Did you decline through the online portal (I can't remember off the top of my head if that was an option for this school) or did you call/send an email afterwards saying you were withdrawing? Maybe call them anonymously and check? Full tuition is pretty nice....
 
Does anyone know what dates have been reviewed and what applications are left to be reviewed? Or how many adcom meetings are left? The twitter account didn't specify for this week.
 
Little late here, accepted on 2/19! Anyone know what the deal is on scholarships? Sunkist206, did you get a separate email later?
 
Does anyone know if all scholarships calls were made yesterday or there is still hope? According to twitter, they were making the calls yesterday and I wasn't sure if that was it. Thank you in advance! 🙂
 
I'm pretty sure they didn't make calls for all the scholarships yesterday. They will definitely be offering more!
 
They said its on a rolling basis. I know people who got some still around May/June. Probably not the full tuition ones but there is still hope for all of us!
 
Anyone from the last few classes know what percentage of students get some sort of scholarships? Also, would OUWB accept update letters (post-acceptance) that could factor into scholarship decisions? For example, poster presentations, etc.
 
Hi everyone, I interviewed on 1/10/14, and I still haven't heard back yet about an acceptance/rejection. Is this typical or should I be calling the admissions office?
 
If you haven't heard from them then you're still being considered.

Got a call March 4th for a scholarship 25,000/yr. Pretty sweet!!
 
Do we apply for the scholarship? I got accepted back in early December but never heard anything about scholarship....

Just to chip in regarding scholarships: They really can be last-minute. I was accepted to OUWB in October during my cycle, but did not get a scholarship until July (1 month before school started). Caveat being they thought they were missing paperwork when they weren't, but either way, keep your hopes up :greedy:

Looking forward to seeing some of you at Second Look! (Okay, fine... I'm actually SUPER EXCITED to meet future members of the OUWB fam!!!) For those of you on the fence: I think they recently sent out a link to a Second Look video if you're deciding whether or not to attend. 😉
 
Oh, yeah... totally forgot why I was here to begin with. Sooo here I go: Around this point last year, I was deciding between schools. I figured I'd write a little blurb here because something like this would've helped me last year.

Originally, interview day made me fall in love with OUWB. However, I must admit I was slightly hesitant because of whispers from profs and friends (why go to a new school?) and really, it came down to why NOT go to OUWB? Because really, it's not just another new school... it's amazeballs. Here are a couple fun facts that helped me make my decision/I learned later/happened this year:
  • According to Dean Folberg, Beaumont is now a top 10 academic hospital because it created a medical school. Hooray! I was told they are highly respected and have top residencies... but hey, sometimes numbers matter. [Edit: Found an article here, confirming the ranking as #6]
  • Schools are wow'd by our student leadership (ask me during Second Look which ones are tracking our progress). One of our orgs (AMWA) won national awards two years in a row. This year, two students were elected to national positions of AMSA and AMWA. Our school's been around for how long? And we're leaders!
  • Surgical Learning Center at Beaumont. One of only 5 in the USA, 'nuff said. (One of the clubs had us go there to try out some interventional radiology equipment with the residency directors of Radiology. No big.)
  • Extracurriculars (plus food). Food speaks for the amount of events we have - I've been able to not cook for about half the weeks this year, no joke. We have a (not?) surprising number of orgs and lots of clinicians who want to interact with us. There's literally something happening almost every day, and often too-many-somethings so that you have to decide which lunch/dinner learning event to go to.
  • This is a vague point, but bear with me. If you went to a liberal arts college, you'll know what I mean. Everyone else, try to imagine what that is like. This is a personal opinion, but liberal arts colleges have some differing, unique qualities that are different from state or larger universities. (Not saying one is better than the other, just different). OUWB is your "liberal arts" medical school. And, after traveling and speaking with many other students from different schools, I've realized that I am trained very differently. It may not seem like it on a day-to-day basis, but our "grind" is different from every. single. medical. school. I can't exactly pinpoint what exactly it is about our students that is different from other school's (because honestly everyone will find a best "fit" for them)... aside from the magical combination of how we were selected, how we're currently being trained, and our strong bond as a class (and between classes). Please ask me to elaborate during Second Look and I'll try to sound less vague. But remember, basically it's magic. Dean Folberg has mentioned (or will mention) that in the future, people will see a student and ask "Were you trained at OUWB?" because we're so differently amazing ....and the only surprise is that I've already had someone ask me that at a national conference. (Fact.)
  • In the Second Look video, one of my classmates recalled a great quote from one of the Deans: "Pick a school where you're not only accepted, but celebrated." Cannot emphasize how true that is at OUWB, at every level.
  • Classes/Curriculum: Okay, so you're going to spend your time prepping for boards wherever you go. You'll compare XYZ school to ABC school and think to yourself "Oh yes, that's integrated! I'd love to go there!" (Not. 'Cause there are another bajillion factors, and almost everyone is integrated these days.) There are very few people who don't get tired spending 8-10 hours a day studying the mix of G-protein cascades, upper limb muscles, and ethics....and writing a research paper at the same time. OUWB has a great curriculum that changes in response to student feedback. You can chat with the Deans/Course Directors casually in the hallway, or make an appointment, or have the class Senators bring up stuffs....anytime (during business hours; although I've had email responses late at night too).
    • Again, this point may be lost in translation because you'd have to be able to compare it to other schools. So, I encourage students to ask questions during Second Look at OUWB and at other schools. Medical curricula are changing everywhere because modernity is slowly catching up... they're realizing that each student learns differently. OUWB wants every student to not only succeed, but to blow it out of the park. I got the sense that our school's goal is to not be another legacy school, but to make a legacy happen.
Wherever you go - be happy! No single place is perfect, but you (yes you!) are a wonderful addition, and you will make an impact wherever you go. I'm happy with my choice because I felt that "fit" once I walked on OUWB's campus... and the opportunity here has just grown. I feel like a part of the OUWB fam and I'm looking forward to greeting the next lil sibs 😉

Okay, rambled enough. Hope that added a bit of realism - I can be a bit starry-eyed about OUWB but yeah. I'm not sure I remembered to write down all the points (I can keep talking about OUWB all day, heh). Feel free to poke me during Second Look 🙂 or PM me if you have other questions!

Damn. Does this mean that the adcom is meeting to delegate last remaining acceptance spots or are appropriating wait list tiers?...or both? or am I going crazy?!?!

Just withdrew post acceptance, tough call considering the 100,000 scholarship offer (25k per yr) and how much I loved this school; hang in there!

Wow, that must have been quite a decision-making process; the trade-off must have been that much more worth it 🙂 Thanks for the encouragement and I wish you all the best on your medical endeavor!

Why bummed? It seems that you are more likely to be accepted as opposed to rejected if you're on the first tier waitlist?

I got waitlisted as well, first tier. Anyone know offhand 1) do most people on the first tier waitlist get in? and 2) if you come in off the waitlist, are you eligible for scholarships from Oakland?

First tier. I spoke to admissions about the waitlist. 100 people in first tier 50 people in second tier and 50 in third tier. They have never gone past first tier before.

The 70k a year estimated cost of attendance is pretty scary, but as a current M1, my projected costs are estimated to come in about 19k under the estimated cost of attendance. My example just highlights just how frugal spending and living with roommates can effectively reduce costs. Just something to keep in mind.

Don't be so sad. So far we have about ~40 people that I know for sure are going, of a class of 100. There should be movement from the first tier. The second one....not so sure. Best of luck!! Keep us updated 🙂

Wow, 19k? How does that even work out? From what I see the tuition itself is 48k/year, so I find it hard to believe that all your other expenses are coming out to 2-3k a year.

Tuition: $46,249.00
Rent & utilities: $4800 / year (w/ roommates)
This leaves 10k for remaining expenses
Cost of living here in Michigan is very cheap.

Ah that makes a lot more sense! That certainly seems a lot more reasonable haha. Thanks for the input. 60k-ish seems a lot more along the lines of what would be expected at most schools.

I thought this year's class would be 125 students? I was also placed on the first tier waitlist last week. REALLY REALLY hoping I get off! I didn't think I even had a chance to get in here after hearing nothing since October...

Unfortunately they have decided to keep class size 100. There is hope tho. Because we are a relatively new school, a lot of people choose to go elsewhere. I personally know 40 people who are for sure going. There has only been 95 people added to the official FB page, which the school is the one who created the page, so all students are asked by administration to join (so people are more inclined to) . If I had to guess, I would say at least 100 people are coming off the WL in order to fill ~40 (since many have already got in somewhere and will prob decline the offer when it comes in May) . But that's just my guess. Best of luck 🙂

They told me to like the page and they would add me, I did but they never did so the number on the FB might not be so accurate.

Yes the dean said every now and again she misses someone, but everyone on second look was in that FB page. So I am sure this doesn't happen that often. Still... It seems like there is lots of spots for grabs even with give and take couple ppl falling between the cracks. Hope you in there now. 🙂
