2014-2015 Howard University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sounds great! Do they typically have all of their admissions committee meetings on Mondays?

No clue what the regular meeting schedule is. Sorry. I was just informed they would meet today.

How responsive are current med students about giving tours to interviewees post or pre-interview? does any body know?

Just got a II today! They're still going out!

Congrats! 👍. If you don't mind me asking could you kindly tell us the date the committee said they received your secondary as well as your stats (GPA, MCAT)?

@HaitianDrSoph I was talking more about discussing the area, places with cheaper costs of living, etc. 🙂 Howard is number one on the list of schools for me, but I would still want to know as much as possible about cost of living because it does affect my choice a little

I believe secondary was recieved the first or second week in December. stats: 3.3 GPA 27 MCAT. I filled up all 15 extra curriculars on my AMCAS app, and pretty much all my extra currics involve serving the underserved, including my research. I also sent in a interest letter in February

what dates were you able to pick? or do they choose for you?

Seems good. Thanks for that! Did they acknowledge your letter of interest?

The interview day tour is given by current students (M1 the day I interviewed). They were extremely helpful in answering questions about cost of living, housing, where they each live, whether they drove to campus or metro'ed (apparently some students lyft, uber and bike as well). I am sure some will give their contact as well.

I think Howard usually interviews until the third week of April. So there's still some time!

For those who have interviewed, hopefully people will start hearing good news soon with the April 30th deadline coming up :xf:

Did you send your update to the Howard admissions email or anyone specific ..congrats!

Does anyone know anything about PARP? And when it would potentially start?

I dont mean to scare anyone, but there's a discussion going on with other boards. "Every single medical school in the United States is REQUIRED to send out enough acceptances to fill the incoming class by March 15th. Medical schools continue interviewing because they know that not all students will accept the acceptances." The conclusion is that most if not everyone interviewing after march 15th will be put on waiting list until some accepted students start pulling out their applications.
I'm not sure about this, just wanted to share and see other peoples opinion.

This could be the case, but some schools over-accept by a lot based on previous years' trends

Hey guys! I'm a first year med student at Howard University College of Medicine. I hope every one is having success in this application year. If you guys have any questions about the process, please feel free to message me and I can answer your questions as best as possible. I do, however, have some things for you all to keep in mind:

1) be patient. I understand that patience is something that is hard to keep during such a time-consuming and arduous process. However, Ms. Walk and her team in the office of Admissions work tirelessly processing thousands of applications. This remains true even after you interview. The office may postpone the review of your application if you do not measure up to other students in your cohort, all in an effort to give you the opportunity of an acceptance.

2) keep it professional at all times. Please note that administration is very much aware of forums like this and have seen the posts that go on in this forum, as well as others. Disregarding the efforts and hard work of the admissions committee and office of admissions, as well as making snark comments about how fast they work does get back to them. Forum usernames are not as anonymous as you think so just be careful with what you say and how you say it.

3) Be careful what you read and hear. I've heard and read some crazy statistics and "facts" that have been thrown around in forums like this. Please be aware that there are people that troll these sites, put their 2 cents into an ongoing conversation with no basis for the facts that they are throwing out there. Be confident in the information that you've received FIRSThand and take all other "advice and comments" with a grain of salt.

Congratulations to those of you that have gained admissions to HUCM and have made the decision to attend. Despite the hard work that I've had to put in this year, my classmates and the HUCM family have been some of the best people I've come across and they are truly the gems in my med school experience. I welcome you into the family and hope that you're ready for a unique experience that only Howard can give you. To those of you that are still waiting, I'm praying for you and hope that you continue to pray for yourselves.

Best to you all,

P

They said they'll only approve you after they confirm your deposit with Ms. Walk
Took the liberty of visiting the Fb page just to get a feel of how the class is shaping up and saw that there were about 45 members so far other than the admins. I guess that means that's the number of people who truly plan on attending or the facebook group is still fairly new. I remember someone posted that about 40% of those offered admission would turn it down. So there's hope guys.

Well the Facebook group was just created on Friday. I don't think that only 45 people have definitely confirmed their attendance.. everyone probably hasn't joined it yet

But you should still remain hopeful. They're still interviewing

Yeah that's what I suspected too.

And I do believe ppl join FB pages, even if they have multiple acceptances...to gain info about classmates/housing etc. I know I did... I wouldn't take that "45 members" for face value at all. But, still, remain positive!

People pay multiple deposits at different schools? Because I know the Howard group only accepts people who have paid their deposit

Def! Esp if you are undecided. Besides, deposits are refundable up until the 30th of April, I believe. The deposits aren't binding, more like a safety net/seat holder.

Honestly, I would not look too deep into the FB group or the fact that HUCM has to send out acceptances equal to the class size by March 15th. This is not HUCM first time at the rodeo, they have an ~ 80% post interview acceptance rate. I read around 300 are offered an interview, 250 accepted and then around 115- 120 attend. Regardless if you interview before that cut off date or after your chances of getting in are in your favor. Just keeping putting positive energy out! 🙂

Yes. Exactly. If you've interviewed, then they already want you as a student. Just stay positive.
There are still interview dates left
