2014-2015 Emory University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did you guys have any new updates you gave to the school? I'm wondering what qualifies as things that are substantial enough to update them on
None for me, but it hasn't even been a month since I submitted my primary. I can see people who've had submitted manuscripts accepted for publication since then including that there.

Yea, I had one update about a manuscript getting accepted, but that was pretty much it. I think it's totally okay to leave blank if you have nothing appropriate. I'm sure it won't count against you.

Hmm how did you approach the "describe clincal experiences" question. I have about 3-4. 200 words is crazy small. This is the reason why I've kept putting off submitting this 2ndary even though I got it Friday.

when they say 6 semester hours for english, do 2 semesters of english classes count? sorry my school doesn't do semester hours/credits (one class = one credit). and along the same lines, how many classes is "18 semester hours"? and can we use classes in which we pass/failed to count? @gettheleadout

If you're at Duke, the transcript guide says that one credit unit is equivalent to four semester-hours:

Submitted today - my letters of rec have been assigned to schools and were received by AMCAS several weeks ago; any idea why Emory has them marked as "not received"?

The school has to download them from AMCAS and mark them as present in their internal system. It's the same situation with other schools; WashU has not marked my LOR's as received whereas I'm already complete at Pritzker.

For the course reqs page, is everyone putting the minimum courses to reach the required number of semester hours or all applicable courses?

How is everyone writing out their curriculum plan? I don't know how in depth they want it to be, like just classes I will be taking or incorporating all extracurriculars and stuff too?

Ok thanks! Makes a lot of sense - I'm not received at Wash U either. Thanks!

Do they want descriptions of the courses in the curriculum plan or just the course name/number?

Has anyone's letters been received by Emory yet? Mine show as received by AMCAS back in early June, but Emory says they have not received them yet. I submitted my secondary a week ago.

Same boat.

For the health related experiences question, do you think its appropriate personal experiences (eg, hospitalization of a family member, etc) or should we limit it to our shadowing/volunteering/work experiences?

My health related experiences have all been through programs where we rotate through various physicians in a bunch of different specialties (around 20). How should I address the question about my clinical experiences? I know someone said earlier in this thread that they expanded on what they learned from their experiences, but I don't know if that's possible with so many different ones.

Should i bother applying here?

OOS, cali resident, 31 MCAT, 3.7 MCAT, great research experience with multiple publications and presentations, i also am a nationally certified EMT, i started up a youth mentorship project in my community, it's really the MCAT that's holding me back. what do you guys think?

Has anyone NOT gotten Emory's secondary? My gpa isn't the best, but it's within their 10-90% range and my MCAT is at the top of their range. But still no secondary.

Do you have money to spare? The secondary fee is $120. If you have money might as well.

I really like that question actually. It's way easier for me to answer something like that than "describe a challenge you faced."
What I'm a bit troubled by is whether they want to know what are important aspects that physicians should have in their practice and out of it, or whether they want a description of the role of physicians in society ie upstanding, moral, educated, passionate, involved in helping the community in medical/non-medical aspects, etc. The question makes it sound like the latter but I don't want to come off as moralizing when I haven't even begun med school.

I'm struggling with the same issue. Also not sure if I should just go on about the ideal physician's contribution to the community, or if I should include any of my own qualities/experiences in a medical setting that might serve as examples for the role of a physician in the community.

Just realized emory requires a photo of applicant in professional attire, against a plain background.. shoot. does anyone know if we can resubmit the photo through email?

Where did you find those specifications?

"Applicants must also submit a photograph by December 1. The photo must be a recent photo of the applicant, in professional attire, against a plain background. Do not submit cropped photos, photos that include other people, or photos in a social setting. Photos may be submitted electronically with the supplemental application (recommended for quickest processing), or applicants may send in a photo by mail. "

Hmm mine meets the requirements except that it is cropped so it is mainly just a head shot. Do you think I should send them a new one?

Without actually seeing the picture, it's a little tough to advise. But, if your face/head is in the picture and you're not wearing a T-Shirt, I imagine that your picture is perfectly acceptable. Don't dwell too much on the picture, there are much more important things to worry about!

haha agreed! If they want a better view of me they can just invite me for an interview 😉

Oh... mine is a headshot, but it was done in front of a building in my university - so the background is outdoors, not a blank wall or anything...

My primary was verified on 6/10, Emory secondary was submitted on 7/1, and they didn't mark my letters "received" until this morning. They're probably just backed up. They'll get your letters soon enough
My LOR's were marked as received as of today as well, so we're complete now but I didn't get an email about it.

I think you should be fine! I just emailed them and the lady checked my photo. she said " lovely photo. you should be just fine."
LOL I guess as long as you are not wearing bra or bikini in a bar you should be just fine! 😉

I'm dumb and forgot to put my spring grades in the update box...think it is OK if I email them to admissions?
Also my letters are still not shown as received, they were uploaded to AMCAS 7/3...

It took Emory more then a week to download my letters after submission. Several other schools also haven't downloaded my letters. It's annoying but I hope it just means they are working slowly. Hope that helps!

Sorry to keep bringing this up but for those who have completed the secondary did you talk about yourself in the community essay? I.e. I think doctors need to X, I do Y which will help me with X?

I just got an email saying that my application was complete, but I think when I checked the status online it was complete shortly after I submitted.

Exactly what I was thinking. I was unpleasantly surprised to receive this email because I thought I was "complete" 1.5 weeks ago, lol.
