Still waiting on a decision from October 14th ... anyone else
10/18 here. I think we got passed over for these acceptances, they mentioned sending out a large batch in late Dec/early Jan before ordering the waitlist. So there's still plenty of hope!

OOS applicant, received an II on 11/19 for 01/08 and just booked the flight and hotel! (interestingly enough, I received the "application complete" notice exactly 28 minutes AFTER the invite email)
Quick questions for any OOS applicants/ OOS students: How has the transition been from a southern state (i.e., FL)? Is/was the OOS tuition a major factor in your decision?

It's cold plain and simple lol. In fact now after a couple of months of the cold weather when I go back to Florida I laugh at my family and friends for breaking out the coats at 60 degrees 😆. Jokes aside though the transition isn't that bad. As long as you buy the right clothing and learn how to layer appropriately you will get used to it and be fine. The crisp air is actually a welcome change from the suffocating humidity of Florida and the south (not to mention my hair is loving it). Seasons, of which we have none in Florida, are new and enjoyable (fall is pretty, the winter is neat with the cold and snow...feels like the holidays 🙂). You spend plenty of time indoors (UIHC, MERF, Beisner are all connected by the second floor walkways) anyway so don't let weather be a huge determiner for you. I have plenty of classmates from warmer places like California and they are all doing just fine.

As far as OOS COA, don't let that deter you either. Iowa is in a very good position in terms of financial aid (only MD program in a state that emphasizes education). Wait for packages to be disclosed from the schools you are considering before you make any hasty decisions.

So its safe to say they're doing their reviews on Tuesdays this year?

OOS applicant. Just received my II this morning for 1/15 and booked a hotel and rental car. As a native of Southern California, this will be an interesting transition. I did not think about driving in Iowa weather. How are driving conditions in January?

I didn't submit my secondary until late Sept (3.1 o/s GPA, 34 MCAT, +MS degree and a lot of research/ec's) so I guess there is still hope!

Oh yeah, I should've totally looked at the driving conditions for my interview, I really really really hope it doesn't snow cause I have no idea how to put chains on a car or anything like that. Super excited about my interview here next week.

No offense, but the chains comment had me laughin. You'll be fine.

Just drive slow. The good thing about a city that knows how to deal with snow is that the cleanup is likely fairly quick and quality.

The cities you worry about are the ones that get maybe a snowstorm a year where they scramble around and people drive like chickens with their heads cut off.

I'll echo the sentiments of the posters above. The city does a very good job at keeping the roads clear so you shouldn't have any problems. You don't need any chains it special tires lol. Just drive carefully and you will be fine. 👍

Died laughing! It's always fun to see how the Midwest is perceived by people from other regions. 👍

Hey guys -

I interviewed in November, but lost my sheet with the names of the admission staff that spoke to us as the large group.

Could anyone help me out with the names of the woman that spoke with us first (and in her office at the end), and the blonde women who gave the info about the application process/timeline?

Thanks a bunch!

lol, I obviously have had zero experience with the midwest. Glad that the whole driving thing is something I won't have to worry about 😛

II just now! I'll be in on the 15th of January.

3.9/35 OOS (but close)
complete on *cough* 12/10 *cough* (I know, it was stupid to take so long to submit the secondary)

I am super excited to get an invite to such a renowned research school so close to home.

Good luck to everyone still in the hunt. There are still a good number of dates left.

Anyone have an idea of how many accepted thus far?

IS or OOS?

Were you notified by email? What time?

Congratulations!!!!
Sorry for the delay - I thought I replied earlier. I am IS, but at the time was being considered as OOS due to a little confusion! I got an EMAIL at about 1 pm. It was a scary email! No congratulations or anything. It just said to check my secondary application because a decision had been made on my application. I sat there in terror for 15 minutes before finally opening it

Hey I found out two weeks ago that I got into Iowa. I am in state resident and definitely plan on going there next year. I was wondering if there is a thread for the incoming class of 2018 that I am missing. Thank you in advance and best of luck to those interviewing. You'll meet some cool people and it is a really fun day.

Accepted! Awesome turn around time- interviewed less than two weeks ago (first week of December)! OOS

Rejected pre-interview today. Complete in August. Good luck everyone!

Congrats!!!!!!

That's right when I interviewed too, but they told us not to expect anything until late January. Maybe they're ahead?

How did they let you know?

We were told to expect a decision at the end of January also. The admissions person did say there were different groups of people who look over different applications though and they go on their own timeline therefore decisions aren't always sent out at the same time for the same group. I received an email saying the admissions committee has made a decision on my application and to check the status online. Thats it. There is absolutely no indication you were accepted until you log in. A new tab appears labeled admission committee decision. Once you click on it a video begins to play with the dean saying "congratulations" and why the class of 2018 is so special 😉

Thanks!!

Has anyone received something in the mail from Iowa after their acceptance? I was accepted last week and I'm flying home to Iowa (from California) soon for Christmas! I'm worried I'm going to miss some important letter/action required thing that comes in the mail!

Someone earlier in the tread mentioned getting a scholarship offer in the mail a few weeks after their decision but I don't think there's anything that requires timely action. Have a great Christmas!

Hey! Then I guess I'll see you there!

First world problems, but does anyone else wish the official name of the school was 'U. Iowa Carver College of Medicine' instead of 'The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine' ?

Are IS'ers automatically granted interviews? My friend and I have nearly identical stats and she got an interview within 48 hours of submitting her secondary (even before she was complete). I've been waiting awhile now though. Fingers crossed still 🙂

Received an II just now! I was complete on 9/4 and thought I had been passed over so I'm pretty surprised.

Awesome!! It would be really sweet to get one from here. Definitely my dream school.

II via status page! Complete 10/17

Congrats!!

So I was going through Iowa's new curriculum and noticed that they have Step 1 scheduled after students finish their core clerkships. Isn't it pretty unusual for a school to have Step 1 and clerkships organized this way? I thought that it generally goes basic science --> Step 1 --> clinical rotations

Some schools are moving towards the paradigm of science --> rotations --> step 1. Off the top of my head I know Vanderbilt and Columbia do something similar.

I think Duke is like that too. I have a feeling that it may be the new born in 20 years if it works.

Congrats. Take it, then I can have either your U of M or Vandy spot. Ha ha ha.
Best wishes on making your decision. Leaning any particular way??

Thanks! Right now, Vanderbilt is the most affordable option, so it has that going for it, but I'll have to wait to see what the financial aid from each shakes out to be. Plus, there are aspects of each school that I absolutely love, so I honestly can't say I have a preference yet -- an unexpected lucky dilemma to have, I know 😛 I hope you hear some good news from them too! Do you have one you're leaning towards?

Yup, Vandy is first because it is close to rock climbing and kayaking (I have my priorities in order). U of M second, because instate and my whole family is true blue, Mayo third because it was frigging cold up there (even before this Artic Blast), and MSU is fourth, Wayne State fifth. Only MSU is a solid acceptance so far. January may be my winter of discontent. We'll see, I'm going somewhere, just don't know where yet. All will be revealed, I hope in Jan. On my way to S. America, so I'll be quiet for awhile. Cheers to all.

Received a II for Jan 29th! Anyone else interviewing that day? Any advice? thanks!

in case people in the future want to know about cancelled interviews due to cancelled flights, because i couldn't find anything from last year's thread as i panicked at the airport. i'm surprised because it seems like a pretty common situation.

they'll definitely reschedule but can't fit you in the same week. mine was scheduled for today and the next openings they had were jan 29 and 31. so don't bother curling up into fetal in some corner hoping that when you call them in the morning that they'll be able to fit you in the next few days. just go home.

To all who have received scholarship offers already, have you submitted your FAFSA yet? I thought I had heard during the interview that they weren't going to give us any financial packages/ offers until FAFSA had been complete.

I have not filled out the FAFSA yet. I believe they're sending out notifications for merit scholarships.

Wondering when they're gonna get to my interview date for post interview decisions.... :scared:
