2014-2015 Hofstra University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Stats or LizzyM? I'm scratching my head here, thought I'd get some love as friends said their standards weren't too high but not a peep

My stats are pretty low. MCAT > 33 but GPA < 3.5. Lots of research experience, though, and I applied MD/PhD.

Thank you so much for your response. I got a really good vibe about PEARLS when I was watching over some of the curriculum videos, for example Structure Lab seems super interesting. Anyways, outside of schooling do you have a large range of activities you can do in the area? Nightlife, extra curriculars, sports, etc?
The school is kinda awkwardly situated in Long Island. There isn't a tonne to do here, but we are 40 minutes from Manhattan. I'd say we go into the city a lot. And as you can imagine, anything you can think of doing is available in Manhattan. There are a couple of bars that we frequent in the area, but that is mostly for a chill night out. Other than nightlife, the students here are pretty outdoorsy. We'll play sports on campus, go hiking and rafting etc. I can honestly say it's never boring here. You can find something to do pretty easily.

Just got an II Woot! submitted secondary 8/17, no complete email. IS. Mine is on Dec. 3rd.

Apologies if this has been discussed already, but has anyone with an II received confirmation of a guest host? I have friends in NYC I could stay with but I'd prefer to be in LI on Thursday night so I don't have to stress about making it to the interview on time in the morning. I did specify that I was interested in having a student host, I just haven't heard anything back about it.

I also said I was interested in having a student host but haven't received a confirmation. Schools tend to be extremely late when it comes to providing student hosts (at least in my experience) so I wouldn't be too worried yet.

Current student here. They're working on setting up the arrangements for all the October interviewees that requested a student host, so you guys should get an e-mail as soon as it is arranged.

So which airport is the best to fly into for Hofstra?

JFK. Take the Airtrain from JFK to Jamaica to transfer to the LIRR train. Take the LIRR to Hempstead, and from there take a cab to the med school. You can also take a bus (it's about 30 minutes away) or wait for the Hofstra shuttle (free).
The area's not well lit (typical Long Island), so it can be sort of scary if you fly in too dark.

Yea JFK is the best option. Although if you're looking for a safer station, you can also take the LIRR to the Mineola station since the free Hofstra shuttle goes there too (and the shuttle from Hempstead station might only be during the day IIRC).

Sorry it wasn't clear - the Hofstra shuttle picks up from the Hempstead station. It doesn't have the best schedule (I forget the exact times it runs - it's on the website), and I think it comes around once an hour / half hour? Same with the buses, though there are two buses you can take there.

I'm pretty familiar with the area (lived in NYC, Long Island almost all my life), but it's confusing even for me. I think if you don't know the area well, best bet is to take the cab from Hempstead station. I doubt it'll cost more than $15.

That's the shuttle schedule, if you open up the down tab that says "Train Schedule". The rightmost columns have the times for Mineola and Hempstead station, which are both stops on the LIRR. Not the best schedule, since interview day starts at 8am and there's only one bus running before that time to Hempstead. So I guess I take back what I said earlier - you pretty much have to take the cab from Hempstead.

Thanks guys! I think I might just rent a car from JFK since I'll be getting in so late and it will probably be easier to drive. If anyone has the same interview date (Oct 3) and wants a ride from NYC let me know!

So is the bus / surrounding area sketchy?

I haven't heard any information at all about student hosting at Hofstra. Is there a separate email I should be receiving, or do I need to just email admissions and ask about it? If it matters, my interview isn't until November.

You should have had an option (check box I think) when you went to schedule the interview for if you want student hosting. If you're not sure if you checked it, I guess call admissions? So far the list hasn't been released, since they're probably really busy at the beginning of the year.

The area around Hofstra is honestly not sketchy, despite what you might hear. It's pretty standard for Long Island. Suburbish, not a lot of people around at night, not too many lights on the roads. Hence why it might be a bit sketchy.

We provide the list for student's to sign up to host one month at a time. The October list has been released, and the school has contacted those individuals who have a host. The November list has not been released to the students yet, that's why you have not heard anything.

So if I wasn't contacted, then I was not provided with a host even though I requested one for October? Just want to know so I can make definite plans.

EDIT: Nevermind I literally just got an email about student hosting 🙂

Was it the email about them working on finding hosts for everyone but that there's a shortage? I'm kind of worried I need to make alternate arrangements for my stay.

EDIT: Just got an assigned host!

Basically it said that they were trying to find hosts for all the students and I am going to receive an email shortly if they find a host for me. It seems like they sometimes have a shortage.

does Hofstra send out post-secondary rejections or are they silent on that front? I was complete early august so Im being a little impatient... 🙂

II this morning, OOS LizzyM 75+ and submitted 8/12. The only dates I saw were in late January and beyond.

II this evening!! IS LizzyM 71+, submited 08/25. As ashton said, only open dates were late January onwards. Looking forward to interviewing!

For those of you who decided to put yourselves on the wait list for an earlier interview date, does that mean you can still hold onto another interview spot or no?
Edit: Never mind, their email answered this!

Does Hofstra give complete emails? Or if my app package is complete on the portal does that mean my application is complete?

I got a complete email, but if it says your status is complete then it must be the same thing.

Also, I know they say that people who interview here later have the same chance as those interviewing earlier, but I can't help but feel nervous about interviewing so late. Do I actually have anything to be worried about?

Getting a very strong vibe that Hofstra doesn't go by secondary submission date but by MCAT scores. All my friends with high MCATs have gotten interviews, all the ppl on SDN who have gotten interviews have Lizzy Ms 71+, even those who submitted a month after me and have lower GPAs! Although my friend with a 31 (10,11,10) did get an interview. Is my 9 on verbal holding them off? (11,9,11).

No sense in stressing yourself out overthinking this stuff. It'll happen when it happens, if it does. For what it's worth, I was complete in early August with 3.7/36 and haven't heard a peep. Will let you know if I do though! :hungry:

I am starting to feel the disadvantage of applying OOS to Hofstra though.

I was complete 7/23 with a 38 MCAT and haven't heard anything from them so I doubt the mcat is the sole factor in that regard.

Literally was about to post the exact same thing. Complete 7/18ish with a 38 and haven't heard a peep.

With an MCAT of 32 I was one of the first to get an II. Your theory is just too out there to even make remote sense.

does this school interview past Feb? I only see slots in February - none before, none after.

So does everyone see an interview tab? I can see one with a 'lock' sign on it. Damn near gave me a heart attack when I logged in and there was a calendar page visible... I never received an email.

Edit: I guess so? That's bizarre.
Edit #2: Nope. Just got an interview. Looks like I beat the clock. First II!

They're booking their interviews ridiculously far out. Holy crap.
When I spoke to an adcom member over the phone, he said they have a shortage of faculty interviewers, hence the interview spots filling up rather quickly.

Does it not end in February?

Negative, there were dates in March as well.

Perhaps they should be more selective for interviews? Nah it's a new school, this is how it all starts. I'm definitely excited. Wish the school the best regardless of how things proceed for me.

Perhaps a bunch of people will drop out of interviews? No idea how that's going.

I applied oos and was complete in mid August and heard back fyi. I think you can't really figure out what they're doing so might as well wait.

on the website it says inteview invites are until march -- not sure if that means they continue to extend invites that long or if that's just the latest date. with february and march already filling up in early september, i'd imagine it's the latter.

does anyone know if they do rolling admissions? it's difficult to find on their website

I believe they do, however in their II email they do state

"*Please note that interviewing "later" in the season will not have any adverse affects on your chance of acceptance. We accept a certain amount of applicants from each admissions committee meeting from October through March. Someone who interviews in February has as much of a chance of acceptance as someone who interviews in October."

interesting, thanks. i do wonder if there's a paradoxical benefit to being interviewed later, given that some people who got an II for a late date will have been accepted elsewhere and decide to withdraw their interviews, making the pool a little less competitive
