2013-2014 University of Texas - Houston Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
anyone know the OOS timeline? I interviewed at the UT schools during September-October and haven't heard anything back 🙁 I'm getting worried, I was hoping to go to a Texas school and I really liked UT Houston especially

I got an email with a $40K scholarship today!!!! :soexcited:

Did anyone else hear anything? I didn't think it was common to get scholarships from UT Houston.
Told you Yale man 🙂 Congrats! Still UTSW bound?

Does anybody know if they are done giving out interviews for the year?

Anyone else not gotten the mailed acceptance letter? I'm shocked that it's been nearly a month and...nada. (There is however an "offer" tab on the same website we used to confirm the interview invite).

Just heard that they are still inviting people to interviews. Keep your fingers crossed!!

Might be filled for the most part, but my interview day had a decent amount of people, so you never know. Good luck to everyone! Keep hope alive!

31, 3.85, interviewed in September...but haven't received a response yet. From what I can tell, my scores are around the average -- is anyone else in the same position? I applied very early as well, so not hearing back by now has me pretty worried. When will UT Houston begin sending rejection letters?

From my understanding uth (rough numbers) does about 10% prematch acceptance and 90% off match. I have slightly higher numbers than you but am also waiting. You'll prob hear back on match day.

Disclaimer: my numbers were from a student and I do not claim them to be 100% accurate.

Really? I didn't know that was the case... Well the numbers not necessarily being accurate is fine, but I'm guessing what you're getting at is that the majority of UT Houston acceptances are on February 3rd. I'm surprised to hear that, maybe just because I seem to have been reading so many acceptances on this thread.

Yeah but keep in mind that 1. Maybe like 10% of the applicants actually use sdn and 2. That might be the top 10% that are scoring high and 3. The ones that aren't getting accepted may just not be posting. I know for a fact that uth relies more on the match whereas utsw doesn't really use the match at all.

Haha yeah I can understand the possibly low percentage of applications actually using SDN -- I myself just signed up today. This website wasn't really on my radar until recently. Thanks for the replies, Wacks.

Is it possible for anyone else to also speak to UT Houston being more match-heavy than SW/MB/others?

The faculty member at my lunch table on interview day said that isn't true, they give just as many pre-matches as other schools. But that directly contradicts what I've heard from many UTH students and, of course, on SDN (😉)

Hi everyone, my stats are also similar to Evan's, and I am kind of confused about the match ranking system... I'm also waiting to hear back from UTH.
If we rank our top choice school as number 1, and then say we match there, we lose all the other (lower) ranked schools? What if we get our number 2 but not number 1? Is number 2 then binding and we will lose number 1 or can we go all the way to wait list period to try and get number one till the end?
To my understanding the latter is true, can someone confirm this? And additionally, will the number 2 school stress that we go there when the deposit period and commitment time comes around and we still don't really know about choice 1?
One more question for anyone applying to (because I don't know how well the Baylor thread will answer this), if we haven't gotten an interview invite from Baylor yet, and submitted quite early, it is safe to assume that a rejection is in order?
Thanks in advance!

Everything ranked below the school you match at go away for good. Everything above the school you matched at is where you're wait listed. Also for bcm idk when last interview date is but if you don't hear back before the one month mark from the last date then yes you can assume it's a "rejection" but this is all my speculation

Thank you Wacks, that is very clear and makes sense. I guess I will try to keep a few hopes up for BCM (dream school) but the odds do not seem to be in my favor unfortunately. I will try to find the last interview date listed somewhere.
If it would be possible that you do not mind sharing, how are you going about ranking the schools for match day?

Yeah bcm is an amazing school. At the end of the day know that where you get in, or even if you don't get in anywhere (which I highly doubt), it'll be for the best! I'm a firm believe in fate. As far as ranking goes I'm born and raised houston so I will rank the ones closest to home highest!

That is sound advice! Thank you.
We are in the same boat location wise, my top priority is to stay in Houston as well, God willing it will work out!

Are all they still sending out interview invites ? Or is the final day already filled?

Thanks in advance

If the last date is truly 1/10, then it is probably safe to say that they are done.

Of course I don't know that for sure, just my opinion.

My guess would be that they have filled the interview date by now. This may not be correct and even if it is, there's a possibility that as more acceptances are given out over the next week, some people planning to interview 1/10 may decline the interview and those spots would need to be filled.

I think the bottom line is, none of us here truly know for sure. Its all speculation. It's not over until it's over, but it's pretty close.

You should rank the schools in the order that you like and would be willing to attend. Don't try to play games with numbers or stats; just rank them based on your top choice and go down the list. If you match to the school that you rank #1, that's the school you'll be going to, so make sure it's the one you would be happiest attending.

A lot easier said than done 🙁 🙁
I have no idea what I value the most...location? curriculum? grading system? student body? I need to do some soul searching lol...

On the 17th they tweeted that they were still inviting for the Jan 10. slot.... so, there's that.

Thanks for the advice! You are definitely right. It's just a scary thought knowing that your ranking essentially determines where you will go! Like Miss Chevious says, it takes some soul searching to figure out where we will be happiest. Find out where you really want to be and stick to that!

Has anyone else that you guys have heard of gotten any acceptances since November 15th?

No. Most likely, they have not sent out more prematches. Only the initial batch on nov 15. Expect lots of matches.

So... the only prematches this year were Nov. 15?

That's kind of odd...

Well, I guess that's it! Lots of luck to everyone on Feb 3rd!!

To those accepted and attending this school - when is everyone submitting the application for fin aid?

Is there a benefit to that? I mean, them not doing a lot of pre-matches doesn't really help anyone...right? Just wondering.

Benefit is there are some people on here who have been accepted to bcm utsw uth and are 100% set on utsw but choose to keep all three acceptances for whatever reason. This way two spots are wasted until much later in the cycle. With more matches people that are more likely to attend will be accepted making it better for everyone overall. By the match, those with utsw and uth acceptances will lose one opening one for someone else.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks 🙂

Well... 34 days guys.

Houston was my only interview (probably my fault since I didn't apply broadly).

Anyway, I'm sweating bullets.

I've never been this stressed in my entire life.

Hey man you'll get in! I'll keep you in my prayers and you do the same!
