2014-2015 Georgetown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The post-interview checkout packet it specifically states that thank you notes should be sent to the office of admissions. I apologize if this has already been asked, but does this mean that we should be directing a thank you note to the office of admissions specifically or that we should send a thank you note to our interviewer through the admissions office? I ask because my interviewer gave me their contact info and I would rather reach out directly to them instead of through the admissions office.

Thank you!

You send the note addressed to your interviewer through the office of admissions.

Not sure if it has already been mentioned in this thread but Gtown is making some major changes to their curriculum beginning I believe in 2016. Moving to a year and a half pre-clinical curriculum which is completely pass fail. Also adding a lot of new clinical tracks such as Global Health, Clinical Research, Business Leadership and Patient Safety, and Primary Care amongst their other track programs. Additionally, they are looking to make preclinical years more individualized with the ability to study certain subjects in more depth based on future specialty choice- such as increased anatomy opportunities for people interested in surgery.

Has anyone that interviewed late november hear back yet?

Where did you find this information? And do you know what is going to happen during the other half year that is now free?

I am a current student and they sent out an email detailing the changes. During the extra 6 months you will have an opportunity to customize a schedule based on your interests. You can do research or spend more time in a certain subject areas that interest you or aligns with your future possible specialty- more in depth anatomy course for surgeons. Additionally, there is also the opportunity to begin clerkships early allowing for more opportunities to experience different specialties prior to applying for away rotations at the end of 3rd year.

Is this something that only the next incoming class would benefit from?

Accepted off the waitlist this morning! Good luck everyone!!
Congrats ! Any chance you would be willing to share how many updates/LOIs you submitted between being wait listed and being accepted ?

Of course! I only submitted the initial letter they say to send when you get put on the wait list. It was about 5 weeks or so after that I got accepted. Had i not been accepted, I probably would have sent one more here in a couple weeks

Can a current student comment on the degree to which (or percentage of) pre-clinical instruction is "small group" as opposed to lecture-based?

Hey guys I am currently on the waitlist at Georgetown and I recently got a letter of recommendation from my employer that I am working at during my gap year. I know I got an email from Georgetown saying update letters every 5-6 weeks are appropriate, but they said please no more letters of rec.

It is a pretty strong letter that I want to share with Georgetown but given their policy is it even worth it to see if they will accept it?

Thanks.

I think if they explicitly say they don't want more LORs, they don't want more LORs. If you really want to try, a phone call to ask probably wouldn't hurt, but I definitely wouldn't send it without checking first.

I sent them a letter because I forgot that in the manual they stated that they didn't accept letters after the application deadline (honestly, I haven't read through the manual since I applied months ago). Here is the response you will get if you send a letter "Thank you for your email and for expressing your continued interest in the School of Medicine. Unfortunately, the Committee on Admissions will not consider letters of recommendation received after our application deadline of December 17th, as noted in our 2015 Guide to Application at md.georgetown.edu."

TLDR: Don't send it, it makes you look like you can't follow directions.

Perfect, thank you!

Does anyone know how often they review the waitlist and how much movement is there usually?

Wait listed earlier this week. Interviewed mid November

I have no idea. I got wait listed mid December and haven't heard a thing. I'm planning on writing another letter of interest soon, it'll be 8 weeks since the last one... not much has happened since last time

WL'ed couple of weeks ago, and LOI sent immediately :/

Just wondering, I was looking at SDN posts from like several years ago and in those posts they talked about 'competitive applicant pool,' but i haven't seen that term being used in recent Georgetown threads. Just wondering if they removed this competitive applicant pool thing? But is the waiting list people still ranked in some ways?
Bah, I loved it here so hoping to get off the WL...

I'd imagine the competitive applicant pool is the same thing as the WL. Could be wrong though.

It seems that it is a matter of semantics. By sending in a LOI you have definitely kept your application active. As far as how they organize their wait list, I'm not sure if it is ranked or not. Best of luck!

right, that's what i figured.
and thank you! best of luck to you too! 🙂

Happened to stumble on by here (now in med school): I interviewed 2x at georgetown. Last cycle when I interviewed at Gtown, we still considered the CAP=competitive app pool=Wl....i remember being told my chances were great at getting in thru the CAP. Sent genuine letters of interest both years, but never got in.

Interviewed early December; still haven't heard back. :annoyed:

I interviewed in December and they told us likely mid-end feb I think

Interviewed very early Dec. Haven't heard a peep out of Georgetown (11 weeks and counting)

So I interviewed, was waitlisted, and sent in the 'I love GT' as requested. Are you guys sending in another one later? What do you say if nothing has changed?

I believe you send in a single letter of intent to be placed onto the waitlist and then you are allowed to send in update letters every 6-8 weeks.

Hey! Congrats to eveyrone accepted, immediately or off the waitlist! I was just waitlisted today (interview 12/2), and I was wondering what y'all did for the LOI response email? I know I have to email back, but how comprehensive was your response? basically the same as answering a secondary "why gtown" or less detailed than that?

I believe they are looking for a 3-5 paragraph type of response. As far as I can tell, they want to know that you are seriously considering (or 100% planning on if that's the case) Georgetown being your future medical school. I would convey that through your email as best you can. If Georgetown isn't actually in your top choices, I would pass on the LOI.

Accepted off the wait list this afternoon !!! I'm seriously freaking out

That's awesome! Big congrats! Do you mind sharing when you were put on the WL?

Trying to gauge if there is an average time between WL placement and acceptance.

Thanks ! I was wait listed Dec 9. Sent the LOI right away then sent another update almost two weeks ago. Hope that helps. Good luck!
