2013-2014 Georgetown University Application Thread

Coming from Seattle, would Washington DC be close enough to Boston to warrant an In the Area email?

Costs about $70 for a one way ticket from Boston to DC, which would be nicer than spending $300+ again to get back to the East Coast.

Boston is 450 miles away from DC. There are as many as 5 states in between Massachusetts and DC. The lengths people go to to send in the area requests! Unreal.

With that said: go for it, can't hurt.

I apologize if this has already been addressed, but how is 5,000 characters supposed to fit into one page single spaced? It's going to be more like 3000-3500 for me, with Times New Roman, 12 point, 1 inch margins, I'm sure it doesn't matter much either way, but I'm puzzled at how they got 5000 characters.

You can decrease the margins even further.

Georgetown, please show me some love!! ::fingers crossed for an interview::

I know I'm a little late in the game, but my AMCAS was verified 9/3 and I haven't received a secondary from Georgetown yet. Should I email them or does that mean I was rejected or should I just wait?

You will get a secondary - I think GTown does it in batches, so you may have a line ahead of you before recieving your secondary - I'd consider pre-writing so you can fire the secondary right back to them once it does arrive.

Good Luck!

For those who interviewed - I think Ms Sullivan said that we are supposed to email after we receive a response from Georgetown, or did she say BEFORE we receive a response? I know it makes more sense after, but just wondering what you heard. PM me if you need to

I heard her say that we were supposed to email her after we hear a response indicating that we are on the wait list. She claimed that this is the only way of getting off of the wait list. With that said, I think I am still going to shoot her and my interviewer a thank you email or letter. What do you think.... do most people send thank you cards?

does anyone who has interviewed care to shed some light on their interview day experience? thanks and good luck to all.

Just to comment on the thank-you note issue...I am a Student Assistant in a Top 25 medical school's admissions office for their residency program. So, it isn't medical school admissions, but I go through the whole process each year of sorting through applications, interviews, ranking people after interviews, etc, etc...

We get SO many thank you notes, for both the interviewers and the program director. I'm in charge of delivering the mail, and, whenever I see a thank you note, I've been instructed to throw it in the garbage. So, I don't think it would help to send a thank-you, but I say if it makes you feel better, go for it.

I believe she meant after receiving a wait list response. But I sent thank you notes after my interview anyways. Even if they're not considered by admissions, I still think it's appropriate business etiquette.

My MCAT was a 30: 7 12 11. I'm an NCAA D1 athlete with a 3.74 science GPA. I have research, clinical experience, and volunteer. I have also held a ton of leadership positions in Sigma Nu. With my 7 in verbal should I even bother applying?

G-Town has been quite lately with its IIs ... I want one!!!

Definitely apply. I was told by Ms. Sullivan herself that she loves NCAA athletes. She understands the time commitment and respects it. I won't go so far as to say you are guaranteed an interview with a 7 in verbal, but I will say that being an NCAA athlete definitely helps at this school.

Has anyone with a 3.5/3.6 and 32mcat gotten an interview here? One of my top choices and want to see what chance I have.

DUDE.
Awesome name. Much prop.

Someone last year had a 3.4/30 and got an interview. Non-URM, female. Go for it.

Hey all, so my application was marked "complete" as of 9/3. Would it be considered too early to send an "in area" email if I'm going to be in DC for another interview at the end of October? My instincts say maybe I should give them some time so they don't rush reviewing my app, but it'd also be nice to not have to fly to DC twice.... Thoughts?

anyone interviewing next Tuesday (9/17) and want to meet up before/after? PM me

I'd send it sooner rather than later, as interview spots may already be filling up for around that time point. They were receptive to my in the area request (sent request 7/25, received II on 7/31 for 9/9 interview). Yay, Georgetown! 😍

Thanks! I sent a request and received a response saying that all the interview slots have been filled through the first week of November, and that they had not yet reviewed my application. I guess timing just didn't work in my case.

I'll take it over an outright rejection though!

At least now you know!

Is it psychotically early/aggressive if I send a combined update/letter of interest within a week of interviewing? Admissions says to normally expect 8-10 weeks after interview for a decision, but since we're relatively early on in the cycle they explicitly told us mid-October (~5-6 weeks). I have a publication I'd like to let them know about, and my interviewer told me to update them with my additional shadowing. I have the letter drafted and it just seems silly to me to sit on it for a month when it's ready now... Patience is not my virtue...

I would send it now. They seemed pretty receptive to things like that. However, I would position the letter more as an update rather than a LOI. I think they only consider LOI after placing people on the wait-list. With that said, I would definitely add a few lines explaining your interest and desire to attend Georgetown.... this is just my opinion though

Ah good call. I'll need to save my strongest bullet points for our 3 paragraph persuasive essay!

Would anyone who knows mind sharing relevant information about the interview day? Are interviews open or closed file? Are interviews conversational or more formal?

Thanks!

I've found the SDN Interview Feedback is helpful in compiling recent accounts of interviews over the past few years.

It is an open file interview, one on one, with either a 4th year medical student, clinician, or PhD faculty member. Mine was very conversational, though they do make sure to ask a few of the more typical interview questions (why medicine, why Georgetown, etc). There's an optional breakfast with students, optional lecture, then a welcome, financial aid presentation, Dean Sullivan's talk, tour with current students and lunch, and then a final presentation from either a Dean or the Director of Admissions before your interview.

I'll do my best (I forget the timing of everything so I'll just guess)

~8:30-9:00: Breakfast with current medical students. This was optional but I recommend attending. It was a great chance to ask about their perspectives on the school and what they do on a daily basis.

~9:00-10:00: Class with current medical students. It was interesting to see the setup and presentation of the class. This was also optional.

~10:00-10:30: Financial Aid Presentation. The big takeaway here was that we are all going to be in a LOT of debt.... SURPRISE!!!

~10:30-12:00: Mrs. Sullivan spoke to us about the risks involved in attending medical school. This was the best part of the day in my opinion. She was extremely candid with us and was not trying to hide the fact that making such a huge investment in our education is a huge risk. She gave us a lot of background on Georgetown and was there to answer any questions we had as well.

~12:00-1:00: Tour with current students. This was very informative and the students were great... they were there to answer any of our questions.

~1:00-2:00: Lunch and meeting with Charles Campbell. This was a very casual discussion about the school and was very comfortable. Again, he gave us a chance to ask any questions.

~2:00-3:15: We all gathered together and were called back for our interviews at different times. The interview lasts about 30-45 minutes. Mrs. Sullivan claimed that the only three questions that were going to be asked were: Why medicine? Why Georgetown? Something about Cura Personalis (I forget the exact question). With that said, my interviewer didn't ask any of those questions. Instead, we had a very casual conversation about how the application process is going, how competitive I feel my application is compared to others, what other schools have offered me interviews. He also asked about my family life and for me to clarify some details on my application. The interviewers do not get information about your stats but do have access to your essays, whether or not they read them is up to them.

All in all, it was a very relaxed day compared to other interviews. It seems to be a great school with great people.

Anyone know approx #s from US News for % interviewed, % of interviewed accepted?

Just got an II, really excited to be interviewing here!

I just got my II about three hours ago! Very excited!

For those curious, 3.4c, 3.5s, Non-Trad (military), 34. Completed Aug. 15th.

I haven't yet picked a date but the range seems to be Nov. 11th-14th right now. They mentioned that I must schedule before Sept. 24th or my invitation will be withdrawn.

Good luck everyone, hopefully we will see each other at the interview and on campus next year!

For anyone who interviewed, are you only going to email Donna once you get a response on Oct 15? Or are you going to send a letter of interest before Oct 15? It was never made clear to me..

Waiting for a response. I did send thank you notes and am pondering an update letter (not LOI).

For the LOI after we get a response: we are supposed to send it to Donna Sullivan, but address it do the Dean of Admissions, correct?

From what I understood, email Donna at the end of Oct. if you haven't heard back from them by Oct. 15. She said the LOI's don't get read until early December and they just get stacked up so the first ones read are the ones submitted closest to the day they start looking at those.

Hope that helps!
