2013-2014 Rutgers University - NJMS Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If I forgot to send in a thank-you letter, do you think it's better to just not send one now, or send it? My interview was 3.5 weeks ago...

I think it's too late by now.

I interviewed on 10/23, and I suppose I would have "gotten in" on 11/12 if my phone had cooperated. I would have been more sensitive to the possibility of his call, but they said expect a 4-6 week wait and I got my decision in less than 3 weeks!! It is a good thing too, because I'm pretty impatient.

Congratulations! Whoa, that's a really quick turnaround time! Compared to all the others who posted in this thread (where the pattern seems to be decisions going out roughly 1 month post-interview), your case seems very unusual! I wonder if that will persist for the people who are accepted after you, or if you're just an anomaly? I'm curious to know as I interviewed on 10/30, 1 week after you did, so I'm wondering if I should get my hopes up and expect a quick turnaround or just expect something around the 1st week of December. I do remember someone saying on this thread or last year's thread that the class is basically full by Thanksgiving, so could this mean the last few acceptances are rolling out now and the rest will be Waitlisted? Eeep this is nerve-wracking! This school is my top choice, so I really hope I get that magic phone call!

Do you think it's life/death if you dont' send a thank you?

Also- anyone else hear back under 4 weeks/ do they call on Sundays only? Today marks the 4th week. Basically I'm asking if I should be paranoid all week, or just on Sundays..

No it's not. Your credentials and interviews get you in, not whether or not you sent a thank you letter. Dean Heinrich makes calls whenever he has time to, so it can vary. I have read that his free days are Thursdays.

Idk how much this helps, but my interviewer told me they would try to make their decisions before thanksgiving (I interviewed about a week after you).

II here today! I scheduled it for 12/16. There are dates open in the beginning of December but none in November.

I was complete in like July. I sent updates so I think that helped. Jersey resident!

Oh, interesting! That does help, thank you! 🙂

does anyone know if the class is actually filling up now? was thinking maybe the delayed amcas processing times pushed everything back. it's rather frustrating as a re-app to not have heard back at all from my top choice, especially with sending updates and keeping in touch with Dean Heinrich.

I can verify that I am an anomaly. You should not expect to hear back in <3 weeks as I did -- 4-6 weeks is totally standard. I work at New Jersey Medical School as a research associate under one of the faculty members. He apparently wrote me what was described by my interviewer as "the best recommendation I have ever read" -- so much so that it was the first thing he mentioned when I sat down for my interview. You can never underestimate having a faculty member behind you.

That said I also destroyed the MCAT and did the standard premed stuff -- I can assure you this is not a Dean Krone / UF / Ben Mendelsohn situation.

I have heard that the class fills up pretty early at NJMS. I do not know if it is totally full by Thanksgiving, but upon my acceptance I was invited to the Accepted Students Breakfast the week of Thanksgiving, which is where Dean Heinrich told me I could meet my "future classmates".

Also, how soon you hear back depends on how quickly your interviewer writes up his/her feedback.

Also also also, NJMS admits most of the students they interview (>60%) -- so your chances are good, especially if you are in-state.

How bad will that 7 hurt me?

Good chance here?

You should make a what are my chances thread instead of posting the same thing in different school specific threads 8 times.

I did, I wanted to get a little more specific regarding different schools, thanks though.

You can always ask in your WAMC post for SDNers (some of the people who look at the WAMC are adcom members at med schools) to comment on your app for specific schools. Since we're applicants also, we can't really give you any feedback on your app on these school specific threads because we don't sit on the adcom.

NJMS uses the MCAT score quite heavily in its admissions decisions, I have been told (not by anyone on the committee though). I have also heard they like an 8+ in each section. But who knows??? This is the sort of thing that Dean Heinrich could easily have told you as soon as you got your MCAT score back. He is extremely honest and direct in his advice, and is very open about their process (within reason). If you had sent him a message post-MCAT saying "Here is my total score, but I have a 7 in VR. Should I retake to be competitive?" that probably would have been the best way to get your answer from an official source.

Thanks for the clarification, wiloghby! That's very helpful.

Accepted! Interviewed 10/14. Love NJMS and am looking forward to the second look!

Congratulations!! That's so exciting! 🙂 Did you get the call today?

Thanks!

Yes, I did. Heinrich is an incredibly nice man who was lovely to finally speak to.

Yep, he really is. I like that he asks you about stuff from your app and how things are going.

Recently got an email that my application was put on post-interview hold (interviewed 10/23) but not sure what went wrong. 3.7 GPA, 34 MCAT (11, 12, 11), research in Immunology with completed thesis, 20 hours shadowing, intercollegiate athletics, community service with kids with autism for 3 years, and multiple leadership positions in different organizations at Rutgers New Brunswick. I am currently working as a scribe and playing semi-professional soccer during my year off. I'm basically taking the "hold" status as a delayed rejection but I'm not sure if that is the case. Anyone have any input on this?

Also, is there anything I can do to push the envelope a little bit in my favor? (i.e. call/email admissions office or dean)

I thought I had a good shot at getting in here so I'm pretty disappointed. Just want to do anything I can to help myself at this point. Thanks in advance!

Interesting... How did your interview go? And did they request a second interview with you? It might be that they've pretty much filled the class. I heard that in previous years, the class is pretty much filled by Thanksgiving.

I thought the interview went pretty well. The professor I was with seemed engaged and interested in my application so I definitely did not get a bad vibe from it. And no second interview invite.

Does that mean they've accepted enough students to fill a class though, or that they're nearly done giving out acceptances? I'd imagine it's closer to the former .. Though there is an accepted students event next week, which struck me as really early.

for those of you who received a second interview invitation and attended, who was ur second interviewer? Was he/she an interviewer at the school or was it dr. heinrich or ms rivero personally?

Mine was someone from the admissions committee.

How was it? Do u mind me asking what they asked you about? and also did you have to schedule the second interview or did they just give you a time to tell you to go in?

I had to schedule it from a list of dates they sent me. I remember a lot of questions and follow-up questions about the work I've done with underserved people. There were some questions about my family and what kind of medical conditions they had. I also remember getting asked where else I interviewed and how it went. There was probably more but I can't remember. My interviewer was puzzled as to why I was called back for a second interview since my first interviewer had been very thorough. Overall, there were a few tricky questions, some of which I was able to answer and some of which I wasn't. At the end, my interviewer told me that I did well in this interview. I ended up being accepted.

thanks for sharing! I just got a second interview but wasn't given choices for the times, Ms. Rivero just asked me if I could go in at a certain time to meet with her and Dr. Heinrich together. So nervous never heard of something like this...

Meeting with Dr. Heinrich and Mr. Rivero? Hmmmm, sounds kind of fishy.
I'm gonna make a bold prediction: you are going to be accepted in person when you go there.

i just hope its not face-to-face rejection. group rejection from both admissions dean -_-

Does anyone know if NJMS uses shelf exams during Years 1 and 2 to help students prep for Step 1?

If I remember correctly, during my tour when I had my interview, the guide told us that they do use shelf exams and often these are sort of like the finals for the classes. But this is a bit of a foggy memory so don't take my word for it.

They do. I asked on my tour also and the girl said they use shelf exams as their finals for their classes.

Any MD/PhD applicants in here? Any news yet? I submitted that online form on 10/16 and emailed my MD/PhD application in and haven't heard anything. No emails or etc.

Is there any sort of confirmation or acknowledgment from NJMS when our acceptance and deposit have been received?

About how long did it take for you to get the email? I mailed my response packet 9 days ago...

It took probably about 2-3 weeks from when I sent it in. You should be fine. They probably have some intercampus mail sorting system that takes a very long for them to go through before your letter finally arrives at the admissions office.

Got accepted here today. Pretty excited, especially because its my first acceptance so far. Interviewed 10/23.

Congrats! In still sitting impatiently awaiting some news. Interviewed 10/31 so hoping to get a call soon. Hope to see you there next year!

does njms still have a high priority waitlist? or do they only have regular waitlist now?

Hey! Got accepted 11/11, interviewed 10/9, app submit on 8/20. If any already accepted girls are looking for off campus housing, let me know! (I've got 3 available rooms to sublet)! 🙂

Btw congrats to everyone accepted or interviewed!

Just got put on the alternate list. Is that the same as a waitlist? Does anyone know if they still do a priority alternate list?

really? how could they be full already.. the interview season goes until March-April

Well that's what happened in previous years (with the class being full by Thanksgiving), and I would think it's the same this year. Supposedly, in previous years, some interviewees were told on interview day that they would be interviewing for a waitlist spot in the later months...

No clue. You could check last year's thread for that info. I think I'll be dropping my spot once I hear back about financial aid, so it'll open up a spot for one of you guys!
