2013-2014 Texas A&M Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received an Interview Invite yesterday, and I was thrilled. Frankly, my response was more of an open-mouthed, blinking stare at the screen, thinking: "Really? A school the caliber of A&M wants to talk to me? Seriously?" I couldn't click the "RSVP - Accept" link fast enough. Yes I have put a ton of work into my preparation, application and credentials, but so have a ton of other incredibly bright and talented people. My GPA may be this, and my MCAT may be that, but I have read this long enough to know there are a lot of people with numbers well north of mine, in both departments.

I'm just thankful I received the email I have been hoping to see, and plotting my route to Temple. If you would like to talk to me about being a student at TXAMHSC, I'll be there whenever you want me to be there. You can keep me there as long as you like. If you want to knock on my hotel room door at 3:00 a.m. and interview me then, I'm good with that too. If this school wants to talk to me... If the students who have successfully navigated themselves into a school like A&M, who are successfully filling the seat that I am hoping to have the honor of sitting in this time next year, are willing to share their wisdom and experience with me, I will just thank them for graciously sharing their time for my benefit, and LISTEN!

+1 dude. When do you interview?

Dude you just made my night/week!

Thank-you.

Ps.. That's exactly how I felt when I interviewed here lol

I had to call the front office and they ended up downloading my files on their end with me on the phone. Never hurts to call 🙂

Hey, just wanted to throw in some factoids that may help people out. I interviewed at Temple about 1 month ago. (1) ~20 people will be there (2) the process is very relaxing and the faculty is more inclined to sell you the school than hear about why you are "worthy" of a spot. (3) Just relax, smile, and be honest, and you'll do great 😉

Just thought I'd mention this: I called up the school last week to ask if there was any way I might be able to interview in Temple instead of BCS - I explained that I went to school at A&M, and while I'd love to see the HSC there, and of course I'm thrilled to be interviewing at all, I just thought it might be nice to see Temple as I've never been there and am interested in one of the Temple tracks. I was told that you aren't permitted to switch interview sites, but there is a "second look" day when you can come up to the site you didn't interview at to learn more about it.

If accepted, when does the campus preference rank take place? For example, do you find out which campus(es) is being offered to you before match day? What if you choose A&M only if you want all four years in CS or Temple? But you match and then don't get that choice? I understand there is a waiting list. Of course, if before match then moot. Thanks.

Clearly you did find it aggravating, but maybe it gave you a little perspective. Yes, I would consider a forum where people think twice before posting self-serving threads a better place.

You're welcome to the last word, if you want it.

Cool story.

Cool story.

Not sure if trolling or you don't actually understand, but that post was meant to be helpful in the off chance that anyone else was interested in interviewing at a different location. Seem reasonable?

Relax, take a deep breath, move on. You'll be fine.

What would be the most economical way to go from Houston to Bryan? Is there public transportation? If not, how much would a cab cost?

It's over 100 miles from Houston to Bryan. I'm not sure if you could take a Greyhound, but a cab would cost you an arm and a leg. Look to see if there's a Greyhound route, otherwise you'll be better off renting a car and paying the fee if you're under 25. You can get cheap rental cars through priceline or other travel sites, especially if you're flying in and picking up/dropping off the car at the airport.

I planned to fly into CLL but the flight out of CLL has 7 hour layover in Houston and I am worried about driving around Houston area for the first time. Any other ideas to go from Houston to Bryan if I don't want to rent a car?

As a student of the undergrad institution I seem to remember hearing about some kind of express shuttles between campus and major Texas cities. Can't pull anything up about that right now, but I did find this website which could be helpful.

http://www.stat.tamu.edu/~suhasini/transport.html

I'm just driving up there - depending on what part of Houston you're traveling from, and what time you leave (as this affects traffic) you can make it there pretty quickly by car if you do decide to rent.

Thank you , annawmc and Blue Label. This really helps.

A couple of weeks after match everyone writes an essay/paragraph talking about why you'd prefer one location to another..they consider all factors including family/social support, economics/expenses as well as career advancement (like you think this has a program you're interested in and think it'll be beneficial to your career..etc). It's only if you're accepted off the waitlist that there's not much choice.... In saying that, at the end of 2nd year you can opt to do the same thing again and anyone else thats changed their minds will do it too..so it depends on who chooses to change that it may be possible for you to get the one you'd prefer.

I don't know if it's as much of a deal breaker as you think..I don't know anyone thats upset or terribly opposed to their designation but I know some that have changed their minds once they started tho so

Also, because there are so many campuses you can choose to do rotations at other campuses i.e.. you're scheduled to stay in C/S all 4 years but you want to do peds in Corpus or just want to see how the resident system works in Temple, you can and it's not classed as an "away" rotation (you can save those for your out of state ones).. so there's flexibility there too.

Hope that helps!

If your flying to Bush International its actually not a bad drive.. you're at the north of Houston and you can jump right on 45.. Hobby yeah that's a giant pain if you've never driven in Houston before.

Maybe try seeing about inter airport transport to Bush from Hobby? There's bound to be something like that and then hire a car... just a thought 🙂

Good luck!

There is a shuttle from IAH airport to College Station. Check with one of the travel agents in College Station and they can give you more information. It only costs about $25 one way.

I just received an II this morning for early December!!
Applied back in July, so I'm pretty stunned! For those of you still waiting to hear back, there is definitely reason for hope 🙂

GPA 3.7 / sGPA 3.9
MCAT 10/11/12
IS but studied at a francophone uni in QC

Interviewed in temple yesterday:

Wonderful admissions staff. Very informative presentations and they walked us to each interview. Facilities were great and Baylor, Scott and White is a great place to do clinical rotations. The students seemed happy with their choice here and everyone I met insisted that there's plenty of research for anyone who wants it and the attendings are enthusiastic about having students around. A&M has a ton of affliated hospitals so you can do rotations during 4th year without having to use your away rotations. Overall it was a fantastic experienced and considering 700 students are interviewed and 500 are given offers if you get an interview there's a reason to be excited!

This is very encouraging. Was this mentioned during the interview day?

Yes it was mentioned by admissions (without #'s but merely a mention of they accept a bunch of intervieews) but was also on the statistics page for the previous matriculated class. I have the page in front of me now and it has a TON of info; it's one page front and back.

2013 Entering class: 2694 applied. 714 total interviewed. 516 acceptances offered. GPA/ MCAT of applicants: 3.56/28. GPA/MCAT Matriculated: 3.68/29. 11 non-residents matriculated (class size of 200). Then it goes on to list the majors, schools, hometowns and counties of those matriculated.

I'm looking at my handout and I counted something close to 30 hospitals that A&M is affiliated with in Houston, Austin, Round Rock, Temple, College Station, DFW. This means if you want to do peds at Cook Childrens in Fort Worth or Dell Childrens in Austin/Round Rock you can do your rotation there. It also means that you can do rotations 4th year at any of these places that have residency programs without actually using any of your away rotations since they are affiliated with A&M.

I'd be happy to answer any other questions concerning interview day if anyone has them. I really loved it here!

Wow. Didn't see that coming! What you say about the number of affiliated hospitals is also interesting. In my mind, this diversity makes the school stand out.

I am wondering:

What kind of questions did the interviewers ask you?

The first interviewer was a student and although he had questions in mind it was more conversational in style. So "tell me a little bit about why medicine" "well blah blah my family" "tell me how your family sees this choice" "well...and they worry about health care changes" "since you mentioned health care changes tell me about...". It was pretty standard stuff.

Second interviewer was a guest MD. she was very nice but her questions were written down on a printed piece of paper and as I talked she wrote my answers down while maintaining a great poker face and then moved on to the next question. I have no idea how this went but I was confident in myself and my answers so I feel fine about it. She asked about healthcare reform (1 pro 1 con), what my tombstone should say, do I function on little sleep, if I am regimented or go with the flow, and when I answered regimented how I would handle the unknowns of medical school.

Both of them asked about healthcare (without exception I've been asked this at every school by both interviewers), what difficulties I anticipated facing in medical school (and how to handle that) and where I saw myself in 10yrs. The hardest question was naming a situation in which I worked as a group but the group had difficulty working together. I really couldn't think of any situations fitting this so it wasn't inherently difficult. Very laid back interview day it seemed like for everyone I talked to.

I might be down for a dinner or something, since there isn't a social. If a few people are interested we should. Also interviewing in BCS

Finally my application is under review!! 😀 Had it submitted early August, my TMDSAS delivered in July

Is interview season for A&M almost over? I see they are already giving out II for Dec.

Nope... still got a way to go.

Hey Yipppiekiyay! Do you happen to know the earliest date that the admissions committee sends decisions for OOS. I looked at last years thread and I did not see any decisions reported until November 15. Thanks!

I believe I heard today the first round of OOS acceptances are going out really soon... like any day now. In state won't be for a month tho..like mid Nov.

I wonder if the student body at texas A&m medical school is super Christian or if there are a lot of creationists there.
