I've been looking up a bit on Hofstra and it seems as if it's like 40 minutes round trip to get to the stimulation center…that the medical school is literally one building and you have to drive out to get to hospitals/clinics and that traffic at the turnpike where Hofstra is at is kind of brutal.

I'm not from an area NEAR as populated as New York and I don't really know about Hempstead, but I'm due to interview at Hofstra relatively soon. Could anyone comment on these issues please? I've heard a bunch of really exciting things about Hofstra, but now I'm a little bit worried that these traffic dynamics/spread out learning style might impede my medical education.

I'm not a current student but I interviewed at Hofstra recently and they did address this issue. My student hosts informed me that you can request hospitals that are closer to you to rotate at and that doesn't really become an issue until third year anyway. Everyone has a car and it didn't sound like the traffic was terrible or that the commute would be any worse than any other school. Yes, there were a few clinics in the rotations that were not ideal sites (maybe half an hour away) but honestly, that seems to be the same with the majority of medical schools. Also, there's the option to move closer to the hospitals in your 3rd year as you wouldn't need to come out to the school very often. All of my friends who are MS3s right now at schools across the country have had to rotate at at least one other site and some of them required a long trip (on public transport in some cases). I think you have to expect some of that and I doubt it would really impact your ability to learn. Granted, there are some schools that this will be less likely at so it's something to consider.
 
From what I see of the med students and residents I work with is that they're at the hospital pretty damn early. I have a feeling you're not really going to hit much rush hour traffic if you're on time!
 
Is Hofstra partial to non-trad students? It seemed so since my interview group was mostly non-trad

Thanks for the responses! I was getting the impression from some of the stuff I had read that Hofstra students might spend like 3 hours a day commuting for very simple things, but it seems like that isn't the case! thanks guys!

I got off the waitlist and am interviewing soon. The reason I wanted to interview early is because I have applied to ~25 schools. Since Hofstra ranks high on that list, I can save the time/money/hassle of interviewing at schools I am less interested in going to if I get an early acceptance.

I got a student host, but if your interview is not soon, I'd suggest just hanging tight. I was able to get one about 3 weeks before my interview. The admissions team handles this, so I don't think anyone should be giving out someone's email through SDN.
 
Does anyone know which dates Hofstra is currently scheduling interviews through? I'm thinking of resetting my interview date...

Reading comprehension. I was checking to see if it was the same email admissions uses or if its a separate one I missed!

That's really odd. I got an II after about 3 weeks (application complete early September). I'm pretty non - traditional, so perhaps there was some bias there?

Haha, I think it just stays "under review" even if they've looked at my app. I'm not a terribly competitive MD applicant, so I wouldn't be surprised if I was passed up.
 
Anyone who interviewed mid/late October have any thoughts on when the first wave of decisions will come out?

Probably not until December. I interviewed on the 3rd and we were told not to expect a decision until the end of November at the earliest.
 
Are they still sending out IIs for this school?
 
II yesterday. Complete mid sept. LizzyM mid 70s.

Really interested in what Hofstra will be like, I haven't heard too much about it yet.

Interviewed recently and sent in thank you notes to the admissions email as they suggested but haven't received a confirmation that they were received. They've been so good about responding almost immediately to all my other correspondence that I am wondering if I should be receiving a response? Anyone else have experience with thank you letters?

I didn't get a confirmation either. I'm assuming they got to our interviewers, or at least Admissions saw that we tried to be polite.. Haha

+1, interviewed very early Oct, sent out correspondences the day of and nothing. Guess it's normal!

Do not fret. No response for me either so I called after a few days and they had been forwarded.

Just got a call from the admissions office asking if I was coming to the interview friday. I wonder if people are no-showing!

Side note: Interview format. One open file and one closed file.

I got the same call, immediately after getting an email saying "Please let us know ASAP if you're not coming." See you friday!

I just found out that Hofstra will not have a student host for me, and I stupidly didn't think to make other arrangements earlier. It's super late notice, but would any of you that are staying at the Long Island Marriott on the 17th be interested in sharing your room and splitting the cost? I'm a 22 year old guy (if it matters), but I'm open to sharing with guys or girls.

Same. They took me off the waitlist for an interview spot, and then called me two days later asking if I was still going to show up. Honestly, I think it's great on their end. They can speed up the interview waitlist movement considerably by doing this.
 
Haven't heard a thing from Hofstra since I was complete in July. This is looking to me like a long wait to end in a rejection. Although my stats are sucky lol (30 MCAT, 3.5 GPA, 3.2 sGPA), I have tons of clinical and non-clinical volunteer experiences (much of it is leadership roles), and all my medical experience is from the system (Primary Care, Oncology Research, Cardiology), my two physician letter writers are currently faculty at this school (both well distinguished), I have the volunteer director from LIJ also write a letter, and am currently working at Feinstein. Any hope??

I completed my application mid-August. My stats are BCPM 3.99 undergrad and total 3.45 for undergrad. I dont have a lot of recent volunteer work and no research when I submitted the application. I have not heard anything yet either. I hope they don't do silent rejects.
 
Good luck to all who are interviewing and congratulations to all those who will be attending. I called this morning to withdraw my application. This seems like a great school; but, I will be accepting an offer at another school.
 
When is the earliest they're giving out decisions?
