Does anyone know why UM doesnt accept international students? It is a private college and its not supported by the state, so whats the reason?

I am just throwing a guess out there, but Miami is FULL of foreign graduates, including foreign medical graduates who cannot practice. They might not want to be inundated, lol.

Is anyone out there applying to the MD/MPH program?

I was told by a current student at UM to only apply to the MD/MPH program if you're very serious about pursuing some sort of career with public health. Their curriculum is structured very differently from the regular MD program and requires a genuine interest in the field of public health. So in other words, do not just apply because the status page presents it as an option to you or because you think that will increase your chance of acceptance.

can anyone link me to the secondary? when i received it the attachment wasn't working so i didn't get the link

Interview Invite!!! This is my top choice!! I am beyond excited I cant wait!!!
Complete 7/15

I believe almost immediately. Mine is already scheduled for the first date I chose and then they give you a link for more information.

has anyone gotten an II who was marked complete on or after August 1st? Thank you!!

What do you guys think about scheduling an interview in November? I would love to interview ASAP, but I don't see any way that I'll be able to:
A) afford a cross-country plane ticket right now or
B) take more time off from work the next couple months with my other planned interview travel.

Is asking for a November interview date from an August invite an adcom faux pas?

I have always been advised to pick the earliest interview date possible because it shows interest and then when you interview there are more open spots in the class for you. November is late. I think if this is absolutely necessary you should consider sending an email to UMiami explaining how excited you are for the II and why you are scheduling in Nov. Other SDNers feel free to comment/ correct me on this- this is just my opinion!

I've been told that very early interviews are not that good because the school only picks out those with really high numbers cause they know they will be interviewing a lot of people with mediocre numbers that fit their mission later on. Thus, early-mid interviews are the best (I.e after the first 3-4 available interview dates).

That's...scary...who told you this?

Earliest is best but some schools will be wary about accepting someone way overqualified if they don't seem interested. As long as you make your interest in the school clear, then I wouldn't worry.

what?!? who told you this?

I am scheduled for 9/20. I can't remember how many interview days were before that - can someone chime in?

Two of my friends who are current Med school students told me this as well as my pre-health advisor who wrote my committee letter. My advisor said to be "cautious" of extremely early interview dates because in his advising experience, he believes that a lot of schools will cherry pick only the high numbers during the first 3-4 of interview dates. It actually makes sense if you think about it though because the vast majority of applicants will be interviewing during the middle of a school's interview season. They have no reason to accept a lot of mediocre applicants when they know they will have tons of those later on in the cycle. It makes sense that they would cherry pick the high GPA/MCAT applicants first and then find mediocre applicants to fill their class later on.

Yeah, but that is basically how they choose applicants for interviews A they cherry pick the most competitive or the ones they are lending the greatest consideration to for early interviews. So it would seem that the cherry picking has already happened.

This is particularly concerning to me because I have a 3.3c/sGPA and a 30 MCAT. I'm 10th percentile for both at Miami, yet they invited me for an interview this early.

A school only accepts ~30-40% of those interviewed. Cherry picking for early interviews is probably mostly numbers based but cherry picking for acceptances probably has a lot to do with of they think you fit their mission.

You are in a good position though because if they gave you such an early interview already, they must like something in your app!

Again, my advisor and my friends don't have any solid proof that this is true; these are just their educated opinions about the process.

Anyone has the status "Your application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. At this time, a final decision has not been reached on your application."?

I don't think you should be worried about receiving an interview invitation. According to MSAR, Miami only interviews 4.5% of the OOS applicants. Be yourself at the interview and show your genuine interest in the school. Good luck!

You're the first I've heard with that one. When were you complete?

For those of you who are worried about interviewing "too early" you just need to relax. Miami does things a little differently than other places. Just getting an interview invite is a great sign and its an opportunity to show why you are the type of applicant they are looking for. There is nothing disadvantageous about interviewing early. At each adcom meeting they rank all the applicants who have interviewed. At the end of each meeting, the top 20 are accepted. Simple as that. They also look at more factors than gpa and mcat score. If I were in your shoes I would pick the best interview time for you and really think about why Miami would be a good fit for you.

The wording of that status is identical to my GW hold status. I'd say its a hold, but definitely not a rejection.

anyone get an II only on the status page? i didn't get an email but i happened to check

Hmmmm mine says that too now. Very interesting. Maybe they are trying to tell us something! :luck:
Same. I submitted 7/13. Any ideas if this IS a hint or not? I'm a very much on-the-border applicant.

I recently submitted this secondary and the message popped up the second I hit submit… So it must just be something they recently added?

Also, does the status change appear on the page with the green check marks?

MD and MD-MPH interview invite received yesterday 8/12 and confirmed for 9/23-24 today! Any other MD-MPH interviewees out there? 😀

Also, any suggestions on the best airport to fly into? Is traffic between West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami International pretty bad? I'll be interviewing at Miami one day and the Palm Beach regional campus the other day.
