2013-2014 Oakland University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've got a question regarding the prereq coursework listing in the secondary.

I got AP credit for bio so I don't have any bio labs on my transcript. Should I just enter "No" for those two and remark in the notes that I will complete them in the next few semesters? IIRC, prereqs have to be met by matriculation, not acceptance correct?

I called about a class I still have to complete and they said yes, just list it in the notes section, 🙂.

Out of curiosity, I took the LSAT at the same time I was applying and did really well on it. Is this something I should upload in the 'UpLoad additional info tab' or would this cause adcoms to think twice?

Already submitted seconadry fyi.

I doubt the adcoms would care about the law school entrance exam. They might care about the GRE would I don't think the LSAT. If you upload the LSAT they may question your intentions in pursuing medicine ie why didn't you go to law school., etc.

Just my 2 cents: do as you please.

I thought the same thing.

Bit of a dilemma.

I have only 2 letters in so far - 1 history and 1 psychology. Both should be pretty good and Oakland doesn't seem to have specific science/nonscience letter requirements. I'm waiting for about 3 other letters, including one from the PI that I did 3 years of research with. I've emailed her to remind her but I don't know when it'll be in.

Should I submit both my current letters to get the ball rolling for Oakland, or should I wait until I have at least my PI letter in? I've heard its a red flag to have a lot of research without a PI letter. I'd still submit it whenever it did come in but on the off chance that it's not in prior to OUWB reviewing my app, would it hurt?

INTERVIEW INVITE!

congrats!!😀

if you dont mind me asking what are your stats? oos?

Yeah they emailed. I am actually really glad I have internet (albeit slow) here in Africa or I probably would have missed the scheduling

When did you submit secondar? When were you complete?

Submitted 6/29 but don't know when I was complete...I remember it took a few days for my letters to register in their system.

Congrats on the II!

fwiw i was complete two days after submitting. fingers crossed!

I also got an INTERVIEW INVITE!

I submitted it a few days after the application opened up.

In state applicant, 32 MCAT, 3.86 science GPA

Under the semester/quarter box, how do we input the semester? For my school, its Fall 2011, Winter 2012, Spring/Summer 2012, Fall 2012... Do I put it in like this or do I follow the same setup as the AMCAS application?

Thanks guys and good luck everyone 🙂

I was wondering the same thing... anyone care to enlighten us? =]

Just got an interview invite! It is my first one so I am pretty excited. I was complete on 7/9.

Just scheduled an interview! 32/4.0 IS and can't wait!

I have my letter marked as received and I am still not complete so I called to ask why. They said you need 3 letters and a committee letter only counts as 2 letters. For those wondering, apparently Oakland requires an additional letter even if you have a committee letter. Anyone able to confirm this? This is frustrating because I had about 6 or 7 people send in letters to be used in my committee letter so I am running out of options...

That's very strange; are you sure you talked to a correctly informed person? I only have a committee letter packet (with 5 letters besides the committee cover letter) and I was marked complete at least a week ago. 😕

Unfortunately I do not have a packet with multiple letters, I have one committee letter. My school writes one letter combining all of the details from each letter/questionnaire into a committee letter and then the person who writes the committee letter then expresses if the candidate would be successful in med school or not, etc.

Oh, I see. Would it be possible for one of the professors who wrote you a LOR already to upload their letter to AMCAS? I doubt your committee covered the intricate details of each letter in their one letter--if they have discarded the individual letters already, I would ask one of the original letter writers to upload their letter/send it to Oakland.

Take this with a grain of salt, tho; I'm just a fellow applicant.

Yea thanks for the advice. I ended up asking a professor that told me during the year that he would right me a letter and I never got around to asking for it, and he is writing it now. So problem solved. But it is stupid that a committee letter doesn't cover the requirement at Oakland, but it does at every other school

Oh good! Yeah, that's very strange...I would guess it's because they're a new school and really want the most detailed info possible to pick their fourth class from--I heard somewhere that the first four classes really can make or break a new med school.

How do we know we are complete and ready for review?

I never received a confirm email from them, however, on the app page, i have all green arrows, and "application file complete" is green arrow.

does that mean i am done?

Yep that means you're complete. I believe they email for interview invites, though.

great bc i see sometimes ppl on other threads, that are using the same "amp" app service get complete emails after they get all the green arrows

Yeah it depends on the school; some email and some don't. All the schools that I've applied to that use the same website design as Oakland haven't emailed to say I'm complete--you just have to keep tabs on the website.

Edit: just went to look at my email inbox; only 2 of my schools in total have emailed to say I'm complete; almost a dozen others have not emailed and I've only noticed I'm complete via their websites.

I was born at Beaumont hospital in Royal Oak, do you think that gives me an advantage? Just kidding 😉 good luck everyone!

Got an interview invite today 🙂. I submitted early, on July 2nd.

I'm an in-state non-trad and my states are: 33O MCAT, 3.4 gpa

This is my second time applying and last cycle I got zero interviews so this is really exciting!

How exactly are guys putting this semester thing? Would have been nice if they had specific directions.

I'm on a semester schedule and just going off of the AMCAS so for example I put "S1 2012-2013".... Is that what others are doing or am I way off on this? Thanks!!

I am on a quarter system, so I inputted "Fall Quarter 2010" and so on. I'm not certain that this is the correct method!

+1

First one of the cycle for me, very excited!

Submitted July 2nd (secondary) as well.

Congrats to both of you! I submitted on 1st and no II🙁🙁
This does not look good for me....

Don't stress. I completed my application In the first week of July. I didn't get an interview invite until I would say October. Was accepted the week after my interview. Keep your head up!

That is what I am doing currently in regards to the "Semester/Quarter" section.

I am assuming it is okay to put the same course for "Biology 1" and "Biology Lab 1" if the lab was a part of the same course on the transcript, right?

Wow! Congrats!! Do you mind sharing your stats? I submitted my app on Jun 24th, and I didn't get verified until today ;( Is this considered to be applying late? I really hope not 🙁

My stats were 3.5 35

It's not late but it's not ideal. Make sure to prewrite your secondaries so that you can get them in before the end of August.

So what is the general consensus on Optional Question 2: Additional Information. Is it a place to talk about diversity, or what exactly?

I got a first day interview and did not write the optional essay

Ok, you could be a very strong applicant. IMHO, that optional question should be doable. I think it is a good place to explain why OU based on your hobbies, preferences, etc.

I will be attending the OUWB this fall and although I haven't started classes yet, I hopefully can offer some advice on their application process, their admissions staff (seriously awesome individuals), the area, and any questions you may have about their teaching hospital. If I don't know the answer I should be able to find someone who can. Cheers and good luck this cycle!

Hello!
My biggest concern was about the area and I was just wondering what kind on opinion you had on it. How's the rental market?

Thanks

It's suburban which I like. I commute so I'm not sure what the renting is like around campus but I am sure it is reasonable.

Thank you for informing us about Oakland!

I am flying into DTW two days before my interview but will be landing late, so I will have one full day to explore the area before the interview. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do and where I should go? Thank you!

Not really sure, what are you interested in? If the Tigers are still playing you could check out a game...it really depends on your interests.
