Hey everyone!

I'm a med student at Stanford graduating this year. As my last year winds down and my free time increases for a bit, I just wanted to make myself available to answer any questions any of you might have.

I know that I definitely appreciated being able to talk to graduating med students way back when I was making my choice of med schools, so I just figured I'd pay it forward. 🙂

Accepted to Stanford and leaning towards matriculating.

I had a question. I feel like I've heard through the pre-med grapevine that Stanford doesn't emphasize its clinical training. Obviously Stanford is a research powerhouse and an absolute dream school, but did you ever feel like the clinical training is lacking in any ways? I have also heard that Stanford doesn't really teach to step 1 very well and that their med students do well because they're the types of students that would do well no matter what, thoughts?

Also what's been your thoughts regarding finances? Do you actually have time to TA?

Also does anyone do fourth year rotations abroad? Like going to Uganda and working in a Ob/Gyn clinic for a rotation. Is that available/something that students do?

Thanks for answering any of these! Stanford seems perfect in so many ways, I'm just trying to pry 🙂

With every passing day, I get less and less interested in Stanford. I interviewed in October and have not heard anything back.

Worst admissions office in the country.

Same here. Considering how great of a medical school they are, it's crazy how little regard their admissions office has shown toward some of their early applicants. They told us we'd hear by mid-December - over FOUR MONTHS later, and still no news.

I think we have all come to learn that Stanford Admissions is somewhat of an enigma. They seem to have thrown all rules and common practice out of the window lol. I hope that means there is some solid wait list movement this year.

I suspect that they might be waiting to interview and review everyone post-interview before making a final decision on you guys. It's probably one of those things where no news is good news for the most part.

If there are April interviews then essentially people would be interviewing for waitlist positions since schools are required to have extended an equal number of acceptance offers as available seats for that year by end of March...

Isn't the rule that schools have to extend acceptances equal to its class size, not the total number of acceptances they're giving out? So there still would be hope!

If someone finds it, can you post a link to this rule? I've never heard of this. I know that schools can see where all you hold acceptances beginning in April. OHSU for example, puts about 90% of their interviewed applicants in a hold position until May 15th when they then fill their class.

True! I think I just feel very, very pessimistic about Stanford extending to April interviews.

"4. By March 30 of the matriculation year, March 15 for M.D.-Ph.D. programs, each school or program have issued a number of offers of acceptance at least equal to the expected number of students in its first-year entering class and have reported those acceptance actions to the AAMC Section for Medical School Application Services."

Interesting, thanks!

So...does this mean that if we haven't heard back from them with good news by this Sunday, March 30, it's safe to assume that we're either waitlisted or rejected and the notification will probably come by snail mail in April? Since second look is in ~2 weeks, we should have heard by now if we got in to give us time to make travel arrangements. Otherwise that's just mean...

I talked with my friend who was at Stanford's interview day yesterday and he says that the committee meeting for this interview group will be in 10 days and everyone waiting (including everyone from previous interviews who haven't heard anything) should hear back within 2 weeks. My friend also told me that they're thinking of adding another interview day in April, which is why some pre-interview rejections haven't come out yet.

Please don't get my hopes up about my lack of a rejection letter yet and what that means. =]

I was wondering about this too....

Anyone know how Stanford's wait list works? Are we ranked? Wait lists in general are somewhat confusing to me.

Thanks for any info!

1. Stanford might not be famous for her clinical medicine, but her training opportunities are still first-class based on what I know of. I have talked to several doctors at Stanford. They are not only excellent clinicians, but also passionate with teaching. For your second point, I feel it's true for most of top ranking schools. Haven't taken step 1, can't answer this question to be honest.

2. My friends TA. Even MD/PhD students TA.

3. I have a friend whodid clinical work in Korea after first year, so you know 😉

Rejected. Finally got the letter today.

San Francisco, March 31st.
Hey Tijou,

Sorry about this news (though not too sorry since, looking at your MDapps, you have some great alternatives lined up). Question: did you interview at Stanford this cycle?

Nope I did not. It was pre-interview.

So they aren't holding another interview date in April?

Can anyone confirm that? It may just be that they're selecting from the pool from the last few candidates on that date; I still haven't gotten anything 🙁

Just a small update for those still waiting pre-interview - I emailed the admissions office regarding my status and received the typical "still under review" response. I am tempted to think that they are still interviewing applicants, or otherwise they would just reject everyone that was left (including me). Here's to the longshot...

Thank you for sharing!

The hammer fell today in the mail - received the rejection letter.

How long did it take for them to update you with your status after sending them the email? Just wondering because they haven't replied me and it's been a long while...

It took about a week to get back to me. That was actually the second email I sent (the first was a month before to no avail).

I emailed them on Mar 24 asking about my application (complete early October, silence since) and got the generic "still under review" reply on March 26.
