2013-2014 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone else interviewing on 9/9-9/10 for the MD/MPH program and wanna carpool back from the regional campus to Miami right after we finish that day? (I have a flight that leaves at 5pm!) And by that I mean does someone already renting a car wanna let me pay half for that day for a ride back? :naughty:

anyone having issues submitting their secondary??

every time i press "submit", i keep getting "server error".

and their office of admissions line is busy...what is going on?

Has anyone with interviews for the MD program as well as the MD/MPH program looked into student hosts?

So early this morning I checked the status page, and it said that my app was currently being reviewed. Now I just checked again, and it says:

Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their point total from the Committee review. Applications that have been reviewed and scored by the Committee will be considered for interviews during the entire interview cycle (September - April)

Dang that was so quick! Is this good or bad? :scared:

My status has had that message for 3+ weeks. I'm assuming we are in a line based on whatever this "point" system is and they go down the line for interviews. Might be coming or might never happen. Tis a mystery.

Ok thanks. I hope it works out for us! 🙂

Yeah I've had that status for a few weeks as well. Well see what happens.

I think everyone gets this status. Maybe it means they reviewed it but did not score yet? Unleash the speculations! 😀. In all seriousness, good luck, guys. 🙂

Your Application to the UM Miller School of Medicine is complete and is currently being reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

Since late July... 😕

Say whaaaaat. I was complete about a month ago and haven't received any form of status.... Just those green checks.

Damn. I was complete 3 weeks ago and I'm still under review, idk what that means

Hmmm...well maybe u guys will get a status switch soon. This process isn't exactly logical lol. It's all a mystery to me.

quick question.... for the questions that ask to provide a chronological list, do we need to explain as well or just list???

Please someone!!!

"6. When asked for a chronologic list, please list start and stop dates along with a very brief description of the activity."

This is from their instruction sheet when you received the secondary. Goodluck!

Yes. If you install that InterVU app they tell you about, the hubspring thing, there's an email address at the bottom, after all of the hotel information. It took about 2 weeks maybe for me to get a response to my email, but my host for the miami portion is all set, and i was told who to contact to see about a post for the palm beach portion of the interviews.

I basically just listed, maybe a few words description.

Is Miami receptive to update emails/letters? If so, do they say how they want them submitted?

How significantly weaker will my application be if I am submitting my secondary two weeks later? On their website it says they prefer secondaries being returned by two weeks and I am on the very edge

I never had the "currently being reviewed status" and now I have the "has been reviewed" status...who knows what this means. I'll just keep calm and carry on 'til more IIs come.

Youknowgo, I don't think it's a big deal since you returned it in the timeframe they asked for.

What is the proper format of entering coursework on the secondary application? The instructions mention columns, but the answer space provided is a single blank. Additionally, does the course number or course name need to be mentioned? The instructions doesn't mention to do so, but it seems odd to leave it out.

my status says the same thing...I'm hoping it's a good thing seeing as it's not a flat out rejection.

I'm still quietly trying not to panic because I've never had text under my little green checkmarks, and still don't have any text over a month later. >>

It took me 17 days from receipt of secondary to my submission. Didn't seem to hurt.

I feel ya buddy.. I have concluded that we are in a special pile.. So prestigious that a status cannot be posted 🙂

Can any previous applicants or current students comment on my status? It is "..has reviewed your application and at this time we have not made a decision"

I was complete very early and my numbers are a little low but I feel that I wrote killer responses to the secondary and have very strong ECs.

II!! Complete 8/19 No email, but my status page had all the info.

Congrats!! 🙂

Sometimes I wonder why I bother manually checking for status updates since there is e-mail notification. This is why. 😛

Thanks!! Yea I used to check them like crazy then I stopped cuz I was like what's the point, if it's important I'll get an email. This caught me so off guard. Totally wasn't expecting it, but I'm so excited 🙂

Your post prompted me to check my status but unfortunately nothing changed for me. Congrats on your II though!

congrats! mind sharing your stats?

It's all in my MDApps 🙂

Oh and I meant to say- my status page said that I should have received an email, but I haven't so I figure a batch of emails will be going out on Tuesday.

Unfortunately this is the first year that they're allowing students to check their statuses online. Last year, there were no "statuses," and nobody was rejected until the end of the cycle.

My GUESS (totally a guess based on my experience with OTHER schools) is that they have reviewed your application, and at the time have not decided to interview you, but will continue to review your application and may offer you an interview at a later time.

Good luck!!

so for the first secondary question (did all the others) can i just reword my PS?

It says don't replicate your AMCAS statement, so I chose to write about a totally different clinical experience, but maybe others just reworded it and had luck.

I am still only seeing green check marks and the option to apply to the additional programs on my status page. Photo confirmation email received late July. Guess I'll just keep waiting for a status.

Just got the c/o 2017 stats from a friend...I'm guessing this is MD only

7,128 applied
3,692 evaluated for interview
443 invited for interview
150 matriculated (48 UM students)

Average GPA 3.77
Average science GPA 3.73
MCAT 32.6

Wait-listed - 234 with only 10 accepted off w/l

To add to this, for the MD/MPH, the class profile is:

Average GPA 3.57
Average science GPA 3.44
MCAT 31.0

http://admissions.med.miami.edu/md-programs/md-mph-program/class-profile

I'm surprised about the large discrepancy of stats for the incoming students in the 2 programs. I thought they would be very similar with people going into each respective program by choice, but apparently it's been like this in past years (for the 2016 entering class the average GPA/MCAT was 3.75/32.4 for MD and 3.53/30.7 for the MD/MPH). I wouldn't use this as a reason to just apply to the MD/MPH if you have borderline stats...

I wouldn't mind applying to the MD/MPH program if I knew how useful the degree would be. Every thread I've seen on the topic basically states that it's not worth it and you can do the same thing without an MPH. If anyone could shed light on the subject, I would appreciate it because I know nothing about it.

anybody go from this status? to interview invite?
