still.

For those of you who were put on hold before getting an ii, any idea how much time passed from when you were put on hold to getting interview notice?

For me it was about five days or so.

It was either 1-2 days of "on hold" time for me before I got switched back to the original status, and then I got an interview a day later.

Officially losing my mind. Dreamt about a status change last night and had to check this morning, because I didn't know if it was real. Still on hold... Haha.

GW says they have a max of 5 LORs. Do you know if six is okay? has anyone had experience with this? do they look negatively upon sending six? I heard most schools accept update letters, etc... I hope they don't reject me for sending in too many LORs

Haha my friend told me she also had a dream about a status change for GW..everyone is going crazy

I haven't had experience with this but I think you should follow their directions and keep it to 5 LORs. Doing otherwise might show that you can't follow directions

Hey Guys. I am trying to finish my secondary this week and submit it, but I was discouraged when I saw on their website that students from last year all had extraordinary experiences such as being part of peace corps and many other great ECs, which I don't have. I guess my question is whether they give admission to applicants without those kind of activities?

Thanks

To be honest, I think you need either outstanding stats or something extremely unique. They have 15,000 applicants. I know a number of GW undergrads they with great stats they didn't give the time of day. I would just try to realistically evaluate your app. If there's a shot, go for it.

Thanks for your fast reply.
I don't think I have anything extraordinary.

32 MCAT/ 3.88 cGPA/ 4.00 sGPA

200 hours of nonclinical volunteering./ 150 hours of clinical volunteering/ 50 hours of shadowing/ sponsoring 2 kids abroad.

So, I'd better not waste my money and time for this school🙁

Those are the students they feature on their website, of course they're special - it makes the school look better. I'm sure every class has a handful of people with outrageously unique experiences. However, look at all the kids that get in every year that are "cookie cutter." You need to self-evaluate and be honest and genuine about you as an applicant. This is going to sound SO cheesy, but every single one of us has something special about us. Figure out what that is about you and make it shine through. It doesn't have to be some crazy EC. You won't know if you don't try. This process will beat you down, don't let it get the best of you!

Thanks. I guess you are right🙂 I just need to calm down and focus.

Best of luck:xf:

Has anyone know of somebody with a 29 MCAT and get in? or even a 7 VR?

Yes I have but they had to go into a special program where they took an extra year. I think she had a 27 3.2 or so. GW will evaluate you for everything but I honestly think they love bragging about that something special more than any other school. Otherwise they would have a higher GPA and MCAT with 15,000 students applying.

Their median MCAT for the latest class is a 30, and their 10th percentile MCAT is a 27. I'm going to say that they probably accepted quite a few people with a 29 MCAT.

Put on hold... Oh well, better than a flat out rejection.

While that may be true I think OPs 7 in verbal might be a bit concerning to any school.

We have very similar stats and hours. I got an II. Keep your chin up.

everyone seems to be put on hold for the msot part, but they do note that they interview from sept to march so hopefully thats good news. also on hold here

I've been on hold now for 4 weeks. Man I hope I hear back soon. I really want an II.

do we have to complete secondary application to receive an interview?

Same! Complete on June 28 and "on hold" for well over a month.

Good luck to the both of us (and everyone else in the same place!)... :xf:
Is there a specific "on hold" status? Or does the status just stay at complete until you receive an II or are rejected?

If I recall...my status literally has the words "on hold" in it somewhere. Thats how you know... 😉

I was complete on 7/30 and my status just says

"Your file is now complete. At this point we have received all the necessary credentials including your secondary application and your letters of recommendation in order for your application to be reviewed. While the committee does its best to review applications in a timely manner, please be aware that in order to do a thorough review of your file it may be several weeks until you hear from us again. We greatly appreciate your patience during the application process. Please feel free to update your file during this time using the GW Admissions Portal."

So no hold... so either they haven't gotten to me yet or I am just in limbo.

quick question - is having no status better than "on hold"? (i submitted my secondary on 7/24).

You either have a "compete and under review blah blah blah" status or you have a "you have been reviewed and have been placed on hold for re-review at a later date blah blah blah" If you don't have a status, you aren't complete yet and nothing has been done with your fill.

ok i guess i mean is a status of "complete and under review" (given that i've submitted on 7/24) better than "on hold" at this point?

Well, It just means that they haven't looked at your application yet. So, is knowing your going to get early onset Alzheimer's disease in 20 years better than not knowing and then all the sudden being hit in the face with it? Just a matter of personal preference I guess.

Just kidding. Chill out and wait for them to get with you

Received an II today!! I was complete on 8/1.

I checked my status everyday and don't believe I was ever put on hold... but my friend visited the school (they have offer campus tours every Monday) and the tour guide said that being on hold is actually a good thing...so I am not sure what that means. The tour guide also said that it is a good idea to send GW updates (I never did because I did not really have anything else to add, but I suppose discussing your continued interest in the school would help).

Good luck everyone!

What were your stats?

im also interviewing at georgetown a few weeks after, im not even going to bother with the in area email. I know its a significant amount of more money for me to fly to D.C. twice, but oh well.
Has anyone had any luck yet in getting a response back from GW after sending them an "in area" e-mail?

Got put on hold today. I got put on hold at UC davis as well, why doesnt anyone want to interview me 🙁 haha I feel like I shouldn't be this anxious so early...

anyone think it's too early in the cycle to send a LOI? I was put on a hold a week or two ago

Interview Invite! Complete late July, was never on hold (as far as I know). They gave me an early October interview.

Best of luck to those still waiting!

Just got my II. GW what up!? I'm excited 👍👍👍
