2013-2014 Texas A&M Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those who interviewed:

1) Anyone know if there will be another batch of prematch offers by the end of this year?
2) How long did it take for you to see the school on your TMDSAS ranking page?

1) I personally didn't call the school to ask, but I believe @GandalfTheWhite did. If I remember correctly I think he was told that the vast majority of pre-matches have already been issued. Could be remembering this wrong so hopefully he'll weigh in, or you can PM him.

2) I wasn't obsessively checking TMDSAS by that point so I can't give an exact length of time, but it was definitely listed after two weeks.

Good luck to you.

This is cute... you can tag people in posts now..

but yes, the person I spoke to mentioned the majority of their prematches being offered already... so unless a lot of them decline, I doubt there will be a large surge of acceptances.

Just out of curiosity, which locations are you all preferring? I didn't pre-match here, but if I match, I'm shooting for 2B/CS - 2 Temple

Keep in mind that it seems like A&M does a lot of matching so those that didn't prematch still have lots of time.

4 temple would be ideal. I would be able to make contacts at S&W doing research my first two years and they have a residency program there I'm interested in so I'd like to get my name out there early on. Also, moving for med school, then moving for internship and possibly moving yet again for residency sounds awful so I'd prefer to stay in place for med school.

I'm also planning on doing the Temple 4 year track. Like QuantumJ said, better opportunity for connections for residency. Plus I'm a few years older than most and am over the undergrad scene. Anyone planning on attending the visit to Temple in January? It'd be nice to meet some classmates.

I'm about 80% sure I'll be at Temple second look next month.

As for track preference, I'm thinking 2 BCS, 2 Dallas or Round Rock. Haven't quite figured out where I want to do clinical years but I I'm pretty sure I want to stay in CS. Haha I am traditional and went to A&M for college so I've still got quite a few ties in the area. That said, I haven't visited Temple yet so I'm trying to keep an open mind until second look.

Just posting an update to my previous post about LOI. I emailed Whitney and she responded (very kindly) with this: "Letters of interest do not alter one’s committee score and allow a person to move up on our rank list." So I think I'm just going to let it be and focus on other things 🙂

Are there still interview dates allowing for second look in Jan?? I thought everything was done in Dec meaning I was gonna miss the second look opportunity. I'm greatly interested in viewing Temple

It's not an interview day. I believe it's January 16th, (not sure if it's only for those who pre-matched) to tour the facilities and meet classmates. They are going to have another tour of CS, as well in late January.

BlueLabel, were you wearing a yellow button-down at the luncheon? If so, I was the other guy in your group.

Someone today posted that the last interview date was 12/12 (I think). However there was a flyer at the luncheon a couple weekends ago about a second look date in January, so I'm guessing they set something up that isn't linked to an interview day.

Obviously I can't say this for sure, but since people will be accepted on match day, I'd put good money on the school setting something up after that for folks who want to see the location at which they didn't interview. I'm sure they want to give us the chance to see everything before making up our minds. If anyone else can weigh in that would be helpful.

Yeah that was me, haha how did you know? I felt so bad because I got a huge plate of food but barely touched it. It was super tasty but I way overestimated my appetite. Whoops.

I ducked out a little early because I had to make it back to the Woodlands to catch the LSU game. Definitely not worth it.

From last year's thread, it looks like some people who interviewed had status changes that went from "interviewed" to "under review" again prior to the match. Anyone know if their status changed prior to a prematch offer? Or any comments if there seems to be a pattern?

I got an II yesterday for Dec 12th! Excited!
Just wanted to say she said this is the very last interview date because I tried to reschedule for something later.
I'll be there dec. 12th too!! See ya there!

Mine never changed to "under review" after I interviewed; it said "Interviewed" until it was updated to "Accepted"

Just a wild guess. That game was rough, that's for sure.

Any news on merit scholarships? I believe some went out this time last year, even first week of December.

Just got accepted this afternoon!!!! SO EXCITED! This is also my first acceptance - and I'm quite taken aback to get a pre-match offer at this point.

Interviewed last Thursday, Dec 5. Complete back in July/Aug or something... I can hardly remember details now.

Anyway! Go Aggies!

Wow that's a quick turnaround, congratulations!

Received a scholarship yesterday, anyone else that pre-matched receive anything? Congrats to those recently accepted or recently receiving an interview.

Excellent! Congrats! A one-time amount or for each year? Super exciting. Are you definitely going to A&M or weighing it differently with scholarship now? My understanding is that the scholarship committee meets monthly with awards coming out periodically up until matriculation.

Did you receive the scholarship info via email or snail mail?

It is a four-year scholarship received via email. I'm about 99% set on A&M, preferably the Temple campus.

Congrats to everyone with acceptances so far (and welcome). For those still waiting, try to enjoy the break and not stress too much. Lots of people get in through the match and for the lucky ones (like me), even off the wait list. Feel free to message with any questions about the school, campuses, etc. Its a long, anxiety-ridden process...good preparation for first semester of M1 year (which is just wrapping up).

Have a great holiday!

Yes they told us the last interview was this past Thursday the 12th

Well thats depressing. Does anyone know who i should contact to get my file reviewed and when i should ask? Im sure i will match to a school, but i would just like to know what part of my application a&m weeded me out for. Like any red flags or anything.

Given that the interviewing season is over, I would only contact the admissions office at A&M if you intend to reapply and are interested in reapplying to A&M. If this is the case, I would wait until after the match.

I would not contact them if you are just wondering why they didn't decide to interview you and you have other options for matriculation. While they have always been helpful with reapplicants, "red flags" are really only important for reapplicants trying to strengthen an application or deciding whether to apply again.

Alright i see. So if i dont match anywhere then i will contact them.

I interviewed there last year, was waitlisted and called and set up an appointment with Mr. Maldonado (Filo) got great pointers and interviwed again this year and was accepted!
Certainly worth a call, especially if you don't live TOO far.

Anyone accepted last year with a weak or mediocre interview? Since A&M greatly stress the interview, I heard they weed out ~100+ of interviewers (in 08/09 thread), who then do not even enter the match... which makes me uneasy.

Any current or accepted students would like to comment?

Safe to assume this thread will be dead in terms of acceptance until match?

What do you mean about "then do not even enter the match"? If you're saying they aren't considered "acceptable" (meaning below the waitlist threshold) then I'd say that's probably about right, which if you think about it is pretty good for TX schools. A&M accepts around 2/3 of interviewees, a more generous proportion than most of the others which are around 50% or lower.

Also, I think it's kind of hard to estimate the quality of an interview from this side of the table - I guess if something really positive or negative happens it's more obvious, but I found the majority of my interviewers in general to be pretty pokerfaced. Maybe that's just an effect I have though... haha

I think BlueLabel kinda said it all.. from our side it's really hard to judge how we preformed.
1) We're nervous and anxious and have our rehearsed answers in our mind so if our responses aren't what we thought they would be, we think we've done badly. But honestly, they don't know your answers or how you planned on saying them and they really do take into account nerves and so in that respect.. you don't know.
2)We do the research on the school and the interview process but we don't know what each interviewer is looking for in an applicant (perhaps a good reason we get usually get 2 interviews).. You just can't anticipate this and with "poker faces" it's hard to tell how we did afterward.
3) You are you're worst critic.. we all have a high standards that we hold ourselves too (else we wouldn't be applying) and sometimes we judge ourselves to harshly...plus it's easy to compare ourselves to other applicants (esp on SDN) and feel like they're doing so much better.. remember most of it is a front and not everything is as smooth as it seems 😉

Last thought.. I interviewed with an A&M prof that grilled me a bit: he liked to play the devil's advocate and take the other side of EVERYTHING I said! It was tough, I'm not going to lie..I left and my knees were kinda shaking :hurting: But of course, I told the other applicants in the meeting room that everything went well 😎 I matched...

Yes, there won't be any more pre-matches this year.
How about folks that interviewed on 12/12? I thought they are awaiting a Pre-Match decision (by 12/31), at least thats what was told when they interviewed.

By screened/weeded out during the interview process, I mean those applicants are not ranked, and thus are not even considered for acceptance. I sure hope it will be 2/3 this year as well. I saw in some years, offers ranged from 46% to 54%
2009-2010:433 offers /762
2011-2012: 307 offers /661

which is not bad but I wonder what how many offers were prematches to begin with. But hope they will match a good amount this year.

Thanks for the reassurance. A&M has been moving up my list on my list this whole process. Here's hoping to match here!

It seems like all Texas schools are tightening the belt when it comes to interview invites and offers

Just got the email my application was released. Rejection hurts.
I will be expecting that email soon!
It actually doesnt mean you are hopeless bc i read (if i recall correctly) on a previous thread that applications were released and applicants were rejected, but then one of those applicants got an ii. But they interviewed into january that year.

Does anyone know how to accept a pre match offer on TMDSAS?
