2014-2015 Hofstra University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wouldn't worry too much, bro. There are like barely any ppl accepted as of now. Like almost no one in the accepted student group
Thanks for the encouraging words dude. Wondering if they send out a few at a time on purpose now...this cycle's really getting to my head.

I feel you, I interviewed on the 3rd and I'm itching to hear back. I do remember them mentioning that they review applications based on which interviewers are available so they aren't necessarily going in strict order (thinking about that helps me feel wayyyy better).

I guess that helps with my sanity...

That does make sense considering they recruit interviewers from the NSLIJ system and only have adcom meetings once a month. Really hoping we all get some good news soon, though!

Did anyone stay at the Long Island Marriot? It's just a short stroll along the bike paths to get to the SOM right?

I stayed at La Quinta and they provided a free shuttle to the SOM the morning of my interview. 3 mins drive.

To those of you who interviewed but haven't heard back yet- hang in there! There are a lot of different factors (such as the schedule of adcom meetings, interviewer availability, holiday season, etc.) which may lengthen the time it takes to make a decision.

Also FWIW, a good number of people in our class (myself included) got in off the wait-list, so even if you don't get an outright acceptance after the interview, you still have a chance!

We do have lectures, typically about 6-8hrs/week in first year and 11-12 hrs/week second year. I believe that a typical weekly schedule can be found somewhere on the website (but I have no idea where it would be... but you're welcome to search for it!) In total, we're required to be at school for about 20 hours a week, then you spend 4-5 at ICE, and you're expected to spend at least another 20ish on pre-readings, PEARLS preparation, etc, although this self-directed learning time is person-dependent [some people spend 6-7 hours/week and others spend upwards of 40... it's all about how much you know, how fast you learn, and how fast you read].

Lectures are mandatory, and youll want to go. The idea with our curriculum is that you come to every session already having learned all of the material from the pre-work. If the material is particularly impossible to learn on your own (and the faculty knows this), the session will be more informational. If the material can certainly be understood through the reading, the lecture will be more application based (case presentations, discussions about hypothetical situations leading to a final "And that's what THIS disease is! Tahdah!", etc.). Either way, the large group discussions are pretty enjoyable.

For EMT, we have to do 3 8-12 hour shifts during our first course (although they may be restructuring this course at the behest of the current MS1s) and one 8-12 hour shift during each of the other three courses in first year. There are no requirements after that; however, we are all certified EMTs in NYS and can pick up per diem shifts for the health system if we so choose. The shifts through the year are training shifts, during which you ride as a 3rd person on the ambulance rather than as one of the two core members.

Thank you so much for your response! I am glad to hear that they do have regular lectures--I wasn't able to find the typical schedule on the website and was a little concerned about it being all self-directed learning.

Interview in a week! Unfortunately, got the email that I didn't get a student host. Seems to be happening to me a lot, I feel the powers that be are taking my host waivers and turning them to dust.

II recently. Can anyone tell me what the interview day is like?

Pretty low key. You show up and have a mini orientation of sorts for an hour and get breakfast/coffee/chitchat with admissions folk. Then they start you off with your 2x30min interviews (open file). After interviews are done, they go through the rigmarole of resources, cost, student life, etc.

Are you on their waitlist? They moved me WAYYY up for interview as I was on the WL and spots opened up. They gave me a 2 week window, which is pretty good.

I know you're in CA, but maybe that would let you get bumped to a spot in december?

Just saw this. I requested to be added to the waitlist when I got the interview and then nothing happened haha. Oh well.

Ah bummer. Did they acknowledge you were placed on it? My original date was 2/9 and I moved to 11/14.

I agree with @ridethecliche, major thing is show up 30 min early or you'll feel late when you walk in. They start promptly at 8:00.

Yup!

I showed up about 10 minutes early and felt fine...30 minutes seems a bit extreme. Just remember they start promptly and be there before 8 and you'll be great.

I guess the group @gracekelly530 and I were part of was cool. We just hung out and talked. A few of us were there and the fun started when the caffeine kicked in, though I recall warning people that it would happen. I also do research in surgery right now so 8AM feels like midday when you often have to get to work by 6 30 sometimes.

There was one girl in our group that seemed a bit stuck up and didn't really interact with anyone else, but a bunch of people were pretty awesome and time went by pretty fast.

Accepted just now! So excited and honored. I interviewed on 11/14, so i'm surprised by the speedy turnaround.

Congrats! That's awesome. Did they call you?
I don't see a status change on my portal either.

To say I am nervous now is an understatement...

Out of curiosity, has anyone that interviewed been waitilisted or rejected? All the rejections look like they were pre II.

Pretty sure post interview waitlists and rejections only come out in March according to past years.

Here's to hoping we get lucky either later today or next week lol as they seem to be doing weekly acceptance this year so far.

Congrats on the acceptances, everyone! Has anyone who interviewed on 10/14 heard back yet? Pins and needles right now 🙁

Has anyone who interviewed 10/3 heard anything? At this point, with people from later interview dates hearing back, I'm feeling like those of us from earlier (aka me) are being passed over :/

Anyone staying at the Marriott tonight who wants to share a cab to campus in the morning?

Nope. The front desk told me to ask for one 15 minutes before I needed it, so I am going to aim to be downstairs at 7am to arrange a cab for 7:15. If you want to join me, you'll recognize me by my green glasses, red handbag and red roller bag.

Also, I will try to hang around near the front desk or the Christmas village display.

Ahh good thinking on asking them ahead of time. I'll see you down there at 7!

Rejected pre-interview. Was complete late in the cycle but still, first one stings 🙁

Rejected pre-interview. Applied here very late, not totally surprised.

For those of you who interviewed, how relaxed is the interview? do i need to brush up on current health topics/issues or is it more conversational?

It was really varied. It's two interviews (usually two with faculty, but might be one with a member of the faculty and one with a student). Mine were both super relaxed and conversational; other folks said they got grilled. It seems like interviewers are given full leeway to ask whatever they want. Both of my interviewers seemed to know my file backwards and forwards. I don't know if that was the case for others, though.
