2013-2014 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So my interviewer at UM gave me his personal email card and I sent a thank you email to him the day after the interview. However UM also did provide a mailing address that we can use to contact the interviewer. Was wondering if it would be a good idea to send my interviewer a hand-written note or some chocolates or something.

I feel like giving someone a gift is a little too much???? I mean, all he did was interview you.

what exactly are they sending in the acceptance package?

just making sure…writing back to accept the offer isn't binding, right? also, can we just reply by email, or do we need to write an actual letter?

Does anyone know if they will still be sending interview invites over the next few weeks? Or not until January ? Also, how often do they meet to decide on interviews/acceptances?

Does any one of you know if UMiami has a student host program for interviewees?

Can't believe I have to wait all the way until January 22nd after I interviewed back on November 15th..

So I interviewed Dec 2nd at UM. Decision will be made for me Jan 22nd. I'm waiting on a few grades to arrive.

I was wondering when would be an appropriate time to send an LOI.

1. Wait until I get my grades and send an loi BUT before a decision is made on my application?
2. Wait until a decision is made THEN send an LOI?
3. Send an LOI now before I get my grades and then send another update when I get my grades?

Appreciate everyone's help.

If it was me, I would do option 2

Do you just send your letters to the admissions email?

Anyone sent pre-interview updates? I just finished my M.S./SMP program, and my grades in that are important to my application so I feel like it would be useful to send them.

Thanks for the input. Isn't Miami's waitlist set in stone pretty much though as in there isn't too much movement once youve been waitlisted?

+1; I vote for option 2

Thanks for the input. Same question that I asked the previous poster. Isn't Miami's waitlist set in stone?

Letter of interest or letter of intent?

If the latter, I would wait until you have been notified of acceptance/WL. If the former (interest) I would wait for your grades, then send the update.

I sent a letter of interest/update post-interview and pre-decision. I am not sure what weight it held in their decision, but I was accepted - and I like to tell myself the letter swayed their minds away from waitlist and towards acceptance.

Letter of interest. I guess I can send that once I receive my grades and if I'm still waitlisted, I can send in a letter of intent. Appreciate the input. Out of curiosity, how did you feel you did coming out of your interview at UM?

Actually, the waitlist is not set in stone. The way the dean explained it, everyone gets thrown onto a huge list and the top 20 gets accepted at each date. So even if you were not in the top 20 the first time around, if you are a stronger applicant than the new people interviewing, you can get accepted at the next date. You are reconsidered every time they meet to send out acceptances. There are 9 set dates for acceptances (one of the dates, they give out 40 acceptances instead of 20), and a "total of 200" acceptances from those dates.

However, the stats given on my interview day was as follow:
196 matriculated/337 accepted/497 interviewed

So there is a lot of movement even after the initial 200 acceptances from the 9 dates, another approx. 130 gets off the FINAL waitlist (more or less since some people withdraw their acceptance before May 15th).

So all in all, you have a pretty good chance of acceptance if you made it to the interviews! (More than 65%!!)

Hope this calms everyone's nerves. 🙂

Has anyone called to check their status after being wait-listed? What do you ask?

Just checked my status and saw that a final decision has been made. Sucks to have to wait till January 22nd when I interviewed all the way back in mid November

Just checked my status - says a final decision has been made and I should hear back within 7 days. That last part is just a standard response, right? I'm assuming no one will hear back before the January 22nd date?

Also, I'm kind of surprised. I had assumed nothing would change over the winter break - but guess the AdCom still met!

For those of you who have upcoming interviews and have tried to contact the applicant host program - have you heard back from them with an assignment? I arrive in Miami this Sunday and really need to confirm if I have a place to stay that night, but after one e-mail exchange, I haven't heard back from the contact person... :/

From the interview, I was under the impression that the first two years of the Miller curriculum was Pass/Fail. However, I recently heard from students that there are actual number rankings for everyone in the class. Can someone shed light on this and whether this creates a very competitive nature in the class?

To those who interviewed MD/MPH, when did the day end at the regional campus? The schedule online is fairly broad and I want to be sure I have time to get to the airport!

Every school has a numbered ranking...

Is there any female interviewee who would like to share a hotel room on Sunday, 1/5/14 before the interview day? I know this is on a short notice...

Where are other interviewees staying? Or do past interviewees have any suggestion on the best accommodation (by location, rate, etc.)?

Miller has a decent contract with Spring Hill Suites (Mariott) - $99/night for a King size suite, and it's only a 7 minute walk from your bed to the interview building. Phone # is 305-575-5300. They also have a free shuttle between airport and hotel, complimentary breakfast, which you should have since the breakfast at the interview is just mini-muffins, coffee, and juice.
Ah, that's nice! Thank you!

So how does this interview date selection work? Of course, I skimmed the instructions and just chose my four dates in order, but now the instruction page is unattainable and I don't know if I'm waiting for an e-mail or what?

Congratulations! 👍 Mind sharing your stats?
34/4.0/top public undergrad/research pub/500+ hours clinical experience with direct patient contact

And maybe importantly, I learned Spanish in undergrad.

When I interviewed back in September the interview at the regional campus ended around 2pm. I left early but really wish I would have stayed. I was flying out at 5pm from Miami and was afraid I would hit traffic and I had to return a rental, but I was at the terminal two hours early...

With that said leaving early obviously didnt change my decision to attend 🙂 I still felt I knew what I needed to make an informed decision.

Sadly, the rates have gone up to $165 per night... 🙁

You deserve it! Does anybody know if UMMSM is receptive to updates? I have not been extended a II yet, and I have pretty important updates to give hoping that might change their minds.

I'm in the same boat- I have submitted updates to them via their admissions e-mail address and have always gotten a response that my update has been added to my life. I would try that if I was you! Best of luck!

I take it that you will matriculate there? Congratulations!! If you don't mind me asking, did you apply for both MD and MD/MPH, and do you know if one can theoretically (emphasis on theoretically) be accepted to both programs, or is it one or the other?

You can be accepted to both. I believe you have to give up one by mid February. (I don't remember the exact date).
I initially applied MD, but decided to add MD/MPH after my interview.

Yeah sunny hit it on the head. I applied to both, but I wanted the dual program the whole time so that is the one I am choosing.

Is anyone who interviewed able to answer the question I posted above? I'll repost here:

A friend of mine submitted mid September with 34/4.0/IS/extra-curriculars etc.. and their status still hasn't changed from under review...
Anyone else in the same boat/Is this a bad sign for their app?
What is the best way for them to update their application, or find out why their application is taking so long?
Thanks for your help!

I don't know if this is reassuring or not, but I'm in the same situation as your friend.
